  1. It is also worth mentioning; Ehrhoff was an elite offensive & power play D man. So-so in his own end. Maybe not so pronounced as Ristolainen, but still. And on a team with effective defensive D, an elite PP QB was a useful weapon!
  2. Its a good post Sid! He's a good athlete, a good talent. The reason he was a lottery pick. Has the balance, speed, puck skills etc. Its well within possibilities that he learns to play NHL D. I'd rather bet on him learning to play D? Than a fringe player who does not have edgework, or skating to believe he could handle incoming forwards. The pressure of making correct decisions when trying to clear the zone. He was -9 on one of the worst teams in the league in 2016/17 before they signed Housley. 3 years ago, those defensive problems did not seem as bad. I'm very curious how he will do with a new coach. A new system. If it was him, or the coach & surrounding talent? I suspect it is a bit of both. And of course it would have been ideal if he had developed this part of his game already! Is there still time? They say 26 and 27 is the peak years of most defenceman. Tanev at 24 was just becoming a regular, coming off a 69 game career high games played season. His first ''full'' season in the NHL. Risto's current age.
  3. I'm more concerned about Rafferty being someone we can inject? If required... Biega is fine as a 8th D man. Plays ok, and plays hard, when called upon. We could do worse. I'd be disappointed, like at the end of last season, when he was pressed to perform regularly in our top 6. But grew worse when he went top 4. That was the price of having Gudbrandson traded. Having signed Myers inbetween? I'm ok with that. But, as you say, defenceman do get injured. Another poster mentioned Hughes and Benn can crossover, play right side. I'm rarely a fan of guys on their off side. The same will be said of Tryamkin when he comes (?). My big concern, is if Rafferty is capable of replacing Tanev next year? Or if Woo will be ready... I see Rafferty as a money puck gamble. Bartkowski & Larsen illustrate how that backfires on D. A smart move, if it were available, would be to trade Tanev to a contender for a young RHD.
  4. Ha! Why would Ferland sign with Calgary? They traded his ass. And from what I hear, told him he would not be worth what he was going to ask in free agency before he left. Calgary fans, management anyway, did well trading him too! Got a young speedy forward as a long term asset. Who scored 78 points. Everybody seems to love the feist in Ferlands game. As do I. But I would also trade Ferland to Calgary for Lindholm. Hypothetically only. In the snap of a finger! But I am still very happy how it turned out.
  5. Their last GM in Edmonton, unfortunately, made lots of stupid moves. Their new GM Holland had a long history of biting the bullet on bad contracts & cap issues. Instead of panicking. Franzen is still on Detroits books, even if on IR.. Same Zetterburg. And when he moved Datsyuk's cap penalty (O'35 contract, no actual dollars due)? He moved down a couple of spots, 14 to 17 by memory, in the draft. Did not cough up Dylan Larkin.
  6. That may, be the case. But it also may have been waived in full. I have not seen the reporting. Calgary can say to Edmonton, we accept the trade, subject to being able to ask him to fully waive his NMC. Or waive it for this trade and expansion, but retain for all other means. And if Lucuc agree's, its possible. Who knows how bad he wanted out.
  7. Of course we would have taken that? Pool party is a lottery pick calibre talent. When we had the cap space. The talking heads also thought we should have got Miller and a 1st from Tampa, because ''they were in cap trouble?'' Not pay a first because he was a good player. Teams have options, direct & indirect.
  8. My understanding is different. That they have the right to authorise or veto any move. In the case of an NMC, of any kind. ie reject a buyout, wish to be paid in full. Reject a demotion to the minors, even if being paid. And like an NTC, reject or authorise a trade. Clearly Lucic waived in some form or another, because he's moving. The team taking him on at that point can say we'll take Looch (or whomever) if they agree to waive to come to Calgary? They may also ask to pre-agree that the player waives his NMC. or waives hi NMC for the purpose of expansion protection. In some cases the clause is even written where once the clause is waived, it is no longer valid. Its all about the terms agreed.
  9. He had to waive his NMC to move to Calgary, no? Part and parcel may have been agreeing he would accept being exposed to expansion. I've lived in Edmonton. Its very drab. Summer never gets above 20 or 21 degree's. Winter come 4 or 5 weeks earlier than other Canadian cities. Because it is further North. And leaves 4 or 5 weeks later. Seattle anyday, Looch on reflection says no problem! Anyday!!!
  10. Who honestly thought they would pay Puljujarvi to move Looch's contract? Lets trade Virtanen to move Eriksson? Not going to happen...
  11. Oh, super pumped to have Martin on board. Big, fast and skilled D. Projects as a two way or defensive D? But blocked shots & hits count in this league. Martin is just 19.Played his first SHL game in 2015/16 FOUR seasons ago, https://www.eliteprospects.com/player/274991/martin-fehervary Has already played in 3 WJC's and two WC's against NHL and Euro all stars. And looked good. I have Alexeyev as real life Wash's most exciting D prospect, Johansen as most likely the next guy to break in. But Martin is great competition, could jump over them? We think he'll be a regular by the end of this year or early next.
  12. Oh, oh. Here comes Florida again. Can we transfer Inane to the Metropol this year? They're looking a little weak...
  13. Yes, gained one though. Pionk. Not a good net outcome. But kept Byfuglien & Morrisey. Most important lefty & most important righty. Short term anyway. There window is much more positive if Buff stays healthy. Obviously, they would have preferred Trouba (younger, would have been long term best righty). But have to deal with cards dealt.
  14. I applaud this hire. Nice to see an East Coast guy out here as well. Can help sell the game, and what the Pacific Northwest has to offer... Seattle and Vancouver are such nice cities. World class places to live, burp Tacoma, but yeah as a whole!
  15. Does this mean @Rob_Zepp moves allegiances south with Francis?
  16. Misquoted myself. We're better in goal. They are better as whole, notably the defence.
  17. I'm not sure who you are responding to? I was never a strip down, scorched earth, play the kids at all costs advocate. Trade Tanev, get rid of Sutter, Complain because Vanek was signed, OMG'z, we signed Roussel, the kids are all gunna get waived, etc. Never! Draft and develop yes, but play them when they earn a spot. Your chatter boxing at me is off base. You should take the trouble to pay attention to content when you are responding. I have always supportive of chances to improve where possible. Give or take two / three years ago? I became heavily against spending futures. Open to all other avenues. Up to and including trading for Miller. But I conceded, in this and other threads, that considering the other moves, the Miller trade can work out. Go wink at somebody else please.
  18. A lot more pieces are suddenly in place. So everyone is excited! For the first time in years. It is fun to be a Vancouver fan at the moment!
  19. You bet! The Window is about our best players; Brock Boeser, Bo Horvat, Quinn Hughes (?), Elias Pettersson,, then Markstrom and Edler. So there is some question as to how long Edler and Markstrom can be at the top of their game? Demko is a candidate, and so too is Juolevi (fingers crossed). And Markstrom has only, at 29, just ascended to the development where he has been a true number one? So Demko & Juolevi, whether they can jump in when Edler & Markstrom decline? May determine if our window is extended. Some have noted, or questioned if we may need a 2knd premium D? If the D core has enough even now? Pitt, for example, won a cup with truly less capacity on D than St Louis this year. Their team still had the IT factor! But it is a question. If Elias is truly a superstar as he appears is possible? It could be enough. If we make the play off's this year? I can see us repeating, like Calgary with Hamilton & Hamonic, us with JT Miller, the formula of trading draft picks or futures. This time specifically for a core D man. Or in summer 2020 we could clear cap (Roussel, Eriksson, Sutter) and sign Tyson Barrie? It is a question, but there are potential answers. The supporting cast; JT Miller, Jake Virtanen, I suppose he could join our core players, Tyler Myers, Chris Tanev, Adam Gaudette, Michael Ferland, Troy Stecher, Tanner Perason, Antoine Roussel. They can determine if a core good enough to win? Does in fact do it. They need to have the speed and physicality, enough depth, including the will to win, to smother other teams. Still perform when, inevitably, one or two fall off due to injury. I like our current supporting cast! But teams like Chicago and Boston, even LA, proved you can win more than one cup with interchanging worker bee's!
  20. I have Jake as most likely candidate to play 2RW this year beside Bo. Could be Ferland on the other side, for a wrecking ball 2knd line.
  21. Not for Honka, we may pick him up free on waivers. I do like Honka though. I made a thread proposing Goldobin.
  22. Hey, true story, I met Nick Paul a few weeks ago. Great puck handler and a big body. We want him to shoot the puck more, and with authority. Believe he can make the jump to the NHL if he does this. Good depth for our AHL team at the moment. And Ian Cole a few years ago. Both made their way to Australia for a series of summer (winter) charity games. We acquired Ian near the deadline last year. Looking for him to add stability and depth to our line up. Well now that you mention it? Hey, BTW, does @ Squeak get to stay with us in GML? Still in charge of ELC's? I have some work for you, if so. We have acquired by trade a pivot who will score more than, yes, Brassard. Big shoes to fill!
  23. If I could have signed Ferland & Myers, not traded a 1st for Miller? At the tags they signed for... i would have been thrilled! ill still take it. My nerves about trading for Miller were eased considerably knowing it was for an improved team.
