So in the past Ovechkin has shown clear support for Putin, a political act if ever there was one. Now, after Putin invades Ukraine Ovechkin claims "I'm not in politics. I'm an athlete." He clearly still supports Putin, and thus the invasion. What an asshat. I've lost a great deal of respect for him over this. In Soviet Russia cake has you and eats you.

Ovechkin can't win. If he says No Comment, he gets criticized because in most people's minds, silence equals consent. If he says he supports his friend, he invites death threats from any one of many hundreds of heavily armed bubbas looking to sanitize America. If he says Putin is wrong and must immediately stop this war, then his family is at risk of reprisals. The Russians have proven adept at reprisals. So he offers a quiet plea for the war to stop. What more does anyone expect?

I have to say I’m a little disappointed in the people defending Ovechkin. He’s been a vocal (and as far as we know, uncoerced) supporter of Putin for years, knowing full well he’s a dictator and thug. One who has shown zero respect for human rights, especially that of the LGBTQIA2S+ community. Thus by proxy Ovechkin doesn’t care about human rights. So what if Ovie has family in Russia (obviously I hope his family is safe, as I wish for everyone), but… Again he CHOSE to align himself with this man. Has Alexander never picked up a history book? Does he not know dictators are insane megalomaniacs who can and usually do end up turning on their own?
Don’t want to be called out for supporting a dictator? Then don’t support a dictator! It’s as simple as that. Actions have consequences. Look what’s happening to the Freedumb Convoy protestors and financial backers. Don’t try and tell me many of you don’t think they deserve the consequences of aligning themselves with a movement on the wrong side of history. I’m not saying Ovechkin should be punished for his politics, but he deserves this backlash. He brought it upon himself.
