[PGT] Vancouver Canucks at San Jose Sharks | Feb. 17, 2022

Burroughs is a gem. Not sure if his ceiling is Tanev high but him just being a solid third pairing heart and soul guy is awesome. Being a BC boy makes it even better. -

To be fair, I feel like I've seen Bo not stick up for guys more times than I have seen him do it. But that's not his fault, it's just not his game. I guess when Bo was developing, I really thought he would be the Iginla/Kesler/Brind'Amour type emotional leader and wear his heart on his sleeve. Doesn't mean he's not a good captain and not a solid second line center! -

Haha I thought that was indirectly directed at me, didn't realize there was a strip Bo of the C thing happening on CDC. My bad! -

I'm not a fan of stripping captaincy. I'd rather move the player otherwise it may create an awkward/toxic environment. -

So.. because a player wears the "C" he's incapable of criticism? Also, I never said anything about stripping Bo of his captaincy, I was complimenting Miller and how involved he is with everything emotionally. -

Seeing Motte get dumped and Miller go after the guy while Bo just stood there... I know trading Miller for a haul is probably the right thing to do but man, he's our heart and soul leader.- 371 replies

In 17 playoff games, Roussel had 2 goals, Sutter had 1 goal and Beagle had 1 goal. That's 4 goals between about a 10 million cap hit. I never said they never had any impact, but well constructed teams don't drastically over pay for intangibles. We didn't get worse after losing those players, we got worse the very next season because we were a poorly constructed team that could not afford any upgrades or to even keep players like Toffoli due to the lack of cap space. We weren't in the competing cycle while being cash strapped and not being able to weaponize cap space.
-
No, we were bad because we couldn't use that money in the top 6 and top 4. Good teams find value players in the bottom half of their line up.
-
They weren't developed internally. Also, they were overpriced bottom 6 free agent signings that did not bring the value they were paid to the ice. Roussel may be the exception pre-injury.
-
If you develop a player properly in the AHL and they become NHL ready, they'll make an impact regardless of which roster they play on. Putting players in a position to succeed once they are NHL ready is a different conversation.
-
They're developing players to reach their potential, not padding their stats by putting them with a superstar. The reason Pittsburgh was successful during the stretch without Crosby and Malkin this year was because of those players.
-
The "other" guys do not simply fall into place. The last 8 years of our organization and many other organizations around the league that struggle with depth should be an easy example of that. Pittsburgh was and is one of the best organizations at finding unknown talent and developing them into key contributors throughout the line up.
-
Did my best to create short notes on Allvin's interview with Drance today, here it is: - Very busy, mostly hotel to the rink, long hours. - Immediately after playing career got hired by Montreal as a scout. - In 2006 after the changes in Pittsburgh, began working for them. - You can't become perfect and learn everything about the game, likes to learn every day and never be satisfied, what drives him. - Likes being a detailed guy and process driven. Wants structure and process within the organization, makes decision making easier. - Talking about success in Pittsburgh and how they were able to get great production from relatively unknown players - creating a culture and environment to empower people, standards and expectations are high within the ice and higher within the hockey ops. Want to be better everyday. After you win the cup, its a relief, but immediately after it's important to figure out how to be better. Important to have a lot of quality people around with input and knowledge and work towards the same goal. - His keys to success within acquiring talent and development was the structure in place and the trust towards him in doing the job. - Abbotsford has a lot of good people in place. Wants to get the identity of the Vancouver Canucks in place, put a structure in place and get in the work to make the team successful. Ryan Johnson has done a tremendous job. Wants to help him with resources and have a plan and structure for each player. Each player has a different path to the NHL, it isn't a sprint, it's a marathon. Don't want a 50 games and done player, wants long term success in the NHL. - Needs to challenge staff with every decision because alone a GM can't base a decision on a few games based on self opinion. Every decision will be made based on the process of opinions from scouts and staff members. - Has been impressed with Jim Rutherford's open mindedness. JR really trusts and empowers staff, doesn't want people who always agree with him, neither does Allvin. - Still wants to evaluate the team more. Wants to get to know the staff and players more. - First impressions of the team - gives players credit for fighting back from a rough start. Credit to coaching staff and players for putting themselves in a position to compete for a playoff spot. - No rush to do anything. Going to use the 5 weeks to watch the team closely and get to know the players better. - Good teams need a good pipeline of players. Need internal competition. Wants to create an environment to attract College and European free agents to come to Vancouver/Abbotsford to become better and be part of a winning culture. - Will utilize the quality of the staff to hear everyone's opinion on how they see things to decide what to do moving forward. - Wants to be a good team over time, not just one season, that's what decisions will be based on. IMO, JR and PA are doing well to posture the team into a stronger trading position by not acting desperate to make moves. Will be fun to see this team progress moving forward.

[Report] Canucks hire Cammi Granato as assistant GM
MrCanuck94 replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Canucks Talk
The big difference is developing and delegating vs just using the people under you. JR focuses on developing the inexperienced with potential to reach their potential and being trustful enough to delegate and spread out responsibility. He's developed many top management level people around the league. -
Actually, I don't believe this will be an issue at all. Communication is clearly a strength of this management group as a whole and I'm sure they will have conversations with the core players they plan to keep about the direction they will go. JR has already told us they will be making moves that help us contend in two years. This team cannot stand pat for the reason I mentioned in another thread:
-
As JR said, we can't be a capped out team as well as a non playoff team. Can they be better? Sure. Is the roster quality close to cup contending quality. Not close. We need to bring in more younger assets with potential that can eventually add value for the dollar through ELC/lower $ amounts as well as finding good value for the dollar players in general through trades and free agency.
-
I wouldn't keep Boeser at 6 mill either. I'd rather get a lateral piece that is better at driving play, is an above average skater and can play a better defensive game. The only elite aspect of his game was his shot and he lost that too. It's not just the QO.

[Proposal] Boeser for Laine

Laine is also playing with Columbus' talent level. Laine is easily the more talented player. -
(Discussion) Horvat vs Miller
MrCanuck94 replied to MrCanuck94's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
Welcome to a hockey discussion board, where 99% of things discussed will never happen -
It's been reported that the only untouchables for the Canucks are Petey, Hughes and Demko. Could see many changes in the near future potentially. Buckle up, it's trader Jim szn.

MrCanuck94 replied to MrCanuck94's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
Because it's already been reported that the only untouchables the Canucks have are Petey, Hughes and Demko. Not discussing a potential situation won't magically not potentially make it happen. -
(Discussion) Horvat vs Miller
MrCanuck94 replied to MrCanuck94's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
Fair points, and the third paragraph is definitely a lot to consider. I felt Brock was the easy choice if all three were presented, hence why I asked this specifically to gauge the thought process between these two. -
(Discussion) Horvat vs Miller
MrCanuck94 replied to MrCanuck94's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
That's far from true. This team has holes to fill and finding more blue chip prospects and 1st round draft picks is impossible without giving up value. We have 3 players that can fill 2 top 6 center spots. Using one to get a top RD prospect while knocking off some salary is not an illogical method to take. 2 birds 1 stone. Wingers can easily be found in free agency as a replacement. Not saying that I want to lose either Miller or Horvat, but calling that method not logical isn't really fair. -
(Discussion) Horvat vs Miller
MrCanuck94 replied to MrCanuck94's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
It's not adding to the negativity, it's a realistic potential scenario upon us this year. Even JR has said today that we'll have to make some tough decisions and free up some cap. With Horvat and Miller due for raises soon, I wanted to see who CDC would prefer to keep if the scenario of having to give up one arose. I gave my honest analysis of each player without bias to what I would do. IMO I would choose to keep Miller unless the value coming back was drastically more. He's the better player overall. If we could keep everyone, then over course that would be awesome, but it's highly unlikely that that'll be possible.
