  1. See my earlier post. If you can't trade a guy on the market, then he his value is lower. What I mean by BPA is most valuable player on the market. Often that's the best player, but position comes into play as well. As long as position isn't over-accounted for, it's fine.
  2. Unless JR is talkin out of his rear end, looks like Boeser is probably here to stay. Curious to see how he would make big moves in that case. Probably would involve trading existing big contracts.
  3. In that case, I would simply add a premium to the positions. When I say "BPA", I'm really meaning "MVP", as in most valuable player on the open market. I suppose BPA is a little misleading in that sense.
  4. The way I see it, it's just the principles of economics that suggest picking the BPA. If a guy has value of 150, then why not always pick him over a guy with a value of 147? Even if you need the 147 more, draft the 150, then trade him for the 147 + 3. Obviously my example is a bit simplistic, but that's the theory anyway.
  5. Based on his PK time, I would infer that he was on the 2nd PK unit for TO last year in the regular season. The same appeared to be true for the playoffs.
  6. Copp and Mikheyev both look really enticing, but are probably not cheap. Would definitely involve us trading away other contracts or letting Brock walk.
  7. He's always younger than I realize since he was a star in the league at such a young age. He finished 7th in Norris voting in 2012-13 at just 21 years of age.
  8. Older than I realized. For some reason I thought he was still like 32. His career started quite late, getting his first games in his late 20s. He led the league with a .931 save percentage in 2017-18, but only played 32 games. Another in the long list of guys who were fantastic backups, but struggled once the workload was increased to starter loads.
  9. I don't totally disagree, but I would say that they would have to be very close to consider. For instance, I would not pick a d-man rated 17 on our list over a forward rated 15. Maybe 16th vs 15th. But the reality is that rankings probably aren't that cut and dry and there may be a group of three or so guys that the scouting team and Allvin are considering at 15, and one of them might be a defenseman that ends up being available. When it's like that and they're effectively tied, it's probably fine to just pick the one that fits the need.
  10. Reminds me of the early 80s with all these Europeans we're signing. Based on his stats and age, he's probably an Abbotsford-level guy for 2023-24, but maybe if he levels up enough next year in Frolunda, he can make a push as a #7. More depth is good though.
  11. Over the years, I've become more and more convinced, that, especially in the 1st round and maybe even the 2nd, always pick the BPA. If you want to stock the cupboards with defensive prospects, pick tons in the later rounds and maybe you'll find one that can stick an NHL job. If the BPA in the 1st or 2nd round at our pick happens to be a defenseman, that's a bonus.
  12. Suppose the biggest difference is that the Sabres were better with Miller than the Canucks with McLean, at least over the entire length of their tenures. Aside from that, they were somewhat close, yes.
  13. Only goals? Always irks me when highlight reels are only goals.
  14. Not at all. He somewhat underperformed this year, but did take a big step back towards what he was in 2019-20. He's a valuable player who can play 2nd line minutes on many teams, third line minutes on deep teams.
  15. I get the feeling that Dickinson may have negative value given his contract, though maybe only slightly. I think Arizona would probably say no to that deal, but maybe I'm undervaluing full-cap Myers.
  16. I think the return might be a bit low without retention, but I do think he has value, even at full price.
  17. He would cost about $5 billion dollars, so someone will have to make room to sign hm. In all seriousness, I wouldn't be surprised if he garnered at least $9M per year on a long-term deal depending on how his next year goes. Miller is a better player than Pastrnak, but Pasta has a longer history of success. Might about equal out between the two of them.
  18. Given his age and level of play, he's likely a piece for Abbotsford. Still might be good to have more depth for the farm.
  19. Sounds like a steal, but I assume it's a bridge contract. Most bridges are steals.
  20. I did a bit of a double take there too. My gut is maybe it's a difference between more casual regular workouts and intense pre-season training. I would find it hard to believe that guys would just abandon the gym for a few months.
  21. I've personally never cared too much about the sentimental one-day contracts to retire with a team. It's a nice gesture, but it's not like they truly retired after playing for that team.
  22. If the conversation is to get into the playoffs, I think we're already in that conversation, but it's also far from a guaranteed thing. Seriously contending for the Cup is almost a non-starter at this point, though I could see our team going on a run to the 2nd or 3rd round if they got hot.
  23. Hoglander starts the season on the top line after a killer training camp.
