CDC Fantasy League 2018-19 [PM Nail if interested]
Canuck Surfer replied to Nail's topic in Fantasy Hockey
Wish I could afford that... -
Here are our egg's up front; Lockwood*, Madden, Gaudette, Motte, Gadjovich, Lind (not complaining, I always liked Hague, day 1), Podkolzin, Hoglander, Goldobin, Keppen, Manukyan (I loved this pick), Karlsson, maybe Palmu will still surface. Hopefully enough surface we can trade for D. Not quite as much investment there. Egg's on D; Brisbois, Juolevi, Rathbone, Utunen, Woo, Tryamkin. I'm not that high on Rafferty, Teves or Sautner. I want to like Sautner? Could be convinced.
-
Hoglander and Podkolzin candidates. I drafted Pod in two fantasy leagues. I like him as a prospect! Some have speculated there will be a chance to bring him in next year, not two years from now.

When I compare Calgary? Horvat, IMO > Monahan. Less dynamic, but a more important piece. I believe Pettersson will be every bit as dynamic, and much better in non scoring factors as Gaudreau. Calgray may have snuck a guy as good as Boeser, in Lindholm. Slightly less dynamic in terms of goal scoring, but adds speed. We appear deeper up front than Calgary. Miller, Roussel, Gaudette, Baer > than Bennett, Backlund is a good piece. Not, definitely not, as deep at D. Tkachuk a piece we cannot counter & their D currently what is separating them IMO. Better in goal? Calgary is better for the time being. If Pettersson can be better than the sum of Tkachuk & Lindholm, a true superstar phenom? Then we will have a crack!

Calgary made some moves 2 years ago, last year. Getting Hamilton. Then Hamonic. Or was it the other way round? Then Hanifin & Lindholm, moving Hamilton & Ferlland. At the expense of first rounders. I was critical of Jim handing out a first to advance our rebuild. Calgary handed out two 1sts, plus two 2knd rounders & Ferland before he expired if I have my math correct? It has them in a position where I believe they are top 3, worst 4 in the West? Like us, they did so when they had the first parts of their rebuild, Monahan & Gaudreau in hand. Maybe we can pull off same? They were also aided by Giordano improving at age 34, 35 & 36? God, it would be great if Edler even stayed as well as he did this year! I believe we are playing with fire, trying to improve this year. But there is a model right in front of us, which says its possible. Not that Calgary has won yet...

I do believe, beyond stealth, they wanted to be somewhat better during the down years. There was / is legitimate criticism of moves to prop up the team. Sutter etc.. I posted, vigorously, angrily, when Sutter was acquired. Not that I disliked Sutter. Or Miller, for that matter. That our D was exceptionally poor in that time frame. Sutter's role not our worst problem. For example, we traded for Sutter, had to move Bieksa to make cap space for him. So I believe Benning when he says he simply wanted support mechanisms for young players. He knew we were going to be in tough, even with the guys we did acquire early, Vrbata etc. I believe our owner wanted those moves. I have sat in board rooms. They always want some form of concerted plan to improve incrementally. At every step on the ladder. I have no doubt, his ability to get hired, and stay not fired, was to present Aqualini an improvement plan. Status quo at the bottom was never an option. The answer IMO gives more credit to Benning than an accidental rebuild. It was, more likely, stealth in regards to his conversations in the board room. More so than with fans, or media. That board room conversation? He earned his job by convincing the board we could improve. Has some draft day wins to save his job, in spite of. It is just the reality, he was never hired to rebuild the team IMO. My own guess, is Benning becomes a partial casualty next year when his contract is due. He ends up with a consultants, or VP job, in semi retirement. Stays involved in scouting. But gets called out for the miscues or inability to compete interim by not getting a full contract to continue as GM. It would not be a bad outcome for all parties involved...

Agreed that Benning made mistakes. Also that he has learned on the job without quoting your whole post. Some of the mistakes are not as bad as grieved on CDC as comatose. Gudbrandson cost us McCann effectively. And we desperately needed some backbone and physicality on our D while we went through down years. Gudbrandson, deficiencies as a defenceman noted, still had a role which helped us. McCann is a middle six winger. Who was replaced by a middle six winger, Pearson. McCann so well thought of, Pitt just traded for Galchenyuk, signed Brandon Tanev so he did not have to be relied on. A tweener, and my point is he came at no great cost, or loss. It would have been ideal, better, or as hoped if Guddy developed and also became a competent D man. Come see, Come saw... Is that where Biech comes in? Analytics guys had written off this player in Florida. Is it his role to identify these probabilities? My understanding is his expertise has more to do with the study prospects. Marrying the various charts of probabilities, with video evidence and research. Efficiencies of watching and analysing prospects with less reliance on flying around the world. And being able to zoom in with great detail to identify fundamental skills, traits to improve, habits. Perhaps Biech will also add this study to pro scouting, a complaint brought up by yourself and @SID.IS.SID.ME.IS.ME . Would Sid have predicted Eriksson's flop coming off a 30 goal season? That Vrbata would be a 30 goal scorer one year, a useless tit the next? I guess my biggest complaint about debate points you have put forward? Is the suggestion of ineptness, that he planned to be substantially better. Its probably fair that it was intended that money puck signings, and trades, might have propped us up higher than they did. Clendenning & Phillip Larsen did not pan out. Baertschi did? But I think Benning knew we were rebuilding long before Linden reluctantly ''admitted'' so, to help ''galvanise'' the fans. We replaced Bieksa with Bartkowski FFS. And Jannik Weber was moved up the depth chart. Nobody in their right mind should have believed that was a play off defence. That we really wanted to win? The next year, as mentioned, we had Megna, Chaput, Skille & Boucher in our line up. It was embarrassing. But, and my key point, Benning fully understood we were in rebuild mode? They just did not admit it publicly. People here in these chat rooms, aren't admitting it either. Perhaps preferring believing to believe the Dim Jim clippings. Sure Eriksson was a mistake. Its, IMO, the only grievous one. And one I would have made. So embarrassing, the next year we went a notch up. Successfully adding Vanek. Not so successfully adding Burmistrov, cough Gagner, Del Zotto, Wiercioch. The reality, as BAD AS ANYONE CAN CLAIM WAS THE PRO SCOUTING behind such moves? Is they were on a budget. Partly still resolving old issues they inherited. Partly just not to sink to scorched earth. But significantly without any real intent to make a play off team of the sordid cast. Anybody who thinks they really intended better is misguided, just my opinion. And then finally, started making moves to improve the team before last year. Now obviously, a concerted effort to rise again this year. The real reason they tried to prop up the team, somewhat, for that period? Rather than go full retard on the rebuild? Or admit the rebuild earlier. Is self evident on CDC. And in ticket sales. Unlike Edmonton, or Toronto, ticket sales plummet in down years in Vancouver. Our city does not support a loser. The last time we were that bad, Burke saved us from the team leaving town. As much as CDC says they wanted to support a rebuild. There just is no evidence. So management lied to us while it went on.

I don't disagree in entirety. Not at all. At what grade of quality? Boston had Krug & Chara, as Chara has slipped with age then McAvoy. St Louis is stronger? Pietrangelo & Dunn the most important, but also Parayko and a strong supporting cast, Edmundson notably. The depth was not expensive in acquisition cost, Gunnarson, Bouwmeister on board a long time. In the short term we have Tanev, Edler & Myers as secondary pieces like St Louis's depth.. In a window of opportunity discussion? Benning probably thought he would strike now. While Edler could be a key piece, Tanev still here. Then does Juolevi surface? Is Brisbois a depth piece. Woo? But I was disappointed we drafted no D this year. I think you need an ongoing supply of possibilities. To find key guys.

Edmonton also wishes in particular draft pick Frederick Allard well. A hard working great member of our AHL squad, we feel his day in the NHL is soon. Jesper Lindgren a wildcard, who could burst on the scene, very talented. Would love to see Allard traded to our real life Canucks. As the Oilers we are enthusiastic about adding Colin Miller. An excellent 5/6 D who has spent plenty of time in the Top 4, can help a power play. We were also ecstatic to be in a position of some prospect depth. To be able to make moves from strength. Still 6 to 8 defensive prospects with a more than reasonable shot at the NHL. Beats 4 years ago when our top D prospect was Jonathon Ismail Diaby. A second thanks Mike!

Thanks Mike. Edmonton regretfully terminates contract of Juuso Ikonen. Signed HV71 of SHL. as per Wilkepedia;

I'm not that impressed with this thread. No, I think the writer was off track. But, as others have mentioned, it was written for a company that owned the Leafs. Not a surprise. I wish our writers in Vancouver were better fans. Not always negative nellies. I don't believe its worth 6 pages of Leaf and Dubas bashing. I hope they make the play off's. They're a Canadian team. I'll cheer for any of them. Canucks first, foremost and above all.

I was against the cost of acquiring Miller. Until we landed Myers and Ferland for less than I thought. Miller is 26. Pearson 26. Markstrom 29, Roussel 29, Ferland 27, Myers 29. They may not get better. But are not on the edge of decline either? Only Edler, Sutter and LOL Eriksson. Over that time, hopefully the older players get made redundant by Jake, Gaudette, Lockwood, DiPietro, Madden,Podkolzin, who can also drive business, Woo, Tryamkin & Juolevi. But the bus will get driven by Horvat, Boeser, Pettersson, Hughes, hopefully Demko & Hoglander when we win a cup. The oldest of whom is Horvat 24. They are our best players. How long we have a Window of Opportunity is up to them! Look at Chicago. They won after Ladd, Byfuglien & others moved on. It was built Keith, Kane & Toews. The key is only that, ultimately Pettersson, Hughes & Boeser land as advertised. That window does not have to be short.

[Signing] Devils re-sign Connor Carrick
Canuck Surfer replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Meh; behind PK Subban, Severson & Vatanen on Jersey's right side. Lots of PMD and not much defence. Looks like Ty Smith and Mirco Mueller will anchor the left hand side behind old warhorse Andy Greene. Butcher in the mix. Only 3 of these 4 get minutes. Their D is exciting, but has significant questions. -
-
Too skinny. Needs development time?
-
As I am sure you would, please send us a reminder note when starting. Will all the available players be in the ''players'' tab in Fantrax, similar to during the season? Cheers MM
-
Thanks Mike. We traded for Derrick 2 years ago. He's helped us bridge our rebuild time. We still think he has potential to be a long term NHL'er. So a new contract was deserved. And we try to offer all Oiler players respect & opportunity. Its also competition. Our young D have to knock a guy who has NHL experience off the roster to earn a job.

Lets be honest; he would have killed me! It would not have been that easy. I miss him here...

Sportsnet caught up with Edmonton GM Canuck Surfer. Whom reporter old news said was a bit surly. What's the matter Surfer he was asked? "Nothing really!'' We're hard at work digging ourselves out of a hole of our own creation. We made a huge trade, to bring in NHL great Patrick Kane at the deadline. And had a second straight year we moved one or two bodies for draft picks. What did that do for your team CS? ''Look, it was designed to, and did signal that we wanted to move on from our rebuilding phase.''''And we think we are ready?'' > We have three recent 1st round pick forwards who have made their debut, are still with us? > We have three more 1st round pick forwards in our prospect pool. > As many as EIGHT 1st or 2knd round calibre defence prospects. > Some prospect depth at every position. > And a top 3 in the world goaltending prospect Igor Shestyorkin. > Plus just launched all world D man Rasmus Dahlin, one of our forwards is blue chip Alex Turcotte. If we add that to Patrick Kane, I'm pretty sure we wonly need tweaks to our core moving forward? So whats the problem? ''Waiting...'' They are all not ready yet! Its a kick in the guts having to be patient, wanting to be better faster. So we are going to grit our teeth. Even if it hurts. Where does that leave you GM? Honestly? We hoped to improve more. We have cap space. And again, honestly, we have had a good summer. A great draft. We also have achieved the most important UFA goals we had. Our D pool is deep, but not ready. We scored a great prospect Jesper Sellgren. Who like Nicholas Hague, might be ready? We have saved space where they can join our roster. And gratefully, even if it was expensive, landed two solid veterans bringing back Ian Cole, and signing Matt Niskanen. They can anchor the D till the rest arrive. Jesper or Nicholas will play early, until Ian arrives from injury in December. Up front we missed out on at least one big name target forward. Who might have jump started our rebuild. Left money on the table, our offer was legit said Surfer? But I suppose its not surprising the top free agent forward talent did not see us, yet, as their primary target. We had some holes, might or might not have been a strong paly off team, yet... That said, we were pumped, to attract some mature age rookie forwards; Joakim Nygard, and we're in agreement with a second winger Jakob Lilja, we feel, like Joakim, will add middle 6 speed and scoring to our roster? This gives us guys who can play with Lias Andersson & Henrik Borgstrom. Adds talent to our team without having to make trades. Even if we did not, you never do, get all your targets? Its great to get guys who might help your core. They, along with Jesper, young talent were our #1 target. Are you done? NO! We still have our feet in on another top rookie UFA. And a core veteran forward, prima aged, with plenty left in the tank! There is at least one, to two forward spots still on our roster. Hopefully from the top end? After we see where that goes, we may look at a veteran signing or trade. At the moment we're deep, but maybe don't have top talent to play with PK. But not everyone signs on, there are lots of good teams, opportunities. Any big news? 3 teams sent us offers on Rasmus Dahlin. One over the top! Wow, you'll move Rasmus? I really don't think so. But you always listen. the reporters Ears buzzing, Surfer said thanks and excused himself.

[Rumor] Boeser Camp Eyeing 4 Year Deal Worth $28M
Canuck Surfer replied to buddyguy's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Meh, same, same. Gets $10 mill or becomes UFA early. Or gets long term deal he wants. Seems like leverage? I could be splitting hairs. -
[Rumor] Boeser Camp Eyeing 4 Year Deal Worth $28M
Canuck Surfer replied to buddyguy's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
I did have that math. Not perfect. Mucked it up on 10% required over last year. But pretty close... -
Fly like an Eagle? As good an album as I have ever bought? I was too young for the 70's. Saw him in high school during the 80's. He put on a ridiculous show, woke up the neighbours as the opening act for Bryan Adam's in Osoyoos early in the 90's. Wow, what a weekend that was. Anybody else go to that show? Saw again in the Naughties in Vancouver, and twice since I moved to Australia, once with a cameo by Carlos Santana, accorsing to Steve? The last time they had played together was Woodtock? An all time fave!

Thoughts on how Vancouver stacks up to division rivals
Canuck Surfer replied to aqua59's topic in Canucks Talk
Agree fully with an earlier post > this was an equal parts encouraging, educational & very fun post to read. Great work! It also speaks to how well Green constructed wins from tight games. Constructed wins from games we probably might have been overmatched? Hence experts still not picking us, even with an improved line up. Pluck 'em, I say our odds are pretty good!
