  1. Unsung hero this year IMHO. Long times without playing but when asked, plays with tenacity and physicality whether defense or forward. Mr. Utility.
  2. Actually...in the case of the Sedins and team toughness...we need less of that.
  3. Virtanen played like Tkachuk when he came to the NHL but had that coached out of him within a couple months. Instead of letting him be an impactful - though a little on the edge - young player, making an impact - he was immediately called on to tone it down and become a more responsible 200' player...you know...like Chaput and Megna who play the way they are supposed to. Tkachuk is walking a fine line but he was arguably the most impactful player on the ice last night and showed more grit and tenacity in that one game than our entire team has all year.
  4. That really sucks. Probably been our best forward the last couple weeks. Maybe JB wants to make sure there is room for Goldy to get some icetime
  5. Burrows has also expressed his desire to be involved in management following his retirement. I hope the Canucks are seriously considering that possibility. A guy like Burrows who has been a great ambassador and who fought his way into the league only to become a stalwart of this team would be a positive force to have around the team for years to come. The Canucks have enough and can always get more of the "suits" for their front office. A guy like Burrows would be able to relate to the players and bridge the gap between management and the room very effectively.
  6. It will be hard to see Burr move on especially if we are forced to hang on to other vets because of what have turned out to be bad contracts I.e. Edler, Eriksson. For a team re-building, burr and Hansen display the attitude and work ethic our young kids need. Our Swedish leaders do not IMO provide the on-ice leadership I want our kids to learn. Back to Burr....If we can move him and sign him back at a discount, that would be awesome. If he can't be traded, bring him back on a one year see deal at a discount.
  7. As much as his production is great, I'm excited about how he plays the game. A little nastiness is something the Nucks sorely need. If it comes from a ayer that can produce as well...Bonus.
  8. Sounds like JB may have found a gem. Look forward to seeing him develop. We are due for some good luck with prospects.
  9. Yup. I am sure Benning knows Burr would want to go to a contender not some re-building team. I would be fine if Burr could re-sign after the season on a 1 year deal and retire a Canuck.
  10. I agree. I am really torn. The way he has handled the last couple years and what he has done for Bo and Baer makes it hard to see him move on. Than again, he is 35 and if he could land a decent young prospect or pick, it is what this team needs to do. It doesn't make it any easier having watched him single-handedly win the game against Buffalo. VIntage Burr...if only he were 25 not 35.
  11. FROM AN ARTICLE BY THE SCORE. The 35-year-old is a pending unrestricted free agent, but he has a full no-trade clause that could make dealing him difficult. The Canucks aren't completely out of the playoff race thanks to the parity of the Western Conference, but Burrows said he'll talk to management when the time comes to make a decision. “If they think they’ve got to rebuild and they can get an asset for me, I’d feel … not an obligation, but I’d think about it,” he told MacIntyre. “Deep down in my heart, I want to make the playoffs with this team. And if something else happens, we’ll think about it. We’ll have a discussion for sure.” Burrows boosted his trade value over the weekend, scoring the game-winner and adding an assist in a victory Sunday over the Buffalo Sabres, one day after notching a goal and an assist in a loss to the Boston Bruins. His offensive production certainly isn't what it once was, but with 20 points in 50 games, he's only two points away from tying his output from all of last season. This guy is such a class act. He is willing to accommodate a move if it helps the team. I wish we had more vets willing to be this flexible.
  12. It certainly sounds like Jake was confused under WD as to what was expected and that TG has done a very good job of getting inside his head and motivating him. WD was also known for getting the most out of his players when he was in junior but since coming to the NHL, he has made it clear that he is not into development and makes decisions regarding deployment based on winning now. That could be based on management's mandate but seems to conflict somewhat with what Trevor and JB have said about bringing the youngsters along. You cannot expect to add rookies and not develop them. Even McDavid and Matthews are learning at the NHL level. Still, Senior management seems to send conflicting messages about getting younger and faster yet still signing older vets (Eriksson, Miller) and refusing to move NTC players. Perhaps with such a contradictory approach to things, it is no surprise Jake - and likely a number of our players - are somewhat confused as to roles and the direction the team is heading. Jake's comments sound very positive but they could also be construed as a knock on WD"s coaching as Jake makes it clear that it is refreshing to have clear communication and to have everyone buying into the system...the Nucks certainly play like a team where that is not the case. Louie and Guddy's struggles to adapt to the systems (Guddy has stated as much and Eriksson is clearly struggling) could confirm that WD really is struggling with his approach at the NHL level. I have not been happy with WD's deployment nor with how so many of our young guys are playing only because of injuries or because they "surprised" him with their play. Many of our kids have succeeded despite being put in difficult positions or not being given the chance to really showcase themselves. IF TG gets a chance to come the Vancouver as the head coach, I hope he will provide a better balance between playing the right way and in better utilizing the kids for their future development.
  13. Glad to see Jake starting to find his game in the AHL. IN hindsight, it is probably where he would have developed best. So many expectations and temptations being a 19 year old in the NHL, many just struggle with perspective. I hope he can continue to develop with the Comets because he has some very impressive talents that could translate very well to the NHL game.
  14. Buy him out in 4 if he declines. I think a lot of teams are looking at these veteran signings in that light.
  15. I am hopeful that his game translates quickly to the pros and he is ready to play back-up to Markstrom by next trade deadline. If not, we will likely be stuck with Miller and get no assets back. Not all goalies need years of development in the AHL and I hope Demko is one that doesn't.
  16. Kind of boggles the mind. Bob McKenzie describes him as probably the #1 college prospect available (after Vesey) with numerous NHL teams in pursuit and Vancouver landed him. If Benning hadn't signed him, the thread would have been "Benning out-GM'd again". I'm excited for a kid with his track-record and skills. Has the potential to be a very good NHLer.
  17. The point is the effectiveness of NHL defensemen under 6'. Who gives a rat's a$$ if they have played for the Canucks?!! The point is that we would love to have a Karlsson or Keith type player. ..and if you don't even know, or will not take responsibility, for what you are posting (Biega) no point continuing this dialogue.
  18. Lazy from you...that's priceless. You throw out Biega who I never mentioned and ignore Karlsson who is under 6'. You also conveniently ignore Stecher's weight which would indicate he is quite stocky and strong. You have not provided any evidence to back-up your position that a sub 6' defenceman with the size of Stecher and his talents is doomed to failure. Saying past D men under 6' for the Canucks didn't pan out so we should never consider one going forward is the epitome of lazy and a totally unfounded claim. The fact is many top NHL defencemen are in the same size/weight range as Stecher. HIs skill set could see him achieve success in the NHL as others of his size have.
  19. As I posted...Keith is listed at 6' and 192lbs. By your logic, Chicago should never have given him a shot at the NHL. How about Eric Karlsson? Listed at 5'11" - 6'0", and 190lbs. Same size as Stecher. He's obviously not an NHL caliber player by your standards either. I never mentioned Biega and for you to is just an weak attempt at deflecting the discussion away form the fact that your "standard" does not hold water in the real world. Size is always good but Stecher has other attributes that are highly valued in the NHL game and is not s "small" that he stands no chance of making the NHL.
  20. Define "small"? He is and inch or two shorter than ideal but I have seen him listed in the 192-195lb range. Tanev is 185 Bartkowski 196 Hutton 183 Sbisa 198 ..and Duncan Keith is 6'0" and 192lbs. pretty much the same size (maybe lighter) as Stecher. If it is true that he is above average in skating, puck handling, compete level etc...it doesn't seem his size should be an issue./
  21. I think Hutton is really benefiting by having WD as a coach. WD is a guy that stresses the positive all the time and Hutton is a very happy go lucky, glass half full kind of kid. A coach like Torts who would tend to come down hard on mistakes could break his spirit. With more confidence and experience, I feel Hutton will blossom into a top 2 D-man. His vision, skating and puck handling are exceptional. With more experience and coaching, he will be a stud.
  22. Not just on here but the sports pundits are going out of their way to lay the team's performance on Jake. Even Blackwood who stunk the rink out last game is getting far less negative press. Seems Canada needs a scapegoat to explain how they could lose and Jake is the poster boy. No mentioning his physical play or effective forecheck last game. No mention of the goal he set up early in the game, only how he was selfish and undisciplined. N one talking about Strome and how he spent 20-30 seconds more on every shift than his linemates every game which disrupts the chemistry and flow of the game. Or how he took a selfish stupid penalty earlier in the game. I guess now that the Nucks are not good enough to bother bashing nationally, the sports writers will turn their venom onto our prospects. As for Jake, I am not sure how long Benning will keep him with the team but I support his decision to throw the kid a bone by starting him back with the Nucks after the WJC experience and all the BS coming from it. Jake needs to be surrounded by his real teammates and get some support from vets who have been where he is.
  23. Agreed. He should be in the AHL but because of the rules, he can't be. So the decision to be made is does he benefit more learning from the pros in the NHL or from the kids in junior? Benning appears to feel the NHL is the answer.
  24. Instead of half a year in junior and then Utica, perhaps Benning thinks Jake will benefit from another half season in the NHL, with the coaches, trainers etc. and then next year he can go to Utica. Sending him to Calgary could be seen as a wasted half year in his development or even a place where he may regress or be used poorly.
  25. Jake played his best game of the tournament. He elevated his compete level and was very effective on the fore-check and with the puck. He was a victim of the European style of reffing. Only one of his penalties even comes close to getting called in the NHL where he has been playing all year. Not an excuse as he was not as disciplined as he should have been but Jake was picked because he fits Benning's model of what it takes to be successful in the NHL not the WJC. I am sure Jake is feeling very low right now and Benning made the right call in announcing he would return to the big club right away. I am not sure if JB intends to keep Jake up but sending him to juniors immediately after that last game could destroy the kids confidence for the rest of the year at least.
