It's probably just some of that old school mantra ....think Willie D., you have to make them earn it...by scoring goals while sitting on the bench... -
The Cautious in certain drills comment was from August 6th...he has been skating with NHL players since then and even if he still isn't totally confident in making quick turns....he still has 2 more weeks before training camp to get that back...
-
This fact just goes to prove my theory....a minor knock, if it is from the side can cause a major tear were there was only minor tears...maybe combining some smaller tears into one large tear and therefore destabilization of the knee joint...
-
I did hard physical labour for weeks ...several times ...after tearing my meniscus...it usually happens bit by bit you hear a pop in the worst cases and feel pain and then one big tear (Oli getting hit from the side) convinces you to go see a doc. I believe that is the case with Oli...if you look at him turn, it probably hasn't improved much since junior ...this may be why, we will see shortly.
-
I feel like a broken record here....I keep saying this fact... Playing with a torn meniscus will cause you to play slower and in particular turn slower... turn too fast and you tear a bit more meniscus and feel a bit more pain... This year we will see what we have in Oli, with the ability to move without pain I expect a much better reaction time on D.
-
If there are no injuries to the D. by the end of training camp...then I think they give Quinn a spot over Oli even if Oli has outperformed Quinn ( which I don't think will happen, but you never know)... So that may leave Oli having to start the year in Utica ...but seriously with our injury history...how long will it be until a call up.

Smart...Feisty...Skilled...Agile.....Fast....Determined...Confident...and another case of laking 1" or more in height to have been a lock for the 1st round...3" would have made him a top 11 pick! -
[2018-2019] Canucks Prospects Stat Tracker
Rollieo Del Fuego replied to Down by the River's topic in Prospects / Farm Team
Hughes should be 3rd to 5th...definitely ahead of Glass and Turcotte and I would put him ahead of Byram for this year anyway...probably Makar too... -

This kid needs to play with EP....who would have buried that cross ice feed to EP's one-timer spot shown in one of those highlights... Hog's tenacity and puck skills are looking NHL ready...one more year and I can see him stepping right in to a top 6 role... -
...They are over half the size of the person in middles' neck...so it just looks that way due to his size...

What will Canucks do in absence of Young Stars Classic?
Rollieo Del Fuego replied to MikeyD's topic in Prospects / Farm Team
Thanks for that...I thought it was limited to players with no pro level playing time... -

We may not have had enough rookies to fill the team ...with the college kids and the overseas kids not able to play...I would really like to see it back for next year though.... -

Hogs / EP / BB Miller / Horvat / Pods -
I take exception to that statement...as I said a few posts ago...in 2-3 years we can BEGIN to say which is likely the better player....a top pairing D. is more valuable than a 2nd line prick...any day... Even then...Oli could find another offensive gear at age 25 ( 4 years from now) and be a 50-60 point D.man...at age 25...so likely a 70 point D. man for at least a couple of his prime years...if that happens, it doesn't matter what Tchupchuke does, short of perennial 100 point seasons....Oli will have proven to be more Talented and more valuable.

Q: How did you sleep after the draft day? A: My roommate was Ilya Konovalov who was drafted next day. Ilya fell asleep but I could not until 3 am. First, replied to all congratulations, then was just thinking about what just happened. I thought about my life in Podolsk, how I played in White Bears as a kid. I did not even think about myself to be here even though watched TV coverage (of NHL drafts). And here I am – selected in the first round. I was happy. That is the telling answer...we have a player here, with heart and grounding....thank you JB! If this were Laine or Tchapuke they would have been up all night ....playing Fortnite or whatever it is called.... -
If my prediction holds true...even if it takes one more year...that Quinn and Oli will be our best D. in the playoffs... That would trump....bad choice of words there....anything that Tchapuke has done so far. 2-3 years from now we will BEGIN to see who is the more valuable player.

...It's just as if he knew what he was doing...all the way up the ice...and he says he's ready for the pros...It's hard to argue if he keeps that up...! -
That was sarcasm....if you read the whole reply...it is obvious I don't think Oli is a bust....I am trying to show how ridiculous it is to say that a 21 year old defenseman is a bust because he hasn't played in the NHL yet. Most NHL D. played there first year in the NHL well after there 21'st birthday.
-
Personally I wouldn't argue with people calling him a bust...the fact that he is not in the NHL yet proves it... As soon as April arrives and we are in the playoffs ...all because our 2 best D. have become Quinn and Oli...THEN ...all of us can act surprised or (more likely) claim to have really believed in the kids all along... Quinn and Oli will be our best D. in the playoffs. Just watch....
-
I hear you...but I think that having those lingering type injuries taken care of to the point were you realize that you can turn quickly and without pain ...will increase his physicallity and enable a much brighter head space.... I still say Xmas is when we should see him at the latest....
-
Having had a few meniscus tears....I can tell you that without a doubt, they slow you down and make it hard to turn well before you even know you have a tear... Give Oli 3-4 months this year to get to were he should be...and then make judgements if you want...I believe we will see a much more mobile D.

Who does Juolevi remind you of right now....Josi ...or Gragnani...? For me, there is no comparison Gragnani just skated in circles, avoiding checks or making one... Josi's calm but effective approach is just how Oli plays.... From the "pass it to Bulis article; Josi bears the closest similarity to Juolevi according to pGPS. Josi played his entire 20-year-old season in the AHL and didn’t make his NHL debut until he was 21, though he quickly established himself as a full-time NHLer. Now he’s a legitimate top-pairing defenceman, with six 40+ seasons under his belt, including 61 points in 2015-16. That’s a best case scenario for Juolevi, but there are some cautionary tales among Juolevi’s cohort. For example, the players in Juolevi’s cohort with the closest similarity, higher than Josi, is Marc-Andre Gragnani. Gragnani also made his AHL debut at 20, putting up 52 points in 78 games. While he was an AHL star, winning the Eddie Shore Award in 2011 as the league’s best defenceman, he never quite established himself in the NHL. He played 78 NHL games, 14 of them for the Vancouver Canucks during the 2011-12 season, before heading to the KHL.

2019 NHL Entry Draft in Vancouver, BC
Rollieo Del Fuego replied to Qwags's topic in Prospects / Farm Team
As I said before ...for a guy that never played a day of hockey, past midget anyway....he know his hockey... But he is wrong about Carson Focht....that was an astute pick that will pan out into a very valuable player...Carson can fly, he can shoot and he doesn't lose to many draws...he can play the PP and the PK and is hound dog just like Burrows was. Caufield over Podkozin may be the way we should have gone ...but I am happy with Podz' and only time will tell.... -
Utunen plays smart, mistake free hockey....he has a hell of a wrister and knows where to put it...he is going to get bigger, but plays pretty big already. I think he will be ready in 2-3 years and be a bit better (and similar too) Stecher... Asking to be Captain just shows how much confidence he has....

Carson is a lock for Team Canada...even as an overager that is quite something. Focht was used on the PK and on the PP, he was the first line center and he only lost one draw (that I saw)....he can wheel and he can deal... ...and he will be ready in a year or 2 instead of 3-4 years for most late picks. Kid reminds me of a faster Burrows with a bit of (hate to say it) Kesler thrown in....
