My guess is Jim has a had a call or two on Schmidt (or called a few teams about a player and they were interested in Schmidt as the return), so he asked for his limited NTC list so he can actually investigate his options. I would expect this happens with a lot of players every offseason and doesn't mean the team is "looking to move" him. I would be surprised if they're actively "shopping" him. But it's still good to see what is available and what it would cost around the league. All that to say: I would be surprised if the chatter about a Schmidt trade is a complete fabrication- rather, I think it might be a bit of an embelishment or an asumption based on half of the story. Who knows though, this is just one fan's guess.

Elias Pettersson | Quinn Hughes - Contract Discussion Thread

What do you mean "taking so long"? The offseason didn't even start until today. We haven't had the draft, the expansion draft, or free agency. Getting these done before the end of the month would be fast. -
Ahh, thanks for the clarification

It's going to take a lot more than a 7th to ship him to Dallas. Toronto had to pay a 1st to get rid of Marleau- and that was before the flat cap. (Same cap hit and term)

Elias Pettersson | Quinn Hughes - Contract Discussion Thread

Article 16 of the Canada-US tax treaty is helpful for the re-signing of Boeser, Hughes, and Miller, at least. Signing bonuses paid by a Canadian team to a US resident are taxed at a flat 15% (see the bonus structure of Matthews' contract). Loading up their contracts with signing bonuses can be a significant tax advantage with cross-boarder players. Unfortunately, it won't help with our Canadian or European players. -
Neither. Schmidt and Myers are decent 2nd pair D men, Schmidt (debatably) can be a #2 Dman on a team with good structure and defensive support from the forwards. As we introduce Rathbone, Joulevi, Woo, etc into full time duties, we're going to want some skilled experience to pair them with.

[Signing] Avalanche re-sign Jayson Megna

I don't have any hate for Jason, like you said he's a decent depth player. And obviously I don't hate him as a person, I don't know the guy. I did have hate that our team was so bad that we had to use him as a 1st line forward. -
[Signing] Sharks sign Jonathan Dahlen
MattJVD replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Huh, I didn't think he'd bother coming back to North America. He had a good thing going in Timra, thought he'd stay with them after they got promoted up to the SHL. -
He played 23 out of 37 games before, and 0 out of 19 after. That said, I agree that it's unlikely he's a top 4 guy out of camp. Maybe he can get there by the end of the year.

Jim said on the radio that OJ lost 10-15 lbs when he got sick. He couldn't get his strength and energy level back to where it needed to be before the end of the season. That's why he wasn't playing

What is the main position target the canucks need
MattJVD replied to Bertuzzipunch's topic in Canucks Talk
So a unicorn? There are less than 5 players like that in the league. If you went with 26 and under (instead of under 25) and 'solid top pair' (instead of 'bonafide #1') D, there might be 15 -
Elias Pettersson | Quinn Hughes - Contract Discussion Thread

Yeah, I listened to the whole interview. Barry said the team couldn't do BOTH Petey and Hughes to long term deals with the cap that they have. Looking at a bridge deal for Pettersson for sure and Hughes might be a long term deal. -
what did we gain by not re-signing any of Markstrom/Tanev/Toffoli?
MattJVD replied to grouse747's topic in Canucks Talk
Virtanen was coming off a 18 goal, 36 point season, is younger, and is faster than Toffoli. In hindsight, yeah it would have been better to move Jake and keep Toffoli, but it's dangerous to pass on the young guy who has improved every single year for a 29 year old. Toffoli is older now than Sutter was when we re-signed him. -
I remember it the way King Heffy does too.

I'll never cheer for Toronto, Calgary, or Edmonton. While I would have preferred Winnipeg, I guess I can half-heartedly support Montreal as we watch them get run over by the Avs or Knights
-
That remains to be seen. At least there is a full training camp and pre-season this year to try him out in different spots in the top 9.
-
No, Schmidt is not on the move

No team in the League has a consistant 60 point pace Captain as a 3C. Bo is a prototypical 2C, good offensive player with defensive chops. As @tas said above, he's closer to a 1C than a 3C. We used to have the same discussions about Kesler and it was wild then too. A 70 point, (one time) 40 goal scoring Selke winner- and people wanted to call him a 3C.
-
Yeah, I was imagining him playing 3RW and earning some PP2 time later in the year. Depends on who we can get to centre that 3rd line I suppose
-
I think he'll clean up some garbage infront of the net to add to his goal totals. And I'm not that confident he'll get linemates who can actually finish (for the first half of the year at least) to rack up the assist.

Yep, I'd be happy with a 15g 15a, 30 point (over 82 games) season from Podz. I just want to see high-effort Hoglander-style play
