[Rumour] J.T. Miller Trade/Contract Talks
Maniwaki Canuck replied to Podzilla's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Fiala: the ultimate milk hotdog. -
So nobody wanted to pay full value for Miller at the deadline. It's not surprising that it was hard to do this kind of deal then. He's not your normal rental for a contender, not a good complementary piece but a core piece and top player in the league. You don't get that for futures and most contenders aren't going to radically remake their team at the deadline. The draft and free agency were always more likely times to move him. With that said, I still think our chances of winning any trade that ships him out are negligible. You don't win a cup by losing value when dealing your top players. We need to keep winning transactions lower down our lineup and clearing cap to get good players that other teams can't afford to keep. Like we did with Miller. Despite his agent's "show me the money" routine, I still think there's at least some chance Miller will re-sign here. Not at a discount, but hopefully not at a premium either. This is the place where he became the player he is. This is the team he's pushed up from the bottom of the league. J.T.'s from the rust belt and loyalty seems like a part of who he is. He also seems like a pretty strong family man and probably a lot will depend on how the city is working out for them.

They were pretty awful: glaring unforced errors. It happens to everyone and I'm not saying he's no good, but there needs to be a lot of steady play to compensate for that sort of stuff.
-
Not easy and not always necessary. When you look at the kind of record Florida put together this year with a D corps that drops off steeply after Ekblad and Weegar, it becomes pretty clear that "good enough" and finding the right fit can go a long way. Closer to home, we've seen the same thing with Schenn and Burroughs, and Dermott could be that too. I'd be okay with moving one of our better wingers for a good young RD if that deal's available but it's not the end of the world if it's not. We still manage to play .650 hockey under Bruce despite what is supposed to be a terrible blueline.
-
Absolutely. All we need to do is re-sign Miller and make 2-3 more good low-leverage trades like we just did with Hamonic and Dermott. Just keep our skill and get incrementally better and more cap efficient at the lower end of our roster. No to rigid ideas about when our window will open or an obsessive focus on getting younger. We already have a great young core that we can supplement with vets like Schenn and Richardson.

Big post-Hamonic bounce! Seriously, though, that was a great 60 minute effort. Halak was amazing, Petey in Selke form, and lots of killer instinct on display. Love that we dominated play in the last 3 minutes when you'd expect a push from them. Whatever happens from here, you gotta love this team's moxy.

[PGT] Buffalo Sabres at Vancouver Canucks | Mar. 20, 2022

Coulda taken this one but we were jinxed by the psuedo-indigenous "ohhh-oh-oh-oh-oh" chant. Seriously, since when are we the Atlanta Braves? I couldn't f'n believe it. -
For sure. How many times does he take the puck off the point and speed behind the opposition's net only to make an intercepted pass to someone in the slot or covering for him on the point. It starts out looking good but ends in tragedy every time. This is not a guy you want to have distributing the puck.
-
Mostly agree with you, especially about the need for a more mobile D. But on that matter, Poolman is actually okay, passable for second pairing. It's his puck handling and passing that are questionable for that kind of deployment. He was actually looking pretty good before he got hurt and seemed to benefit from the high flip breakout option that Bruce introduced. So I think we can get by with him in a middle pairing role until a better option comes along. Clearing cap is where that starts, for sure.
-
Hamonic was mostly good for us when he was in the lineup and came at a bargain last year. I like his toughness and he can still skate well enough to play the modern game, so good mix of old- and new-school. But with Schenn and Burroughs giving us 3rd pairing quality at a bargain price on the right side and Poolman about to return, I'm more than okay with moving on. The return is fair and probably would have been lower at any other time of year, considering that Schmidt went for a 3rd twice within consecutive offseasons. So this is good. Best wishes to Hamonic for the rest of his career and thanks for helping out here.

Not a good game for us: run and gun is not our thing. By the third we sort of got the forecheck going, but that needed to happen from the beginning. It's almost like we looked at their goals against record and decided to open it up and trade chances rather than play our game. Defensive zone exits were a problem again, like under Green. OEL does look hurt or worn down. But if you can't score, you're not going to win. We had our chances ...
-
Our first 3 shifts in the first period were good and we were starting to establish our forecheck. Then they pushed back really hard and we couldn't match them until the second half of the period. So it's not like they were asleep at the beginning, just that they couldn't respond to a very strong push from Tampa. It happens. Then Vasilevsky and the refs took over. We got Demkoed.

[Rumour] J.T. Miller Trade/Contract Talks
Maniwaki Canuck replied to Podzilla's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
It's not the speculation that's gotten stale, but the loud, passionate certainty with no real information to back it up. If I recall in your case, that would be the certainty that he'll be dealt if we fall out of the playoff race before the deadline. Doesn't look like we will, so it's an easy opinion to have. -

We pretty much know by heart the talking points on all sides of this issue. Seems like nobody's made an original observation in this thread during this calendar year. Just down to who yells longest and loudest, or most convincingly (to themselves) claims to read Miller's or management's minds. As if our arguments based on incomplete information were going to make something happen. -
Gotta agree with that. Management knows what they've got in him and aren't going to bite on the lowball offers they're getting, and could get again at this time next year. Why not enjoy one of the best players in the league in the mean time, and see if we go on a run that might make him want to stay?
