Pretty much all insiders and media people said he was a top 5 pick if it wasn't for the Russian factor during the draft. Elliotte Friedman even asked Benning why the 2 years in Russia didn't scare us off like the other GM's.
-
In my opinion it was multiple factors, mostly Hughes to lessen time in the defensive zone and Myers taking some of the load off of him.
-
Likely to replace Stecher's cap hit I'd assume, brings more size as well to the bottom pairing.
-
It's almost a guarantee then that Tanev stays to be part of the RHD on the PK with Myers next season unless we bring in someone through free agency. There's no way we run with Stecher on the second unit if Rafferty can't share the load. Even if he can, I doubt we take a chance on that while trying to compete.

Did Rafferty kill penalties with the Comets? I tried searching this topic but couldn't find an answer.

@The 5th Line Canada has only been implementing safety measures such as non essential closures and social distancing while quarantining high risk individuals since mid march, for 2 months. Looking at death rates and coming up with a hypothesis is the most naive approach one can take. If safety measures aren't in place, it affects multiple relationships. The death rate may be low, however, the disease increases exponentially. With the exponential increase, that death rate becomes more deadly. With more individuals becoming sick, the capacity at hospitals becomes lower, with less having access to help, the death rate increases. Along with this, other variables can be affected such as healthcare workers becoming sick which also lessens how many individuals can be helped, etc. The economy in my opinion would be worse off if shutdowns did not occur because eventually everything would be shut down and recovery would take longer from a lower point. Flattening the curve is crucial, there is no argument. Saving every single life possible is important. You cannot argue an accident or heart disease against something like this. This is a contagious disease and being selfish can harm others, not just yourself. It has preventable measures to minimize its impact and it is our duty to ensure everyones safety around us. People of all ages have died around the world because of COVID, we are blessed that we have great control in BC, but that doesn't mean we should underestimate how bad it can get.

It's like saying Reid Boucher has more upside than Tanner Pearson because he has a better wrist shot. If you don't have the whole package at a NHL level, that one asset does not matter when translating your game to the next level. I actually think Bailey can be a solid fourth line player in the NHL sooner than later.
-
Leivo probably won't have a spot on our team anymore due to our depth but Bailey does not have more upside than him. However, role wise, Bailey would be a better fit for the fourth line if injuries occur there whereas Leivo is a good filler for the middle six if injuries occur.

With no restrictions I'd say for me it's: Mogilny - Pettersson - Bure Sedin - Sedin - Linden Naslund - Gradin - Bertuzzi Burrows - Kesler - Smyl Ohlund - Hughes Lumme - Reinhart Edler - Jovo Luongo Mclean/Markstrom All lefty defence , we really need to get some top end right handed defencemen into this organization. Moved Mogilny from RW to LW just for the sake of our RW depth. I would've added Sundin and pushed Gradin to 4C since I said no restrictions but felt half a season was unfair haha! Plus that 4th line is a hell of a checking line. And yes, I feel Pettersson and Hughes are going to end up being the best players at fwd and def respectively that we've ever had.

https://thehockeynews.com/news/article/redoing-the-2019-nhl-draft-how-would-it-unfold-today I'll post it here for anyone who misses it in the Podkolzin thread. Very early for a redraft but fun to look at in these times. Podkolzin jumps a spot and Hoglander jumps to 18.

It's not fact, it's an opinion as even Ray stated himself. It is good to have his input but it is good to look at other inputs and contextual circumstances as well instead of using one POV to push an agenda.

For sure with major injuries like the ones Olli has had it takes a long time to become fully healthy again, and he's likely getting closer to 100% now. This break in play is also a blessing for the kid to get some rest. From what I've read and the few clips I've seen and what RJ has had to say, he's improved from his past season. Playing high minutes, second PP unit and first unit PK, sounds like he's progressing well and likely getting groomed for the same role in the future for the big club. Olli is 22 next season. Brisebois is 23, Rafferty is 25 and Tryamkin is 26. He is still young and has more time to grow into his ceiling whereas the others are closer to or already at what they will be. Therefore for me, Rathbone is the only defensive prospect at or ahead of Juolevi.
-
The main question with Boeser is if he can recover from his injuries and get his wrist shot back from his rookie season.
-
This. No need to lessen our right side this year since we're looking to become a playoff contender. Let Podkolzin or Virtanen push their way onto top 6 and look like they belong there before we make the trade. However, from the business side of things, if the options were trade Boeser for a top RHD and keep Toffoli versus let Toffoli go and keep Boeser, I wouldn't mind looking at it. This way we keep a top 6 RW and manage to get ourselves a top dman or prospect.

Compliance buyouts are used on players that cannot be moved due to no value and high cap hits. Myers has value. Myers will not have the compliance used on him.
-
I know we're not supposed to hand out roster spots but I really want us to give him some games at the start of next season regardless of his camp. Kid just needs a break and an opportunity for us to see where he's at as a NHL player.
-
I'm not good with analytics but from the eye test to me Myers has looked pretty good defensively this year (better than I expected him to be as well) and I remember seeing somewhere that analytics showed that he was our best RHD.
-
Tryamkin is a defensive d man and unproven on what he can be at the NHL level so far. Myers is a 2 way d man with good offensive instincts and the ability to put up 30+ points a year. Not sure if that's the same job or a risk a team looking to make the playoffs would take.
-
I understand this train of thought, but I feel we have to become less attached to our players to take the next step forward to becoming Stanley Cup contenders. With that 5 million we need a top 4 D who can provide more offence while playing well defensively (What Seabrook was to Keith) and an upgrade on Stecher with hopefully a player that brings a solid defensive game but also size and physicality for the playoffs. Perhaps these upgrades can come internally via Rafferty and Tryamkin on the right side.
-
Personally, I would like the Canucks to walk away from Fanta and rotate Olli and Jordie on the bottom pairing LHD throughout the season.
-
I think he's more of an Edler replacement. Seems like he's being groomed to take the same type of minutes that he's playing right now.
-
Compliance buyouts are used to help get rid of players that hold no or negative value, not players who have value that can be traded for other assets.
-
Just going to remind everyone of what RJ had to say about OJ not too long ago. He's not far off and he definitely has the highest ceiling of all of our d prospects. Elite hockey sense is not thrown around regularly. He just needs to stay healthy. Also, no to trading Olli, I'd say there's a higher potential reward of him just panning out.

Lol at the Myers suggestions he's played well.
