  1. They didn't even say close to the same thing. The main thing Allvin said was he'll try his best to not take a step back while building structure and cap space within the organization. The goal is to improve every year but the vision is always to create a contender. They have reiterated many times that there is work to do.
  2. I'm thoroughly impressed with the work JR has done when it comes to tournaments, development camps, renovations, practice rink, etc. They're focused on making us a world class organization again, just like we were during Gillis' era.
  3. If we can find some cheap wingers that play over their value like Florida did, we can be in a really good spot moving forward.
  4. Here's my quick summary of todays press, if I wrote anything wrong, please let me know and I will correct it. - Hasn't changed their mind on what needs to be done since earlier in the season - Team relies on goalie too much - Still have work to do, adding the right couple of players can make us a playoff team - Don't know if Martin will work out for sure, but having a league minimum backup helps with the cap a lot - Martin was solid positionally, great at tracking - Wants to build cap space while improving the team - Likes the job Boudreau has done - Structure of the team needs to improve, exits from defensive zone are one of the worst in the league - Have defensemen that are capable of playing better with better structure - Fixing the structure will make us a consistently better team - There is work to be done, they saw improvement but need to get better in all areas - Situation of adding and subtracting is more complicated here than they like, meetings here in the next week with departments to start making decisions - Management wants Bruce back, want to work with him on a few things to help make him better - Strong organizations don't worry about the term "lame duck" coaches, can bring him back for next year and figure it out from there - We have players that can get to a superstar level in the league - Petey, Hughes, Demko - Believes there is more to come from Elias - Crosby and Letang make players around them better, has those type of expectations for those superstar calibre players coming into next season - Rogers Arena is getting renovations in many areas, some in Abbotsford as well - Practice arena is getting closer to a site decision - Francesco had no issues putting money into renovations - Francesco has let the management do their job, JR speaks to Francesco about every two weeks while grabbing a bite together - Too early to say on Sutter's future - Willing to have Bruce under the contract he's on, no extension this year, not against a contract extension after next season - As good of a job Bruce has done, it wasn't a full season - Sullivan won the cup with JR in 16 and 17 and he didn't get an extension until needed - Still evaluating staff, changes might happen - Comfortable with Todd Harvey leading the amateur scouting for this upcoming draft - Will reach out to Miller and Horvat's agents to talk about extensions - Plan to have all signed and unsigned prospects at prospects camp - Challenge scouts to find players in other leagues - Young Stars tournament and prospects camp was a priority, existing organization members were all for it - 2 other teams committed to Young Start Tournament, 1 team in consideration - We have an older facility, locker room is outdated - Having up to date facilities helps in recruiting - Bruce has until June 1st to decide to come back - Very impressed with Ryan Johnson, rely a lot on RJ, big part of management staff, moving forward will figure out the best position/role for him - Abbotsford coaching staff have done a good job - Abbotsford could be the best franchise in the AHL overtime, goal is to make it better and better - Really liked Podkolzin over the last 4-5 weeks, looked like a full time NHL player, need to develop players to be able to play into May - Positive talks with Brock and his agent - Don't need to make major changes, but need to get better through trades and free agency - Hopes we can find a way to get better long term without taking a step back next season - Believes Dermott has upside, was able to get younger and shed salary - Really happy the way the front office has come together and work together - Cammi Granato keeps amateur scouting and pro scouting accountable edit: - Doesn't think Demko needs a procedure, should be ready for training camp
  5. Comparing Vegas not having 4 of their top 6 forwards, one top 4 d man, and #1 goalie for over half the season to us not having Bo and Demko for a couple weeks? C'mon lol. Like I said in other threads, I agree with some of the things you said, like keeping Miller. Reality is, this team is a few pieces away from being a true contender. As mentioned, an effective 3C, a couple of middle 6 tweeners and two top 4 right handed d men. We also need to accumulate younger players and impactful ELCs that will push us over the edge in 3-4 years time to maintain the window and keep us cost efficient. However, I'm extremally confident in our management group and wouldn't be surprised if they have a huge offseason and bring us closer to contention fast.
  6. Bo would be 3C, not Miller.
  7. Vegas was missing most of their top players for the majority of the season, they're a playoff team at health. Other than 2 superstar players carrying them, EDM never was or is a great team on paper, but they will continue to improve with their depth slowly building. LA and Anaheim are both on upward trajectories. Calgary is one of the best teams in the league right now. The Canucks have a few glaring holes, an effective 3C, a couple of middle 6 tweeners and two top 4 right handed d men. Next season is a fresh slate, we can't just use this seasons point totals to say we'll be a playoff team. We're building a team that can compete for the cup, not a team that is going to get bounced in the first round every year. Love the passion and we need that moving forward, but it's important not to be blinded ourselves from the reality of where the team actually is and where we need to get to.
  8. It all depends on when management thinks they can build a contender. If they feel the team is 3 years or more away, then yes trading players that would be leaving their prime and gaining the maximum assets back would make sense. It would make us a stronger team down the line. I personally want to keep Miller, but the argument of moving him is completely valid when looking at team cycles and maximizing assets.
  9. Building a contender vs just icing a good team is a big difference. Creating cap value is a tough process and we have a great management team in place for that now. Management may not see certain players as fits moving forward as well.
  10. He's definitely improved the defensive aspect of his game the past few years and I'd say he's average defensively now, however, if he's getting paid 6+ mill, he needs to bring a lot more offensively on a consistent basis. IMO isn't a play driver, average playmaker, below average skater and lost his elite wrist shot which impact my view on him. He has high hockey IQ though and when he's playing with confidence, he's able to read plays and get into the right spot. Yeah he's not as bad as some make him out to be, but he's not even close to being worth his price tag right now.
  11. Both POVs have valid points. When he's scoring, it's helping the scoreboard, but he's very streaky and disappears for long periods of time. When he's not scoring, he doesn't contribute much on the play. He's been not doing much this season and IMO not worth bringing back. Regardless, we need all the help we can get down the stretch and his goal and assist tonight are huge right now.
  12. Doesn't matter how weak the call was, it was a dumb play in a must win game. It's the small things that winning teams do consistently that make them a winning team.
  13. Those stats are also relative to the situation, similar to Garland. Majority of those minutes have been on PP2. OEL has produced whenever he's been on PP1. He's been one of the best defensemen in the league defensively this season. The trade wasn't great timing for us as an organization, but OEL has played well this season.
  14. Highmore - Lammikko - Lockwood * Speed, tenacity, 2 way ability, with a splash of skill.
  15. Have been really impressed with Travis. Calm, steady presence, but also has the ability to skate and move the puck. The previous regime may have given out picks for short term stop gaps, but I believe we made this deal because the new regime sees long-term value in Dermott. Seems like a 5 who has the ceiling of being a 3, but will likely top out to be a solid 4/5.
  16. Let's not forget how dominant Petey was before his wrist injury. He was literally one of the best C's in the league at only age 20/21. Guys a superstar and will only get better.
  17. Totally untrue. We are blessed to have so many players with leadership qualities. Petey is the epitome of leading by example, in a Sedin/Naslund esque mold. However, he doesn't just lead with offence, he also leads with defence, and he's been doing this since before he got into the NHL. He led his SHL team to a championship and became the golden boy. Miller is the best heart and soul player we've had since Kesler. I personally prefer heart and soul captains, which is why I've wanted guys like Miller and Kesler as captains, Linden esque leadership. But other types of leadership are beneficial as well.
  18. Moving this over to the Garland thread. To me the quality of competition argument is flawed because playing against higher competition doesn't automatically correlate with being better than players lower in the lineup. Boeser has mostly played wing with Miller/Petey I believe thus his competition and teammate levels being high. As you can see, his metrics aren't great. The other part of this is acknowledging the unknown of how Garland would play if he was consistently playing top 6 mins with a higher level of teammates. Also, imo Boeser has been outperformed by almost every player on the team this season. He's literally non existent and floating, picking up points here and there, mostly on the powerplay. Lammikko and Highmore have exceled being a shutdown line with Motte before he was traded and you could throw them out against any line.
  19. Fair point, I think a lot of what we do in the offseason will be related to what management thinks of our top players. IMO the core has to consist the calibre of first line forwards, top pair d men and elite goalie. The one exception to me would be a second line C who is a two way beast (Kesler esque). Pettersson projects as a elite 1C. Already was playing at that level minus the first half of this season. Miller is already an elite 1C/LW. Hughes is already an elite 1D. Demko is already an elite 1G. That's our core now. We NEED another top flight forward and top pair dman. Garland is probably the closest player we have to another first line forward, but even then, it isn't good enough. I wouldn't sleep on Schneider, looks like he can be a solid top pair guy. Unfortunately, other than trading Miller, doesn't seem like any of our other assets (not named Petey, Hughes and Demko) have the value to acquire him. If we decide to keep Miller, no other assets from those four should be untouchable. We need to bring in more picks and prospects and weaponize the added cap space to bring in more valuable players on top of that.
  20. Fair point, but quality of line mates matters a lot in that circumstance as well, especially for Garland being a playmaker. If he took Boeser's place on the first unit then he would average 3:10 of PP time instead of 1:41 playing with Pettersson/Miller/Hughes/Horvat instead of OEL/Pearson/Chiasson/Hunt, huge difference.
  21. Not that Miller is amazing defensively, but I wouldn't say Bo is better than Miller. IMO Miller's got a better stick and reads in the d-zone and has been relied more on the PK. It's more when Miller gets frustrated or careless that turn into weak defensive plays.
