[Signing] Flames Sign Sam Bennett
Canuck Surfer replied to drofssalg's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
It is, what, 6 forwards, 3 D and a goalie? Or any 8 skaters + a goalie?? My crack at their expansion list; Forwards: Gaudreau, Monahan, Lindholm, Tkachuk, Backlund, then Dube, Bennett or Jankowski? Defenceman: Giordano, Hanafin, then a big dilemma Rasmus Andresson or Valimaki? Goalie, who cares at this point? If I'm them, I'm going option B, protecting Gaudreau, Monahan, Tkachuk, Lindholm, Andresson, Valimaki, Habafin, Gio and a goalie. Its too big a loss on D in option A. So, if today, teams could pick Jankowski or Backlund. I don't think Bennett is most attractive in either circumstance... -
[Signing] Capitals re-sign Christian Djoos
Canuck Surfer replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Had a strong development path. Good SHL results & at a young age, then first good, moving to fantastic AHL production. Before coming to the NHL? Just kept getting better. It seemed like he was on his way... https://www.eliteprospects.com/player/33201/christian-djoos I'm very curious if he can anchor himself into the Caps line up for Alexayev, Johanson & some of their prospects surface? He has slipped behind guys our Troy Stecher. -
[Signing] Flames Sign Sam Bennett
Canuck Surfer replied to drofssalg's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Their Virtanen. Ours has more size and speed. Theirs has some puck skill, sticks his nose in more puck battles. Both a bit underwhelming considering their draft position. Both, in spite of that, still pretty useful players with underlying potential. Neither are draft dud's. Both will have decent careers over 7 or 10 years. You take these players, still, when you can get them!- 77 replies

You need to read the chart. We, or whomever takes him on in trade, achieve almost no cap savings the next 3 years buying him out. You are correct in understanding, there may be a cap floor team that trades for him. But he will most likely play.

Can we draft, then make trades. Or will Fantrx reject, and force us to pick positionally, when push comes to shove?

Elite Keeper League 2019/2020 -[4 GM Positions Available]
Canuck Surfer replied to Relyt Krets's topic in Fantasy Hockey
So the Panthers from, literally from Nov 1st did not budge from 25th spot? Not once did we drop in the turtle derby, nor gain a spot. So some changes, deadline to now! Outgoing Reilly Smith, Ryan Johansen, Justin Williams. Three out, now Larkin, Pavelski & Bonino into their top 9 roles. But we also received a lot of futures and cap space. No D out, add Zdeno Chara, Kris Russel then Jake Bean as first call up, 3 other D Ty Smith, Jesper Sellgren, Steven Santini also knocking on the door. We further added a, guess what after 5 F points last year, a backup goalie? We could have as many as 5 extra bodies in routine roles. 3 forwards, 4 D and 2 goalies looking to crack rosters, so some depth! As we are also not starting with Bishop, Andrew Ladd, Christian Djoos or Paul Stastny, each who missed some, to much of last year on IR. How does it look? We now have ten players ranked by NHL.com as top 250 in the NHL; Bishop, Larkin, Jones, Pavelski, Barzal, Eberle, Stastny, Dunn, Sanheim & Jesper Bratt; https://www.nhl.com/news/nhl-fantasy-hockey-top-250-rankings-players-2019-20/c-281505474?tid=277729150 Between the extra depth, a little more firepower with Pavelski & Larkin, and goaltending, we hope & believe we will be on, or about the play off threshold. https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1e5sEQfJ_DRZGKQTVfv6nxR8N1_IVNfWKOR2fsWtgpr0/edit#gid=1629794221 -
I enjoyed this post, thanks. You have hit the cruxt of it, in that we our system produces players who are effective on the ELC's? We should be in pretty good shape. > 2020/21 Tanev's salary comes off the books. We're ok if Tryamkin, Woo or Juolevi arrive? Does leave some left / right questions. Tanev's money goes to re-signing Markstrom? We have flex if Demko is ready and a back up emerges. Schaller and Leivo come off the books. Which requires Gaudette winning a FT role, another rookie ready for spot duty. MaCewen, Lockwood? If Eriksson or another salary leaves, say Markstrom again, pretty easy to look at Barrie. Or bring back Chris Tanev... > 2021/22 Is the real year we need rookies & young players. Sutter, Baertschi & Pearson, Spooners penalty come off the books. And all of our D except Myers. We only have 8 players assuming Brock signs now, among them 7 forwards, 1 D and no goalie signed. But $43 mill aprox. in cap space? Several players will have resigned in between, presumably Gaudette, Virtanen, Stecher, Juolevi, Edler after expansion, maybe Tryamkin, on top of Pettersson & Hughes against that $43. In 2021/22 having only one D currently signed scares me. I think we have numerous forward candidates to join the team at this time. Podkolzin, Hoglander, Lind, Lockwood, Madden. Being able to add Juolevi, Tryamkin & Woo, having Sautner and Brisbois is a bit scary considering we need 5 D. ALL 5 have to become core players and be integrated? The cap suggests we may not have room for Tyson Barrie next year. Or someone like him. Reality says we will be moving Loui Eriksson to make room. I understood to terminate, he had to retire from the NHL. ie could sign in Europe like Datsyuk. But could only come back to the NHL on the same team, or if the same team traded him, like Kovalchuk. Kovalchuk had to wait till all the years on his Jersey deal expired was my understanding. Honest question? Loui's bonuses are guaranteed. $4mill this year already paid, followed by $3 mill and $1 mill. $8 mill. We pay & 100% of any signing bonuses in a buyout counts against our cap. 2/3rds the salary over twice the term. To buy out we only save $1.67 mill in real cash, and have all these cap hits. Loui Eriksson's contract is pretty buyout proof.

[Report] Eriksson “NOT” likely to be moved on
Canuck Surfer replied to Provost's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
I really like this post, this suggestion. Negative value acknowledged, accepted. Step one, two, three. Three separate strategies to absorb the negative value. No one so onerous, Benning gets fired for making that call to FAQ? I also realize it was more than one kick in the face that saw Gillis fired. But how quickly, after he paid out AV & Luongo was punted? Did Gillis see his noose tightened beyond even what the most erotic freak could handle If one things gets FAQ mad? It's paying out $10 & $20 mill deals for write off's. That see the team move backwards, away from winning teams that ring play off cash registers! -
Fantastic cover. I Dusty Springfield. But this is so F'ing good...

Mike Gillis Eyes NHL Return
Canuck Surfer replied to Silver Ghost's topic in General Hockey Discussion
Gillis may have been more under the pump with ownership more than anything? Lost that room... Became handcuffed. If intervention rumours are true, but who knows? I do believe it was time to move on when he was let go. But he made great decisions to fill out our team in 2010. Was innovative & ran a great organization. Would be more settled if he had a new chance & I believe he deserves one. -
We could use Tyson Barrie! Don't kid yourself. We just cannot afford what his, as you quoted, $8 to $9 million dollar salary. I think it will be $7.5 mill. @Bert Diesel's point is that while we are paying, i'll use the term premium, contracts for, and ii'll use the terms solid, or useful players like Sutter or Beagle? We cannot afford to go to market for a approaching premium UFA like Tyson Barrie. Fundamentally he is saying we should not have propped up last years team with mid level contracts. Bert is arguing Beagle or Sutter are not worth their contracts. I personally do not agree, do not disagree. My observation is there are a LOT contracts like that in the NHL. Show me a good team that does not have any? Are there bargains? Sure. But usually found in committing a retread money puck signing to a roster spot. Gets lucky with a Euro signing, who does not end up in the minors. Edmonton found one in Chiasson last year. But did he make Edmonton a better team? No. He was just a slightly better than average warm body. This year he makes more than Schaller. OK, maybe they win on that one. More than Jake, more than Leivo, more than Motte. I'd take any of those three. Calgary is paying Frolik what we are paying Sutter. Pitt is paying Brandon Tanev what we are paying Beagle. These contracts are not what kills a team. Every team off the floor has players like these, cost of business IMO. You can argue Sutter's contracts is bad because he's always injured. Same with Tanev. But every team has injuries. They are otherwise usefil, not perfect players. We are paying Lou's recapture penalty, $3 mill. We are paying Spooners buyout, the end result of giving Gagner 3 years, $1 mill. We have a $6 mill cap hit on Eriksson. That is $10 mill for about $2.5 mill, if we're being generous, in production. The worst of which was Gagner, everybody knew he was a slack ass. Eriksson's a disaster, but one many teams were, and are making. He was fit, fast, coming off a 30 goal campaign. One could argue, you should not invest that, for 6 years in a 31 year old athlete. We paid Miller $6 mill. But only for 3 years. Had we done the same with Eriksson, we would have traded him for a 3rd round pick last deadline. And Luongo's contract was $65 million bucks, which should never have been made because he really did not want to be here. But also because it should never have been made! These are the killers! Had we no ''awful'' deals, we would still have flexibility to add a Barrie. By the end of this year, I would still be surprised if there was not a way to move Eriksson's contract. He will not be owed barely any money after next years $ 3mill bonus. $5 mill cash for the last two years. And have a cap hit of $6 mill for a salary cap floor team. And look, it should surprise no one. Not Bert, not CDC. Last year we spent $10 mill on Beagle, Roussel, Schaller. This year we spent $15 mill plus a first on Miller, Myers & Ferland. And poof, suddenly we're competitive! But wont have $10 mill for a premium free agent. NYR's, San Jose & Vegas spent bigger. And they have to dump cap now. If we wanted to spend more, there would be takers for Roussel, Pearson, Baertschi. They are good to very good mid level players. The point , we cannot go big every year UFA! Drop Tanev, and trade Baertschi, give his roster spot to Hogland on an ELC next year? Tanev, Schaller & Leivo ar UFA next summer, $8 mill! So you may very well see Barrie next year! Even without shedding Eriksson... The only really interesting move for next summer? Will we re-sign Markstrom for $5.5 or $6.5 mill? Or will Demko take over. If Demko is ready, we could be very dangerous!

It could be argued that, maybe, and I mean maybe, aside from Fantenburg (who is a great 7th D man) all the incoming players are better than all the outgoing players? Awesome sh!tz! And I love the succession plan laid out later in your post!

Agent is convinced Ristolainen's days in Buffalo are numbered. They currently have a top 3 right side in the NHL? Ristolainen, Bogosian, Montour, Colin Miller & rookie Jokiharju are all NHL calibre D. Bogosian to an extent & Jokiharju known for some defence inclusive? It does look like a team we could make a trade with.
