  1. ''Focht!'' When asked a good question? > Who, among the guys you don't know well, either new guys, or young players, stood out today in scrimmage. Then warned everyone not to read too much into it, it's early. Many are tired, nervous. Might be better? But ''Focht was top of mind.'' And Rafferty looked good. Dribbled one or two reasons why. No one else mentioned.
  2. Interesting comments on who he is as a player at the end. What he can bring to the team. The last comment was I can make a play when I have to? But before that was mentioned; > reliable 200 foot player > skate up and down the line up. > Play wing, either, or centre. > Add some speed, get in and disrupt on the fore-check This a team first player folks, one you will enjoy watching?
  3. Interesting take. Straight points per game = $$$'s? I'm sure Boeser's agent argues it, but so to does Meiers agent argue attributes on offer... My own take is; Boeser > greater than Nylander. But not by significant margins. And in my look, I saw the back to back 60 points + points for being a centre.. Which Brock has not achieved. Added to my conclusion Nylander was IMO overpaid. In comparison I saw $6 x 7mill as fair. Boeser > than Meier. Also not by significant margins. Position flexibility & physicality being Meier advantages. I did not have a problem being over 4 x $6 mill? Did not like the huge qualifying salary on the last year of Meier's deal. Would rather pay a higher AAV than accept that clause. Boeser = Gaudreau? I don't buy that. Not yet anyway. Mini stick of dybamite, some flaws. But he makes that team tick. Scores, passes, creates & drives tempo. Helps the team accomplish its game style! Not sure I would quibble too much on the figure you came up with though; 6 x $7.25 mill. Maybe Gaudreau was underpaid? What is a 1/4 mill between friends? edit > thanks for the reply!
  4. Provorov just signed @ $6.7 mill x 6 years. Boeser is more offensively dynamic. Provorov, I suppose like Brock, is coming off a bit of a down year. Sill an exciting young player! But Provorov is a 25 minute a game, all situations defenseman. In most regards, more important to his team than Boeser? My take? Provorov decided that some of the arguments, not perfect possession metrics, were going to weigh down discussions. Might have been a tiny bit cheap. I had both projected at the 6 x $7 mill. At the end of the day? He wanted to play. $40 million bucks is still a hell of a life prize. I would not be against the $7.15 mill deal Keller signed. Clayton has had better, and worse seasons than Boeser. Arguably goals are worth more than speed & agility? So $7.25 or $7.35 on 8 years for Boeser the better goal scorer?
  5. No, he did not deserve more? No he should have accepted that figure if it was, in fact, correct? I personally believe that would have been a pretty good offer. A marginal raise on Nylander. Boeser more grounded, some extra size. A little less volatile in other area's of the game. But by no means a stealth defensive weapon. For all the storm clouds surrounding Nylander. he's a very talented player. Its also higher than Pastrnak's deal. But I suppose two years inflation?
  6. Be a great surprise if Woo is ready? They say he is physically. But I would bet he'll need some time for the speed. Lest we ruin his confidence. Slow an steady wins the race! And we, fingers crossed, also may get Tryamkin back...
  7. Next summer will be tight. But not skin tight. Really, we can go status quo. Markstrom & Tanev are potentially coming off the books, but also Schaller. Virtanen & Stecher will be due raises. Nothing dramatic as yet. If they do surprise and jump up the tables. It will be a good problem? Effectively we could sign one free agent? Say Tyson Barrie. If two of three among Markstrom, Tanev & devil in the room Eriksson are dispatched. Should be able to keep all bodies? But have no play money, If one of Tanev, Markstrom & Eriksson are no longer here. I am assuming at least one, most likely Tanev will move on.
  8. Its still an 8 & 1/2 hour drive. But it is close to home, as close as he can get without us trading him to Minnesota. People should let it play out without hanging to much sh!t on the players. Some guys deserve it. Boeser has been a model citizen. Has said he loves it here, is happy to stay long term. I don't advocate overpaying him to be here. just letting it play out without drama. Drama queen's in Candaian markets, fans & media, are a deterrent to many players playing North of the border.
  9. This is also a pretty good exit strategy. Viable. May not get a ton, but viable.
  10. Yeah I agree. Connor and Laine are top line wingers on virtually any team in the league. You would make it if you were Buffalo, Winnipeg? Probably not! In a perfect world Risto is one of the better top 4 D you could grab as an asset. Top pair & top minutes on Buffalo recently, because it was, well, Buffalo. Would he command Ehlers? Probably still needs a throw in. @Monty ?
  11. LOL o LOL, I howled, but so true... Its actually very clever; #assetmanagement My only quim, could see Biega down via waivers. If the Loui story did not pan out as you project. Or if Gaudette compells himself onto the roster. Or Juolevi? Biega, at over 30, is also fundamentally waiver exempt. He's small enough he slides through the strainer on the way... I do think you have the roster nailed. I take Miller on Petey's line, but that's being fussy. Green will blend & rotate those guys a lot.
  12. Very interesting. Fair IMO. Pays him big dollars, $8 mill, and then declines as Morrisey would naturally be declining. As to Myers comparisons? Morrisey is better. But is getting paid $8 mill now... Not the $6.2mill AAV. Morrisey may have sold off some potential value in the years where he is Myers current age? At that time he will be making $4.8 mill. With inflation, its probably safe to say those are discounted years? In return for the $50 mill guaranteed contract. $8 mill is, however, probably generous for a defensive D. Who else, Vlassic, who's primary value is on the defensive side of the puck gets a $50 mill contract? If it was Connor they would have to pay a lot. His speed is an un-guardable weapon. So too can be Laine as a goal scorer, but there is plenty left on the table in regard to his game & attitude. But his 18 goals in November is too much potential to sell inexpensively. Risto is not as big a dumpster fire sell off as you imagine. Its my opinion, but would bet the house he's not going to be sold for peanuts. He played 24 min 38 seconds average time on ice last season. He's 6'4'' & scored 40 points the last 4 years. Short list any D who scored 40 points each of the last 4 years? Short list 24 plus minute D men, and 6'4'' ones who can skate. It will be a short list. He's worth more than you think. Not saying there are not holes in his game. Not saying the Sabre's have not given themselves RHD, PMD's no less, options who could handle some of his scoring. The strength he brings without some of the weakness. I would still suggest Bogosian is odd man out. By natural attrition next summer. But if Risto would command, even with a decent throw in on the Sabres behalf, either Laine or Connor? It would emphasize that he did have value. And you would make the deal if you were Buffalo. Trade from strength, gain the scoring & speed up front! In a potential deal, I would suggest Ehlers is both more expendable. Especially if the Jets view Vesalainen as ready. But a nice match, a closer match value wise than Connor or Laine. Ehlers a very good player himself, but knocked down the depth chart by the immaculate Connor.
  13. My observation; Toronto, Calgary, albeit without prolonged droughts, Montreal without droughts & Edmonton have all supported hockey when their team was getting hammered. Winnipeg supported a pretty soft start for its team. I am very interested if their support is retained as they start to have some hurdles? Vancouver almost left town before Burkie & even before Pat Quinn arrived. Owners were losing $25 & $50 mill a year. To me that makes them better hockey markets than Vancouver. Based on population, we do have better opportunity than all but Toronto & Montreal. To be more profitable in good times? We made big bucks, top 5 in the NHL when we were winning 2009 -2012. Therefore, to some degree, ability to be a top team in the standings? But I don't think its fair to say we are a better hockey market. Our arena, even with Pettersson, one of 4 or 6 of the most exciting rookies in a generation? We still have not had a full barn... Unlike most, I've lived in Calgary, Winnipeg, Edmonton and Vancouver. My family now stays Ottawa. I hated Edmonton. Winnipeg was better than advertised. Calgary attractive, as was Vancouver. What would I do as GM? Before I got in to on ice strategy. I would be looking at as many ways as possible to promote and grow the game. Vancouver made $250 mill in their heyday. As soon as you pass $50 mill? A number I believe the teams deserve first, considering the owners investment. $1 in $5 give back directly to the game. Uniforms, skates for community clubs, pay their referees's & sponsor their tournaments. Help pay for busses for junior age teams. Every NHL home game, two kids teams get free tickets. The teams do a lot already to be fair. Work with charities. Encourage the league to not support bad markets. Arizona has had, what 6 owners in 12 years? Revenue sharing, offering NHL cash to teams like Florida, need to be slowed down. They would rather watch swap buggy racing & wrestling alligators. I would be happier with the NHL supporting junior aged teams in Milwakee & Wyoming. Grow the game at a grass roots level. More players growing up with the game in markets that have ice rinks is more likely to make American markets viable. Than supporting owners in Carolina with TV money. That's a risk. Bettman firmly bet you get better TV ratings by having a National competition in the US. But I don't see that working! Which, naturally, affects labour markets. AHEM, where players want to play. Of course players would rather play in Florida than Winnipeg. But not if they could make $5 mill in Winnipeg. $2 mill in Florida. Florida barely reports the salary cap as total revenue. Including revenue sharing, and govt. subsidies. All the Canadian teams except Winnipeg & Ottawa can pay the salary cap. They deserve players more than teams milking revenue sharing. In terms of hockey strategy? Sell patience to the market. The second biggest reason US markets are so much more successful, in terms of winning rosters? Their teams are not under the same scrutiny. Their GM's the same pressure. Some are? Minnesota may never win because their owner is an idiot. Don't let peer pressure on CDC, riots in the streets, mayhem on twitter influence you to make bad contract decisions. Make players more available for autographs, tv appearances. Discourage tv & radio markets that turn hockey player lives into the Jerry Springer show. Which then buys Jake Virtanen, Olli Juolevi time to develop. Instead of having to hide out, avoid looking at his phone to see what people are saying. I was not a fan of trading draft picks for Miller? Let the team take an extra year to be good. Sell EP, sell a hardworking, hard checking game style. That's how Calgary survived the years before, and just as Gaudreau & Monahan arrived. People support a hard working team. More than an overpaid team that does not care. But then also, the team would have a longer stay in the standings better grades. I am, in spite of Eriksson, not a fan of intentionally letting the team be bad. I don't mind money for UFA's. But I'd get another Dorsett before I paid for pure hockey talents. Mogilny was better than Eriksson. But he did not care if he was here either? So I am saying sure, pay money, not draft picks. But on lunch bucket guys who give their heart and soul. Patrick Maroon? I like Beagle just like I liked Dorsett. I liked Malhotra. I liked Torres. Get the talent guys by drafting them.
  14. He is making 1/3rd of $3.5 mill for his buyout. $1.133 or whatever that math is this year and next. Guess he is just deciding an extra $700K, the chance to still play is worth more than his pride. Good for him.
  15. Your viewpoint as a whole is fair, but only to a point. Problems may have been inherited. You can still deal with them fairly. We raised this issue last summer. Again when the Ottawa / LA / Pitt / Winnipeg, moves were made. Then 2 weeks ago... Each time the response was the ''exec team did what they thought was best.'' That was that, over and over. If any discussion, or solutions resulted, we were not made aware of it. It made the game less fun.
  16. @Master Mind @Jaku @thejazz97 I have decided to resign. This vote is poorly done, and not necessary. Ottawa, Pittsburgh, LA & Vancouver have all swapped locations without public votes this summer. Nor were we consulted 2 years ago when Carolina was moved. The Carolina move was poorly constructed, and was never right. All these other moves circling around, and nobody noticed, or paid much attention even when asked to correct the earlier mistake. Putting it to a vote now? I'd like to thank everyone for there time, the chance to participate & all the banter. As much as I am mad, I also thank the exec groups, past & present, for putting there time and effort to run the league. It is & was appreciated.
  17. Who really is concerned with what Guerin says? And no disrespect intended. Any GM will add their teams spin. Never mind that Guerin is new, adrenelinehigh of being hired. Even Benning was caught out on some of his early days statements / decisions; Sutter = Foundational. Minnesota does have one of the best top 4 D's in the league. But don't have any effective depth behind it on D, nor prospect strength. It would be also completely pragmatic to NOT trade Dumba for Boeser. Then talk his guy up, his team up. It is reality he has no depth to trade Dumba. It would signal a rebuild. A strip down & live with results, to get Boeser. One his owner is not willing to accept. One many pundits believe, like they did the Caucks 3 years ago, should embrace. But it won't happen. And its exactly that lack of depth? As well as some of the veteran contracts holding them back. A mistaken sense the team owes them something. Its actually strikingly like us 3 & 4 years ago. More so than Dumba himself getting injured that derailed their season. Patteryn & Seeler are, just my opinion, good 7th & 8th D men. 3rd Pair? Now that's pushing it. 2knd pair if someone is hurt??? Someone always gets hurt! Eeeeewwww! Just butt awful! As per my comments above; Just 4 guys in a team of 23. Yes an excellent top 4. No not a good team.
  18. I'm still hoping for some sanity. Has the exec team discussed this? @Salter, @Jaku, @thejazz97 I remain a bit dazzled that nobody noticed they moved a first place team into another division. Look at the standings the year after the move below. Pittsburgh finished with 5000 points, Philly 4900. Would have finished 3rd & 4th in the Atlantic. The Metro was not this amazing all powerful, unstoppable force. The move accomplished sweet F all! But Atlantic teams all drew tougher match ups the next two years because this mistake move was made. Will again this year? Metro teams got easy 1st round match ups. https://www.fantrax.com/fantasy/league/m72rn0ipj447nj8d/home It really should not be a difficult decision. It's disappointing nothing has been done yet, should never have happened in the first place.
  19. Hey Jazz, or @Salter May I please ask some easy clean up items on my roster sheet? Delete; Johan Sunderstrom Spencer Watson Mackoy Erkamps Gustav Olofsson Matt Finn All were free agents we did not extend offers, qualifying or otherwise to... Thanks for your service boys!
  20. Kesler & Perry are gone. They might no longer be stale, smell stale, look stale. Attract mould as you open the door to jump on the ice... Kase will be healthy, if still with the team. I guess that's something? Its not just replace Perry & Kesler. Replace Montour... Too many rookies, thrown in too early, too soon, too deep! We had Elias frickin Pettersson. And still were not that close that early. Those rookies, maybe I should not limit them? I just don't believe they can get 4 or 5 rookies to play at that level. Just my opinion. Mt honest take is they are more advanced than when we had Bo as a 21 year old. They had Rakell, some young D. They already have Zegras, their first new lotto calibre talent to go with Gibson. Will need one or two more. Even if all turn out, no hick-ups, and do it quickly? Its going to take 2 or 3 more years..
  21. Nice to be a hockey team in Southern California. Not frozen Edmonton... Players waive to be there, even sign extensions... Even when your team sulks!
  22. I remain absolutely stunned Anaheim traded Brandon Montour. Guhle ia a good prospect, but another one of the LHD. They are strong at LHD with Larson tipped to grab the 3rd pair LHD role, Guhle next in line. Larson appeared to have made their team 2 years ago, was injured last year. You would think Montour had ants in all the wives pants? I would speculate Lundestrom as part of the return. Reasonably strong at C depth, propects & as a whole. They have Sam Steel, Derek Grant is a capable vet, and Trevor Zegras in the system & due as early as next year. A package of himself & Max Jones would tick a lot of boxes for Carolina. Also strong in NHL and prospect depth with Comtois, Nick Ritchie, the WHL superkid Brayden Tracey a little bit further into the chart. I see both Lundestrom & Jones as valuable, but more affordable in terms of depth than Kase to give up. Losing Kase would create a hole. Troy Terry and Devin Shore play both wing and pivot. But I doubt they move Terry & Shore is just not that big a lure. It just adds to depth making a deal possible. My speculation > Lundestrom & Max Jones for Faulk. This is funny! But I don't think he really factors. He puts the d in depth, not in defence. There are CDC geniuses who believed Sutter, and his 6 points last year might command Faulk?
