  1. Actually I'm not that pessimistic, just thinking about how to handle the worst-case scenario. As for our fan-base, media, and previous goalie gong-shows, let's just say that there might be better sells than those. How about the Sedins and an emerging young core whose good years will start to kick in as Demko joins the club? For the record, I absolutely want this kid signed asap. He looks to be one of (if not the) best goalie prospects out there. A tandem of him and Markstrom could easily be as good as Luongo-Schneider were. Let's hope we handle it better this time!
  2. I'm thinking that if Demko won't sign with us, Benning could just cut to the chase and ask him for a list of teams he'd favour once he hits free agency and start an auction among them. It might not recuperate his full value but ought to get us back more than the high second we spent to get him. Of course it's better if he signs with us but after the Vessey situation, teams have to be thinking about how to avoid the situation Nashville's in.
  3. Baertschi with a very nice goal in the 1st, his 14th. What are the odds he hits 20 this year? At the pace he's been on since New Year's, it's definitely possible.
  4. Yeah, I think that impression came from the World Juniors. I agree that he does look fast enough in college, but against elite junior competition on the bigger ice surface it was a different story, and maybe an indication of what he'll be up against in the NHL. We'll see but even if he does have an issue there, I don't doubt he can improve. Look at how much better Horvat and Gaunce got on their skates. I'm not worried.
  5. I'll go with that progression! The consistency thing is major, often a missing piece in otherwise good young players. If he's already got that, he may just walk right on in 2017. Let's hope the organization finds a way to get him out for young stars and some unsigned, unpaid, non-professional instruction over the summer! A little bit more power in his stride, a bit more flash in his edge-work and he'll be finding those same scoring areas at a higher level of competition.
  6. That comparison has crossed my mind too. He's got something of that same "pure scorer" mystique about him. As I recall, Bossy wasn't all that fast either, just had incredible hands and release, knew where to be, and had some pretty good linemates feeding him the puck too. To do the same today, you'd need to be faster but I'm sure Boesser can manage that with a bit of work. This guy is looking like the steal of his draft class atm.
  7. I certainly agree but was specifically addressing McHortanen's hopes that Demko could force his way onto the big club next year. By suggesting that it this is very unlikely, my point leads to yours. Your suggestion about Niemi coming back in a deal with Dallas is one scenario, Reimer from San Jose another, and undoubtedly there are more. I still think Benning rides it out with Miller until midnight of June 30, 2017 though. He just likes the guy too much.
  8. All those years (I think it was 3) that Schneider was in Winnipeg, he did get short call-ups to the big club and played a few games. Got hammered a few times and did well others but it clearly showed him what the next level was and how to prepare for it. That kind of developmental plan for Demko would make lots of sense. If he turns out to be another Patrick Roy and forces our hand early, so much the better. But I can't see them moving Miller any sooner than next year's trade deadline, and even then the odds are that Benning just plays out the string with him. Demko would have to be a total beast in Utica to make Miller redundant in JB's eyes. I'd love for it to happen but won't be holding my breath.
  9. I'd put greater odds on Hitlery doing that, but agree that both of them are compelling reasons to tune out and watch the Canucks as much as possible in the mean time.
  10. Okay, that changes things.
  11. He's waiver-eligible, no? Not sure he'd clear.
  12. ^^^ Gaunce? It's easy to miss a log in the log jam.
  13. Just about right. Could end up being very club-friendly but still puts him above vets like Hansen and in the top half of the forwards.
  14. Thanks, we can cross another thing off the list then.
  15. It's major if Tryamkin can play the right side effectively. Best news for our D I've heard in a while.
  16. Yeah, I have, and was just about to respond to one in another thread! There still might be an original minor thought or two in mine though. Cheers JR.
  17. Actually Edler for Hamonic would solve a lot of problems. If Hutton-Hamonic was the first pairing, they would complement each other pretty well. As a second or shut-down pairing, Sbisa-Tanev might work, especially if Tanev can work his stabilizing magic and let Sbisa be the physical guy. A third pairing of Pedan-Larsen would be pretty inexperienced, but at least their skill sets add up to a decent whole. Alternatively Biega on the right side would add a bit more nastiness and experience, not to mention familiarity with Pedan from Utica. This is not a world-beating lineup, but it's a lot more balanced than what we've got now. Note that I'm leaving Hamhuis and Tryamkin out of the picture but probably one of them will be here. If they land Tryamkin, Hamhuis may be off to greener pastures but if not, he could well be back. We have such a log-jam at LD, though, that finding a place for Hammer means letting some of the younger guys go. I really don't want to see Pedan exposed to waivers.
  18. Nearly 8 years later, this thread is finally making a bit more sense. It's hard not to love Burrows for all he's given and I'd be totally fine with him playing out the remaining year on his contract. But if he doesn't go, someone else like Hansen probably has to. I get the sell high narrative on Hansen and it wouldn't be the worst thing. From a mentoring point of view though, though, Hansen is a better option because he can still bring it instead of just saying it. So it wouldn't shock me if Burr is bought out this summer to save the waiver-eligible guys like Grenier. I say this with no relish: that would be a sad day, but one that is coming one way or another.
  19. That would be just too awesome. We wouldn't even recognize our D with those 3 in the lineup.
  20. Is he even eligible, or would it be the same situation as Virtanen and McCann this year?
  21. If he is in the mix for the Canucks next year, all the more reason to convert some young forward depth into D prospects. At this point, I'm assuming Benning is just waiting for the right opportunity.
  22. I doubt they'll be putting up the numbers to get 6 million dollar deals, but Benning has been willing to pay for perceived potential in some contracts, so your concern could be valid. If they do all outperform, that's a good problem to have and we can deal one or two if necessary.
  23. I was a doubter myself until recently but the impressive thing for me is how he's learned to read the game and make good decisions with and without the puck. Kinda blows that "low hockey IQ" narrative from a year or so ago out of the water. Clearly he's plenty smart enough but is also getting good coaching and the right kind of experience.
