So...this is obviously a disappointment. The decision wasn't mine, but apologies for the timing, I know it's a bit awkward with the season so close. Like many of you, this forum has been a big part of my life. I've always used it as my source for news and discussion, and I've enjoyed the many many personalities that have been through. I also didn't enjoy a few, but even those battles will be remembered fondly.

As to why? I can't tell you that - but I think there is a focus on other social media channels now, and the forum hasn't been seeing a lot of growth.

There are of course some existing alternatives, but none of them have the same long-form format as we have here.

To try to support the existing community and provide a place where everyone can continue, or simply come together, I've booted up a new forum at https://www.forumcanucks.com/ (soon to likely be https://www.canucksfanforum.com). The structure mostly follows what is here to make moving over simple and easy, but of course it is open to suggestion and change. I'll keep it going as long as possible.

Liking the similarity in structure and the colour scheme of the new forum, thanks a lot!

Are a lot of users a part of Canucks Twitter here? Maybe we can create a thread with everyones handles and follow each other?

I would say JB has had his moments - The selection of Petey caught everyone off guard (other than Canuck insiders) - we all had thought it would be Cody Glass or even Mittelstadt - QH was a no-brainer that even I would not have hesitated just with the skating alone. Jury is still out on Podkolzin but for a 10th pick, current production not great considering the way Caulfield and Matt Boldy have performed. McCann was a good selection but impatience from mgmt cost them

Juolevi -  a poor pick because for what thiey missed in Tkachuk.. JB probably picked by need rather than BPA in that draft and the injuries/character matters did not help Olli. When Virtanen was selected, I actually liked the pick - size and with speed and a local kid - but again some character matters probably hurt more than anything.

I think JTM  was a good trade but others signing have been okay to poor over the years.

Personally I liked JB as an evaluator of talent, Gillis in trade matters, Gilman in cap issues.  Think you really need to start splitting up the GM job.  Regardless, mgmt should look carefully at character in the draft process as well as stats just  to get an overall picture.

I still think Juolevi was a good pick at the time (not the best pick, but a good one if that makes sense) just his major back and knee injury really stopped him from ever being able to stick at this level now as he's never been able to fully recover. His hockey IQ and passing ability was very evident during his short tenure.

  3. Benning was doing good (not great) when he was surrounded by good people such as Gilman and Linden. I liked him and was okay with him learning and getting better throughout the years.

He brought the heat on himself by creating such a dinosaur management team with letting Gilman go and backstabbing Linden. The moves got progressively worse and worse and more and more desperate. It showed his lack of ability to be a good general manager at this level.

I doubt he ever gets in a management role again, but he's made his money and has a Stanley Cup ring to his name, so I'm sure he'll be okay.

After Sept 15th he is only owed $1,000,000 for the remainder of his contract, but will have a $6,000,000 cap hit. Basement teams will love him.

Dhaliwal confirmed on Sekeras and Price that the date for the bonus pay out is Sept 15, 2023 as agreed upon in the contract at the time of the signing. You were right!

Unfortunate that it isn't July as it delays a potential move.

Fair enough, but all we have to go on is what we have to go on.  Those 3 have looked very good and have years of AHL experience honing their skills.  We always say we need to let players develop in the AHL, especially dmen, but then when they are there for a while we say they aren't legit NHL players.  In the time they have played they have looked really good/solid and I hope that continues.

I would say Bear has shown pretty well and could be counted on for top 4 minutes as well.

    Ah missed Bear, edited!

I think that it takes the right kind of player to play with Hughes and Juulsen seems to be doing very well. I am not saying he is the next Chris Pronger, nor that he will be the long term partner, just that he has a shot. Alex Burrows was a star with the Sedins but not without them.

I don't believe I am waaaay overvalueing anything when I say that we will have a "much better nhl d".  I didn't say it made us a contender.  I think anyone watching the last 10 games or so would say that Wolanin, Juulsen, and Brisebois are solid 5-7th dmen. They have paid their dues. In the last 10 games without Hronek, OEL, Poolman, Schenn, Bear for much of it, we went 8 and 2.  We had nights where Hughes and Myers were the only dmen who started the season in the nhl.  We beat the Leafs with 4, 7-10 dmen as you call them, on HNC.

The negative "experts" on this site don't make sense to me.  I was just pointing out that I saw some meaningful improvement.  For some reason certain "fans" feel the need to bury every positive statement with their negative spin.

If you go through my post history, you'll see that I'm far from a negative "expert". Making an opinion based on a ten game sample size is also dangerous as it causes a lot of risk, especially going into a new season.

I really like all four of those players, but as an organization that has had a weak point in a certain area, the worst thing we can do at this point is wish for the best case scenario from all of them, which can land us back to the place we were early this year.

The only legit top 4 value d men that can handle 82 games on our team are Hughes and Hronek. The legit bottom pair value guys we have that can handle 82 games are Dermott, Bear, OEL and Myers (and Schenn if he signs as UFA).

I would love it if any of Burroughs, Brisebois, Juulsen and Wolanin could bring bottom pair value for a full 82 games, but at this moment, with next season being crucial to start off on the right foot, we can't rely on them to provide more than 20-40 games depending on their experience.

  7. 21 hours ago, Dixon Ward said:

From what I have seen, Brisebois, Juulsen are 5-7 NHL Defensemen. If Hughes likes Juulsen, he becomes a top 4.  Wolanin is 4-6(and could be a really good pp qb).  Add in Hronek. Move Myers after his bonus, sign Gavrikov, I like Dermott but let him walk Wolanin is cheaper and brings more to the table, get OEL the best off-season money can buy, sign Livingstone, put Poolman on LTIR, re-sign Bear, and we have a much better nhl d.  Also a healthy Demko will make them all look good.

    Hughes    Juulsen/Bear

    Gavrikov  Hronek

    OEL         Bear/Juulsen

    Wolanin   Livingstone

    Brisebois  Johansson

With all of the injuries to Dmen, this would give us really good depth and we should miss a beat if someone other than Hughes is injured.  Again, Demko will be the deciding factor as to whether they are much improved or not.  A couple of years down the road we move on from OEL and Bear and DPetey/Jurmo/Johansson/Livingstone/Kudryavtsev/+new draft picks battle it out for top 4 D with Hughes, Hronek and Gavrikov.

Sorry but that is waaaay overvaluing depth defencemen.

Burroughs, Brisebois, Wolanin, and Juulsen are all 7-10 defencemen on contenders.

Playing with Hughes doesn't make a defenceman a higher quality. Schenn was always a 6/7 defenceman playing up the lineup.

We need one more true top 4 d man to be a playoff team and two more to be a legit contender.

Referring to the bolded part in your post above, I feel your comments are a bit over the top.  Agree that Boeser has not had the production he anticipated this season and his salary cap hit is bulky at $6.65MM x 3 yrs, however he does have 46 pts in 63 games including 13 pp points.  Try these comparables:

    Boeser $6.65 x 3 yrs, 63 games, 46 pts, 13 ppp, -18

    Huberdeau $5.9MM this year, $10.5MM next 8;  70 games, 48 pts, 13 ppp, -3

    Mangiapane $5.8MM 3 yrs, 73 games,35 pts, 2 ppp, +6

    Mantha $5.7MM 3 yrs, 63 games, 27 pts, 2 ppp, -6

    Copp $5.625MM 5 yrs, 71 games, 39 pts, 4 ppp, +3

    W. Karlsson $5.9MM 5 yrs, 72 games, 47 pts, 8 ppp, +7

    R. Johansen $8MM 3 yrs, 55 games, 28 pts, 10 ppp, -13

Not convinced that you'd need to attach picks to unload these contracts.  The biggest knock against Boeser is the +/- and that has a lot to do with how the team has performed.  No player on this list plays on a team below the Canucks in standings.

I believe Boeser is tradeable on a "one-for-one" basis, be that a "live" player or a draft pick.

    Cheers.

Comparing a bad contract to other bad contracts. There's a lot of other players in that price range who are actual positive value players.

As reported by Dhaliwal and others, Boeser has value around 5 million.

Not being able to trade him while his agent had freedom to figure out a trade with any team as well speaks volumes to how tough of a contract that is to move without retention or taking back money.

Yes, I have Brisebois pencilled in as one of the 7/8 Dmen next year. He plays a steady game and doesn’t hurt us at all when he is out there. Wolanin is a UFA and will probably get a decent offer to be a starter on the 3rd pairing somewhere…

Dermott is a really good 3LD, but with his injury history, having Brisebois next in line to cover his missed games seems like a great plan to have moving forward.

OEL was replaced by AHL players and we are playing better.  Wait until we get some NHL quality Dmen in the summer.

I haven't seen the analytics on them but could Brisebois be a decent 6/7 in the NHL? Seems like a very Tanev type player (stylistically, not ability).

Wolanin seems to grown a lot as a player too and could be a decent 6/7 as well.

You guys are vastly overestimating Myers' trade value here.  There will only be a select few teams that are prepared to tank on day one: Chicago, Arizona, San Jose, and (maybe) Columbus.  Sharks and Jackets are up against the cap.   Every other struggling team (ie. Anaheim, Montreal, Philly, Vancouver!!!) will at least try to improve upon last year's performance.

As JIAHN said, we would have to wait until Sept 15 to make any type of trade.  Do you realize how late in the game that is?  We'd have to wait until preseason to even think about becoming cap compliant, and so would the team we're trying to trade with.  If Arizona wants to reach the floor, they're going to try and figure that out well before opening night.  If for some reason they play along and wait, they have plenty of other options than us, and extort us for everything we have to take on bad contracts.  We would have to fork up a prospect and/or draft pick to get rid of Myers.

In other words, Myers' contract is an anchor right now, and it will still be an anchor in September.  He has an extremely negative trade value, which means Vancouver will have to pay a hefty price just so Myers can play against them.  There is no simple way that the Canucks can get out of cap hell.  There is only the hard way - sacrificing assets.

Not saying he has a lot of trade value, the value comes in not having to retain to get rid of the cap. For example, the Voracek to Arizona trade.

Trade Myers for what?  We obviously need to either retain cap or receive cap in return.  You're also not including Tanner Pearson here.

We are already over the cap for next year.  We need to dump salary, and do it fast.

After July, likely not. Myers' cap hit actually becomes attractive to bottom teams looking to rebuild as it helps them reach the cap floor by 6 mill while only costing 1 mill.

I would be surprised if a team like Arizona isn't all over that.

  13. Two things can be true at once. This can be a good trade but also one that maybe isn't right for us.

    I'm torn.

Picks are great for us right now and this is a great draft coming up, but Hronek is also only 25 years old and already playing at a top pair level. We would hope to get a player like him with one of our picks.

This management team really has to do well on their trades and free agent signings over the next year.

We all have PTSD from the Benning era and the failure of signings and trades that kept holding us back, let's hope for better with this group.

But you are handicapping yourself for years doing that. If we were to buy him out this summer, 25/26, and 26/27 is nearly $5mil of dead cap space. That is a significant player that we can't add to our roster for those 2 years. And that's not counting the 4 years after his deal would be done that we are paying $2.1mil a year. Now that is likely not near as big of a deal, but it still hurts the team. The cup contending teams don't carry dead cap.

Yep, not saying I would do it, but there's ways around it for sure. We would just have to make sure our drafting is really good to offset any cost with an ELC.

  15. 19 minutes ago, greenbean30 said:

Yeah I really hate this idea of people wanting to buy out OEL. It literally makes no sense, we aren't competing next year and very likely the year after that so the cap space does nothing for us. But the dead cap that would extend until 2030 definitely might hurt us big time.

There is a world where buying out OEL also makes sense however.

If we load up on picks this season and sign a few college and European free agents, our cupboards a stocked well again.

The cap space from an OEL buyout and Myers trade on July 1st would open up 13 million to work with our right defence.

Our forward group is already one of the best in the league and we have a top 10 goalie. Fixing our defence makes us a legit playoff team and starts building the morale of our core EP, QH and TD.

We would have enough ELCs in the system that could off set the dead cap and with the cap rising about 10 mill during that time as well.

Not saying I would do it, but it isn't black and white. With more smart moves the next few years, this team can definitely take on an OEL buyout while building the team towards a contender.

Maybe folk might see the difference now between Benning and PA

I have to give credit to the team as a whole. Seems like our whole organization is stabilizing and every move is a big picture move.

Getting defensemen is a priority, but it is not a rush, it will happen as the pieces slowly keep falling together and our assets accumulate and we get more quality younger pieces.

We have patience to get the best trade possible, and that is something we lacked previously (among other things).
