  1. Hockey can't start soon enough.  Watching these guys underachieve is wearing really thin and I've been a fan since 1984.  At least when the Canucks suck we're dramatic about it.  There's something gutless about this version of the Jays:  lots of fun but no backbone.  I thought Keirmayer might provide that and he has a bit, but not enough to cover for Springer and Vladi.  We could use a bit of George Bell or Jose Bautista, not to mention Marcus Semien, in this lineup.  Most of the guys we've got are okay with losing.

Are you suggesting that all national misdeeds be reason enough to keep any country out of international sporting tournaments?

Or is this just strictly whataboutism, while deflecting the illegal Russian invasion of Ukraine and its subsequent genocide and war crimes?

Wanted to make sure it was one or the other for you.

I'm suggesting this move reeks of hypocrisy.  And who the f do you think you are policing every discussion on this board with your hysterical russophobia?

JT's  had 5 (good, solid) hits in a handful of his last games.

Saw (well, mostly heard the aftermath) one that really helped them...Vegas was about to enter our end and he smashed McNabb. It resulted in the puck being turned around and headed their way. They'd been all over us and that helped things shift a bit.

He plays a really hard, physical game and when someone's being mugged he's right in there, ready to go. We SO needed that kind of leadership (especially now with Schenn gone). A total team player who also can put them on his back when needed. He does it all.

Yes, I noticed that too, both on McNabb and in the more general improvement in his game since Tocchet took over.  J.T. is a force and when he plays a physical game it sets his skill free.  Same with Ovi and MacKinnon, and yeah, he can be that good.  He absolutely has taken over some of Schenn's protection role and that's rubbing off on the whole team.  I like where this is going.  Back when J.T. first got here it was clear that he was the team's emotional leader.  A few ups and downs since then but we're seeing it again.  Players like J.T. don't grow on trees and Tocchet is the perfect coach for him.

Apparently there was an offer from pittsburgh ( i think before tdl)

Pittsburgh offer was picks only for Miller, Allvin countered requesting a C to replace Miller.  Hextall refused and went and acquired Bonino and Granlund ( I'd be pissed if I was Crosby or Gino)

the C the canucks would have targetted by their criteria. under 25 could use a change of scenery.

Samuel Poulin & Filip Hallander plus a pick or two? I'd rather wait for a better deal.

edit* i dont mean both of Hallander and Poulin

I'm not sure who to believe about that rumoured offer, Allvin or our lying media.  Whatever the case, that is an example of the kind of offer management isn't going to accept, rightly so imho.  They aren't desperate to move Miller, who probably still has 4 good years left in him that overlap with Petey and Hughes.  If they could get a near-equivalent younger player plus other assets in a deal they'd probably consider it but who's offering that?

Because they need cap space, they need more depth and they need players in a lower age bracket.  A miller trade will accomplish all of that.

This team still needs a lot of work and you're not going to get it done by trading players teams don't want

I wouldn't be against it on principle but the return would have to be better than what we got for Bo.  Since we're playing our way out of the top C prospects in this year's draft, the return would probably have to include a prospect who could take over at 2C.  That wouldn't be an easy deal to make.  The team definitely needs a lot of work but it also has some great core pieces, of whom Miller is one.  Subtracting him in addition to Bo is probably a deeper reset than management has in mind, but it all depends on what they could get.  I agree that he's not untouchable like Petey and Hughes, but the last year plus suggests that they'd be looking to win any deal for him and that he wouldn't be a cap dump.

You could be quite right. He has the attitude in the dressing room, we saw that in the bubble and many other times. When you have a Miller, a Pettersson and a Hughes,

you have a tremendous leadership core. All three will speak their mind for the good of the team. And to straighten out reporters that don't no, you know....

Sadly, the PR people got their hooks into Petey and the alien death stare is no longer, but it was great while it lasted. Him and J.T. tag teaming the local media would have been a wonder to behold.

Honestly...I wouldn't bet on JT not going negative emotionally on occasion. And that's ok. We don't need passive acceptance that says "it's ok, everything's fine". Sometimes that raw emotion is necessary and wakes people up. We have a coach who's working them hard and that's obvious in how JT plays. What people viewed as "lazy" was sometimes just being gassed and, at other times yes, emotion where he got caught up in it momentarily and it got the better of him. He'd usually come out the next with fire.

But it's not indifference or not caring and that matters. A guy who cares too much is a much better alternative.

Yeah, he probably still would sometimes but it's all about channeling it with him.  He's way too hard on himself at times.  His fire is a major asset when he handles it right and he's a very smart guy who can learn to do that.  I think Tocchet gets J.T. and will help him there.

I have a strong feeling that, baring a surprise trade and the draft, JT will be the next captain. That frees Petey up to just do what he does best, dominate. Plus, when was the last time a non-north american captain won the cup? I don't know, I'm just asking.

I'd be good with this and think it would get the best out of J.T. putting him in a position where he can't go negative emotionally.

  9. We will get Bedard, eventually, in free agency.  In the mean time, I'm excited to see what this core can do.  If we make another couple of good trades and sign another good free agent D out of college, the supporting pieces could be right there.  If we keep getting better, we'll be in a position to win.  If being bad was the key to winning, we'd long since have become a dynasty.

Plus....the Kings had a chance to be first in the conference....you don't think they were trying for that? I do.

Their play didn't say "mailing it in" to me.

It was about as far from "mailing it in" as you can get.  That was serious up-tempo hockey that had us back on our heels for most of the game.  If we could combine that kind of play driving with the skill we've got, we'd be a contender.

The Kings really impressed me tonight.  Our top line was virtually invisible for the first two periods.  Would like to see Gavrikov here though.

Yeah, I was keeping an eye on Gavrikov too.  Definitely as advertized on the physical play but pretty steady on the rest too.  Would change the equation on our back end for sure, if we can afford him.

  12. So about that game ... they absolutely schooled us on pressuring the puck and driving play.  It was every bit as bad as the shot ratio suggests.  But we have Demko and can finish, which means that we can sometimes win a game we weren't even in.  That was the bubble playoff formula, and we really need to get beyond it.  I'd be happy about the win if we deserved it, but tonight was the worst of both worlds.

There are a lot of Selke winners that don't get into the HOF.  There are actually very few captains of Cup winning teams over the last 50 years that haven't or won't.

I think we might have different standards for jersey retirement.  I have Smyl above Bure and Naslund in terms of deserving that.  I have Bure and Naslund above Smyl for the HOF.

You're right about the difference between captains of cup winning teams and Selke winners.  In the last 20 years, Brown and Brind'Amour are the only cup-winning captains I can think of that aren't in or likely to be in the Hall (we'll see about Pietrangelo).  Brown clearly shouldn't be but Brind'Amour's case is a lot stronger than Toews', at least on numbers and longevity.  He also won a couple of Selkes.  Selke winners who were cup winners but not captains include Kopitar and Datsyuk, both clearly superior players to Toews imho.  It will be interesting to see which of them makes the Hall and which doesn't.

He's a hall of famer.  Selke Trophy winner and playoff MVP and led his team to three Cups.  With many more goals and points than Carbonneau or Gainey while playing in a lower scoring era.  That said he wouldn't quite be a first ballot guy for me but he will be one unless they penalize him for the Beach stuff.

He was never a top 100 player of all time though.  The NHL already has egg on its face for picking Toews for the top 100 and leaving out Dale Hawerchuk, among others.

Carboneau and Gainey shouldn't be in either, but you're right to point to them as the precedents that will probably be used.  Dale Hawerchuck was twice the player Toews was. When Federko made the HoF twenty years ago, lots of people thought it was a stretch including me, but at least he had the numbers to make it semi-plausible.  Putting Toews in the Hall of Fame would be like us retiring Smyl's number:  a massive over-valuation of "intangibles" in a better than average but not great player.  And I liked Smyl a lot.  Lots of Selke winners and captains of cup-winning teams don't make the HoF.  I'll be the first to admit that I hated that version of the Blackhawks but would have no problem with putting Kane in the HoF despite him being as miserable a person as Toews.  It's about the talent, or lack thereof.
