[Rumour] Mikael Granlund Available
Canuck Surfer replied to aGENT's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Carrier is 5'11'' & 175lbs. If he had Ryan Ellis's ability to handle the puck under pressure. In the defensive end that is? He would already have more than 5 NHL games to his CV at age 23. As it is, he is a PP QB specialist that is not really going to supplant anyone in their line up. About to finish his post ELC 2knd 3 NHL contract having played just those 5 NHL games. You have a way of quoting the party line of each team. As if it is gospel. I recall 6 months ago you quoting the party speach, ie coaching stretegy, as spoken by their now just fired coach Laviolette. As reason they should not consider any of our forwards in trade. Because they would be a poor fit. But here we are & they have a new coach. We are ahead of them in the standings. And players on their own team are now on the trade block. But they don't need any of our guys? There is as much liklihood Carrier clears waivers next year. As there is him becoming the next Matt Grzylcyk. Clendenning was also an AHL all star. Stecher is a fearce battler in all zones by a comparison. There is a reason he is in the NHL and Carrier is not. I give Allard in their system a better chance. He is also that battler who punches above his weight defensively. And I believe Stecher would help Nashville more than Weber or Irwin who currently occupy their 6th & 7th man defensive roles. Price regardless, as Stecher has not earned any great raise. But is better than those two. -

Well? Granlund has withered & wilted in Nashville. I reckon it has more to do with Matt Duchesne. This wilting & withering? It seems to have followed him around... I suspect Granlund will make a good aquisition for some team. That he will be low cost based on circumstance could make it a win for someone. But I dont want our Canucks paying futures. I have very little interest in rentals. Cheap or otherwise. Unless vvery cheap. -
Toews & Keith get into scrap at morning skate
Canuck Surfer replied to Deets's topic in General Hockey Discussion
I agree. Like most defenders not named Pietrangelo? He has his demons. He makes play mistakes, defensively & offensively. He does not have Tanev's ice in his veins, can stop and puff a cigarette calmness, ability to read play. He is playing almost 22 minutes a night. Helped us score some goals, cost us some with gaffs. But his 6'7'' or 6'8'' size and his speed is undeniable. He even has some agility. Ability to handle the puck. I do wonder why he is not more effective? Its hockey smarts. Also undeniable. That he can handle those minutes regardless, create as much good as bad? That he can keep up with our best defenders, opposing teams forwards, physically? Does mean the coach can deploy our truly best defenders to their strengths. Tanev, Hughes, Edler all benefit from having Myers in the line up. -

Poolman being hurt has hurt the Jets for sure. I thought he was playing great as well. But compare apples to apples. Poolman is on an ELC. Any ELC playing well helps a team resolve issues. Myers is better value than Byfuglien so far this year is an equally incongruent, but true statement. Byfuglien's contract, and whatever it was happened between his physical in May, training camp in September has completely flucked the Jets. Its actually worse than Eriksson's ATM. Eriksson is at least playing. Every team has their ,istakes to deal with. And hot off the presses; https://thehockeynews.com/news/article/the-jets-defensive-deficiencies-are-catching-up -

Aho is currently playing behind Staal, instead of ahead. Like last year? And he has been spending time at RW. Not that that is an indictment. But does leave me wondering if they are good enough at C to be an elite team. On D Hamilton has been playing out of his mind. They are solid, more so than us for sure, but unspectacular behind Hamilton. Their real strength is on wing, Teravainen, Svech in particular, Necas & and an army of wqorker bee's, including on the farm which is also a good team. But they are ppor in net. Not sure bringing up Nedeljkovic will resolve that? I am holding out for Necas making a successfl conversion back to C before I can annoint Carolina. Aho getting the coaches trust for top minutes. And when Staal is their 3C, I will think they are truly dangerous. No doubt winning a bidding war for Pietro would create some problems for us. But it would be better money spent than the $12 mill we did. It would mean jetting Tamev & Markstrom to afford. Or a miracle dump of LE's cap hit. As I mentioned, losing Tanev & Marky might not actually make us better? Myers still has been useful talent in our line up. He never helped Winnipegs up tiempo game. He has ours. Not fantastic or anyting. I could be critical, complain his smarts dont match his skills. He does make brain farts. His skills also rescue him at other times, or create plays out of nothing. Does not recognize or capitalize on a high enough % of opportunities. But he has undeniable speed, size & skill. I am sure the Jets, price notwithstanding, would prefer him to Sbisa. I sure do. If the Jets could afford him oer Sbisa, I am sure they would have. -
Nice to see you back. I thought you got suspended, its been so long since I have noticed a post? All 3 of your NHL teams going well right now!

In Vancouver we felt fortunate to beat a top team last week. And a 3 & 1/2 series lead for the last Western play off spot if I am reading correct? Do we have another matchup this year?

I'm not putting it down to a ''character'' issue. But people at the top end of performance, particularly in coaching, are often, call them ''old school?'' You could choose to call such a coach task oriented. Or be less PC & call them hard ass, a drill sergeant, or whatever. A lot of players were very complimentary of Gallant. Said he communicated well, was fair. But I dont think its hard to tell who was in charge. I am saying he had nearly a 0.600 win % in the NHL with this expansion club. Two play off appearances. A cup final & a team currently in a play off position. I'm saying it looks like a power struggle. It does not mean I am right? Even more true, we are not likey to ever know. But a guy like Gallant is just as likely to tell his boss ''like it is'' as he is his players. Which does not always go over that well. See quotes by Mike Keenan, when Brian Burke was hired. And Burke's response. They are calling it ''performance related'' in Vegas? Trevor Linden will not go on record as saying he had any conflict of direction with FAQ or Benning either. Nontheless they are gone. I don't doubt someone in management wanted something different on the ice. ''Performance.'' Maybe see a component of strategium they felt falty. They are career hockey guy, probably something legitimate? I also don't doubt, speculate if you will, he told said manager to shove it up his hoo haa ''get me a better centre,'' or whatever. He was coming off a 1st place finish, 1st round loss with perenial loser Florida the year before he was fired in Florida. Their only appearance in the play off's in now , what,15 years I believe? Was above 0.500 % when he was fired twenty odd games in to the next season. But it was also ''performance'' related. Pacioretty had 37 points his last year in Montreal. 45 sp far this year. Stephenson is having a creer year, was a depth player in Washington. Karlsson has ''only'' 35 points so far this year. His best year in Clumbus was 25 points. Marschessault has been better under Gallant. Schmidt was a 16 minute a night guy in Washington, a top pair guy scoring twice as much, 21 minutes a night in Vegas. Theodore better than he was in Anaheim. I could go on... The guy actually has a great coaching record. -

DeBoer as a tactician? Will he get more out of Vegas than Gallant?? I gues we will find out. But I dont think so. I dont see them as strong enough down the middle. Thats where they get exposed. I also believed they overachieve with their D. Who strikes fear in opposing coaches among their D? More than the D, I dont think they are good enough down the middle! Karlsson was never more than a 3C until Gallant got ahold of him. But speaking of fear? He does not strike fear in me as a first line pivot. To me he is a v good 2knd line pivot. Stastny was ok as a 2knd line centre, but is really 3rd line material at this stage. But, as you said, they used to have that suffocating 3rd and 4th line? Which is not his game. I think they are doing well to make use of Chandler Stephenson as a 3C. Eakin has both been injured, and a dissapointment this year. But he is just 28, probably too banged up. He was a part of that suffocating bottom 6. Glass is stuck for minutes, because he is the classic must score and be in the top 6 guy. But not ready in the eyes of the coach. Or he would have minutes being given to Stastny & Karlsson if he was ready. The problem with Vegas is they overcommitted to some otherwise great wingers. Stone & Patches. But who builds a team around wingers, not pivots or D? -

Shocking from my viewpoint. I did not see Vegas as being deployed poorly or playing a style unsuited to them. If anything, they overachieved during his tenure. And were not horribly behind this year, Considering how rudely he was dumpled in Florida? I have theory is he may be a hard ass in dealing with upper management. It may have become easy to dump him when you have a 4 or 5 game slump. But I suspect it was not purely about performance. They were just more PC about it than Florida. -

Free Agency Reunion adding toughness

I was sorta suggesting our prospect pool will provide the guy; 3 forwards (Madden, Hoglander & Podz) all among the worlds 50 best prospects not in the NHL. They would be the top candidates. We may not have them now? But will probably have at least one next year. All three the year after? -

Do we? Miller Petey Boeser Tick Pearson Bo Maybe? Maybe Jake has been ok at times, cough Loui has played there. Ferland was designed to be there! And maybe still will be? Top 6 that is... Plus we have prospects Madden, Podkolzin & Hoglander who will be, at worst, candidates. Plus, Jake & even Gaudette. Pearson looking a candidate to be re-signed after next year, he's been really good. I think Hoglander will ultimately, by 2021/22, maybe if we're lucky, and certainly be in our top 6. He will add an element of speed, and agility which will be remarkable with some our skill players. So I see Miller dropping to the 2knd line. -

So Florida making a little dent in the standings. 4th in Fantasy points MTD. And we will have some more today. Eberle starting to find a MoJo he has not has for a year or three? And doing it with Barzal, which is fantastic news. May cost us some money, signing Barzal this summer? But a good problem to have. The big news is all the extra goalie points this year. Bishop healthy & Tristan Jarry quietly leading the NHL in save % and GAA. Already past our goalie points LY. I dont know that the play off's looking like a possibility? Changes our rebuild outlook for the year. But we may be standing pat, versus sellers at the deadline? Reward players like Chara & Pavelski who signed with us to help get us in the race... -
My guess is Schaller. Loui has been serviceable on the 2knd and 3rd line lately. But? Greeen likes those two digger lines to balance the shifts. Schaller / Beagle / Motte is a great 4th line! It could easily be Loui. Presumably Ferland is the 2kknd / erd line guy?

Just a bump, @Primal Optimist Thanks as always! -
Cheers for that VC. Whomever hated JB before, whatever mistakes he has made in his career as a GM? Thats amazing! Also a good stat for Green. Everyone use to dump on AV because he would not play rookies. Not me BTW. Green has three all stars in a row! I wonder the last time a team sent a rookie to the all star game 3 years in a row?

Who has Kovalchuck? Wicked, wicked OT winning snipe. And Kassian going nuts on my pal Tkachuk. Hockey is fun!
-
So. We want to move a goalie? Maybe two... Mackenzie Blackwood, or John Gibson. Interest has surfaced on Gibson, several times an all star. Up to Luke warm overall, the normal penny pinchers and an excellent offer, but one I cannot afford cap wise on Mackenzie Blackwood. Blackwood, 14 wins a shutout & 5 OT losses = 180 Fantasy points. Top 5 on most teams in CDCFL for the lucky best offer! Most likely cost for Blackwood a mid tier play off forward & prospect. Or top prospect.

I like a good exec / commish that is involved, makes good judgement calls. It does add to the drama & stress, time. Research is required? But makes for a better pool if willing to take it on. Example, player in his prime, performing on a team with an NMC? Why would he have a 3 team list. I watched a fantasy play off team allowed trade Henrik not Daniel? Example, same player 5 years later now on an 8 team NTC. Now on a rebuilding club, in press box more than playing & 4th line 8 min a game? Will go anywhere... Example, player waives for home town, or to play with brother, or junior coach who just got hired. But only one home town, signing / clause waive every few years per team. Example, key players or rentals with value only top play off teams Example, players will gravitate to GM's that win. EXAMPLE; college and Euro rookies don't sign with the team that always trades their rookies. Just because they appear to have a role, because they always trade rookies! It does extend across all components in being logical. I don't like the roll dice concept. Just be consistent in the formula's. But take the penalties away from playing in Winnipeg / Edmonton, or everyone wants to play in Sunny tax free Florida type bias's out. So the game is otherwise an even playing field. Just use good common sense. Also? New hires do not get grace. Why would a new hire get to flush Seabook's contract with 7 years left for example? Therefore, negotiating contracts also requires sense. Fantasy GM's go overboard even more than real ones, don't also over insist on FULL NMC's for 8 years. Starts rolling down clauses as the term s longer. Have fantasy point formula's for re=signing RFA's. Sense across the board... -
