i find it fascinating that people want to blame the jays for this outcome look at what they were dealing with bautista made outrageous and out of this world contract demands at the start of the 2016 season now EE was making excessive demands in the jay's eyes they clearly decided they were not going to play that game they instead chose to make a fair and very valuable offer to EE through his agent they expected it to be rejected and it was they then moved on knowing EE would play out his demands in the market for weeks until he was forced to eat crow and accept a lesser deal the jays management has been accurate and fair in it's assessment from the start they still need to build a team when 2 key pieces were exploring the market seeking unrealistic contracts if the jays did not replenish their roster and EE chose to sign a couple of days ago with cleveland anyway the jays would be hooped and then management would be the idiots and should be fired i posted previously a while ago that i thought EE would get a 5 x $25 million deal but i am merely a fan and a spectator on these contract negotiations and i was wrong the jays were not respect them for that -

even if the rumour is accurate part of negotiation is to massage the time frame of an offer EE's agent could have made the jays out to be bullies and a bunch of jerks making a short fuse offer instead and demanded more time be provided he was so cocky about his view of the world that he rejected that offer... the best offer and now he wants to cry about it and blame the jays somehow -

um.. well you are wrong and so is EE and his agent no team offered him that, the top dollar value offered him was 20 million a year you are simply speculating based on your valuation of him the agent can tell the team they need 7 to 10 days to consider the offer and remind the team that EE wanted a contract before spring training and that did not happen so he played very well the entire season with no security and so he should be given some time to assess his situation and the free agent market place and not be rushed they can go to the media with their position and the jays are boxed in and have to wait but they should not have rejected that offer cuz when they do it is gone and there are other options a skilled agent could have used it is stupid and simplistic to just reject a credible offer and he is an idiot as a result.. -

i hope this is not a duplicate i responded to this post already but my response vaporized... mmmmm anyway i disagree anyone involved in negotiations knows you do not reject a quality offer unless you have received a better one and it is on the table the agent is in an idiot he should have taken every step possible to preserve and/or extend the jay offer until he had a better idea of the market -

some light reading for EE - enjoy Top 10 Worst Cities In America - Worst Places To Live 2016 There are winners and losers in everything. When it comes to livability, the cities on this list are definitely the losers. With broken educational systems, miserable weather and soaring crime rates, these cities sometimes feel like they're already in a post-apocalyptic future. Low graduation rates and a failing economy often go hand to hand in America's worst cities, severely impeding the ability of residents to move on to greener pastures. Using our proprietary Livability Score algorithm, we identified and filtered out the worst of America's cities to populate this list. We concentrated on cities that somehow managed to be home to at least 200,000 people despite their plethora of problems. How We Ranked The Cities Amenities: Lower scores for fewer nearby amenities like: grocery stores, restaurants, coffee shops, schools, parks, libraries, etc. Cost of Living: Lower scores for high cost of goods and services, groceries, health care, housing, transportation and utilities. Crime: Lower scores for high violent crime and high property crime. Violent crimes are more heavily weighted. Education: Lower scores for low test scores and high student to teacher ratio. Employment: Lower scores for low median household income and high unemployment rates. Housing: Lower scores for high housing price to median household ratio and low appreciation rates. Weather: Lower scores for average temperatures under 70° and above 75° and high precipitation. Here is the list of the top 10 Detroit, MI Stockton, CA Newark, NJ San Bernardino, CA Minneapolis, MN Philadelphia, PA St. Louis, MO Memphis, TN Cleveland, OH Buffalo, NY -

i previously posted the link re: blue jays payroll 2016 that number was confirmed by mlb.. a shade under 160 i think you have to compare the 20% to the starting payroll for the blue jays in 2016 as compared to 2017 not the final payroll if they start out at 165 million in 2017 they will add payroll during the season - they always do jays will sign bautista to bat lead off me thinks -

i was in toronto in the late 80s an early 90s and went to games back then they were really good i have not spent any money on the blue jays or rogers since that time i guess jays make money when i watch their games on tv otherwise i am not contributing financially oh, and i'm really curious about how much money rogers has made on the jays the past 3 years -

so there is no viable business model required in your view rogers should just throw money from other enterprises at the jays team top it up as high as possible, because we fans, well we just deserve that i guess but i have no idea why we do and why rogers should ignore usual business practices when it comes to the jays -

you realize the currency is usa dollars they will be spending close to 200 million canadian a chunk of their revenue is in canadian dollars seems to me rogers has stepped up the last couple of seasons edit: the highest spenders have lucrative private broadcasting deals which allows them to spend even more, i don't think any canadian broadcaster is prepared to pay anything close to the deals other teams have -

well you can look at the payroll in any manner you wish but to make sense of the 165 million payroll to start this season, you have to appreciate the jays mean all salaries, major league, minor, retained... etc... the 165 million will not just be used for the jays and mlb does not look at total salaries the way you choose to -

i think Kinzer is an idiot and is simply trying to wiggle out of a bad situation he created for EE. He was wrong to not accept the jays offer of 4 x $20 million since it was fair and the best offer put forward to date. If he believes that the jays and EE are like a hand and glove combo he should explain why that offer was refused. And really, why would the jays wait around for EE and not sign anyone else after he rejected their very fair offer (as it turns out), when that would paint them into a corner and give EE more leverage. Jays did the right thing, Kinzer did not. He is a big boy and should accept his gambit was ill informed and he ended up a loser agent for EE. -

well i read this managements actions as rebuilding the staring rotation last season already committing 125 million in payroll for 2017 looking to add 3 more players at least before the next season begins and spending payroll to start the season of over 150 million and keeping some extra payroll on hand to give them flexibility during the season to add another player or 2 and/or retain salary to allow them to adjust the roster and end up with salary commitments of near 170 million by the end of the 2017 season -

the jays paid out salaries just under 160 million (us dollars) for the 2016 season -

coastal.view replied to The Stork's topic in Off-Topic General
but if boston does that after 3 years and eats 25 million more in salary they will have paid him more than 38 million for each year of service - simply crazy 30 million is already too much and you advocate paying more as being smart? i take it you are not personally wealthy with your approach to finance -

the jays total salaries were around 159+ million this past season and have already said they will increase this year rumor is around 170 million here is a link to the 2016 total which i have seen confirmed by mlb http://www.spotrac.com/mlb/toronto-blue-jays/payroll/2016/ edit: the site you have linked does not include all salaries paid by the club and appears to only include amounts related to active salaries, which is not complete -

it's not only looking back at it in my view even if price was worth 30 million for a couple of years he is not worth that amount for 7 years at his age boston wanted him at any price and there really was no competition for him the jays were able to sign other pitchers and rebuild the starting rotation by not signing him they just might do the same thing with the offense by not signing ee and/or jb to the contracts they initially wanted and just to be really clear, price has never been even a decent playoff performer, so why would he be worth 30 million a season, he is consistent in the playoffs, he is mediocre at best, even the jays bumped him from the starting rotation in the last series when he was a jay (and that is likely why they did not offer him any contract) -

and price had a mediocre year and failed again in the playoffs and you really think the jays should have paid him 30 million a year? management did a very good job rebuilding the pitching was the strength of the team i do agree with the jays not giving ee and/or jb the huge contracts they are seeking another team can over pay for them like boston did for price -

very like minded thinking too many want the easy way out let's just repeat what has mostly worked in the past and expect it to keep working and do not really consider too much the cost to keep repeating the past i think it is time for change and to rebalance the offensive on the blue jays we want runs they do not have to mostly come from home runs -

neither ee or jose is worth long term what they are seeking in contract value they are spent we already got their best years time to move on i do not get the repeated posts on here about the jays being cheap they are in the top tier of payrolls they are being smart about ee and jose i support them -

why is everyone so fixated on ee or even jose for that matter these 2 players are close to being past their prime they are not worth the investment time to move on and create a better offensive balance to this team the jays are too one dimensional in their offensive approach long ball rarely wins champiionships -

well let's review what got the blue jays to the playoffs.. the biggest change from the previous year was starting pitching, starting pitching, starting pitching and people stewed about price being allowed to leave our offensive make up leads to inconsistent run production .. it is feast or famine a rebuild and rebalancing of the offense will make the jays stronger they need to be less one dimensional and focus also on small ball and offensive fundamentals a little rebuild in the bull pen is also required given what happened with the starting pitching staff i think this management team should get a lot of patience and confidence from jay's fans
