  1. Who needs a competent team anyway? Just blow it up every year and get every 1st overall pick.
  2. Personally, I think the value we had in the 2020 was probably much greater than many think. We were a miserable team that was constantly losing and that can be very bad for the psyche of players. I believe that the amount of success we had in 2020 is probably still burned into the minds of our core players and is part of what pushes them to get there again. Without Miller, we may have far less motivated players and we could end up stuck in the Buffalo problem, losing for more than a decade without any semblance of success. Others may disagree, but I think the game is very mental and even just making it in 2020 might be worth the cost of Miller alone, to spur on the rest of our team to be motivated to succeed. I think even from a business perspective, fans are starting to leave once you always build for the future and never consider any sort of push. I know in 2019 I was sick and tired of "future" and "draft picks" over and over and was relieved to see the team actually try winning. If you just rebuild forever, you'll never get anywhere. Eventually, you have to trade draft picks, even if that just means getting a taste of victory to inspire the team.
  3. Because Miller isn't worth a 25th overall pick?
  4. Good thoughts. You're correct in that my thought of older goalies was referring more to guys like Tim Thomas and even Luongo for a few years, but not as much very recently. That said, basing that data only on the last couple of years could run into sample size issues, so as you implied, it may require further research to confirm. It would be an interesting development if goaltenders are "aging" faster, so to speak. I think the biggest qualm I have with trading Demko is that he fills a massive void that we absolutely need. I don't believe we could reasonably trade Demko for forwards or defense without a strong plan for a replacement and Halak and Martin are both likely not capable NHL starters. Of course, there is a point where the return does outweigh lack of a proper starter, but that's not likely to happen given how lopsided the trade would have to be to accommodate our loss of a starter. A more likely trade scenario would be if a team was overvaluing Demko and we knew we could either trade for a different undervalued starter or sign an undervalued starter.
  5. Yeah it's all sort of a weird mix right now anyway, since we don't have any actual player rosters. They'll be more sorted out once the regular season begins.
  6. Good catch. I didn't really look closely or fact check my thoughts.
  7. I think it's plausible that a 2nd overall never gets better than Miller is right now, meaning that the added value would be the extra years of youth, with the added cost of waiting for development. Sure, you might get Victor Hedman or Barkov at #2, but you could also get Sam Reinhart or Ryan Murray. I think at the end of the day, it comes down to where teams are in their quest for the Cup. If you're looking to win now or soon, you take Miller and avoid the waiting time. If you're not close, then you trade Miller and wait for your #2 and hope he's Barkov level.
  8. Only question I would have if Gaudreau on the 3rd line. Seems like a bonafide superstar on the 1st line to me. Other than that, it looks reasonable.
  9. Pretty sure that would be a really solid team. Neat idea!
  10. I wouldn't be surprised if the greater size of KHL rinks factored into the slower game, though obviously the level of players/competition is probably the largest factor.
  11. Interesting tidbit I noticed is that he played with Oscar Fantenberg and Linden Vey this past year. Wonder if they influenced him to join Vancouver in any way.
  12. He's really forming an office just outside the dot, especially on the powerplay.
  13. Will almost certainly be this, as boring as it is.
  14. Garland is almost certainly worth a lot more as well and could get a significant return IMO. About the same age as Kuzmenko, but proven in the NHL.
  15. Have to admit, I only first heard about this guy a few days ago. Seems solid, but I'm unsure of his NHL level of play. We've seen a lot of NHL busts be stars in the SHL, but we've also seen several KHL stars succeed in the NHL. My gut feeling is that he'll be a middle six guy, good for 35-45 points, but I really don't know a whole lot about him.
  16. I think it would be unreasonable to move Demko. It's really not very common to land such a stud of a young goaltender and many netminders can remain excellent well into their 30s. Demko could even beat Luongo's longevity records if he stays a Canuck for long enough.
  17. Dreaming of being a dad some day. My best friend is a dad of two and I'm loving spending time with his kids when I go to hang out.
  18. He can show Goldobin what hard work looks like.
  19. Always liked him and thought he was finally coming into his own when he left us. Nice to see he's finally getting another chance at the NHL level. I think he can stick full time as a 4th liner.
  20. Your first two deals actually seem pretty plausible to me, but I'm not sure if the third one gets done, as I think the Coyotes wouldn't give that much up for mostly cap dumps. Nice armchair GMing though!
  21. Updated (6/16/22): Defensemen: Single Season Assists (Quinn Hughes - 60 assists) Single Season Points (Quinn Hughes - 68 points) Centres: Single Season Power Play Points (J.T. Miller - 38 points) Single Season Overtime Goals (J.T. Miller - 3 OT goals) Team: Most recent 6-goal differential (Apr 14, 2022, 7-1 vs Arizona Coyotes) Other notes: - The Canucks have not won by exactly 5 goals in almost three years, but have won by six goals four times in that span, including twice in 2022 - This is the first year since 2001-02 that no player has set a new career record for standard stats (Linden rejoined in 2002-03 to push his records and Naslund, the Sedins, Luongo, and Edler have all pushed career records since then) - Unlike last year, I counted Miller as a centre this year, since his face-offs per game went up by about 50% and he was used more as a centre this year - In setting the record for OT goals in a season by a centre, Miller has wiped Messier's name from my current record holder database - In beating Dennis Kearns' 55-assist record for a defenseman, Hughes has knocked off one of the oldest Canuck records, which Kearns set back in 1976-77. The oldest record in my database is shared by games, goals, and points by a rookie defenseman, to Dale Tallon. Hughes has the record for assists by a rookie defenseman. - With his single OT goal this past year, Boeser is one more OT goal away from tying Tony Tanti and Todd Bertuzzi for the all-time bests for a right winger (3 OT goals).
  22. Horvat has a real chance to finish as high as 10th all-time in points among Canucks as of the end of next year, as he would only need 44 more points to pass a slew of guys like Morrison, Burrows, Kesler, and Edler. He needs 84 more points to catch 9th place, which is Bertuzzi.
