If Pearson's still out, Bailey as the 13th forward could be a smart choice, since he's played in all situations before and could be a savvy fill-in anywhere.

Pearson is already a winger too many and it looks like he is healthy.

It would be a big turnaround for the team if we could draft and develop some quality players.

I think the new management has made massive strides. Invested a tonne in player development (Sedins, Higgins, Komisarek) and added essentially an entire draft+ worth of prospects for Abby (Raty, Johansson,  Hirose, Bains, Sasson, McWard, Tolopilo, Nielsen)

That's why I'm not keen on dumping on him, some of how things went was simply beyond his control, injuries stalled his development

Canuck luck at work, could have happened if we'd drafted anyone else

I HATED the pick at the time - I thought Tkachuk was going 3rd, and I would have been ok with Dubois but I had Sergachev and Chychrun as the two guys I really wanted. The clips and reports I read/saw on Juolevi didn’t get me too excited and he seemed like a guy who got way overrated from the WJC who had a powerhouse team and also he had some insane talent in London. That said I expected him to at least be an average player. Sergachev and Chychrun both seemed to have far higher ceilings, unique elements, and had their stocks actually drop because of the WJC which IMO gets waaaaay too much credit. To me I saw Juolevi as a guy that would have gone late 1st round on average teams.

Virtanen I pegged as a physical 15 type, like a Raffi Torres. I didn’t think his upside was very high. But we still had a hangover from the Bruins series and there was a hate toward the Mason Raymond type players. I thought a 15 goal Virtanen would be a lot more popular in Vancouver than a 50 point Ehlers or Nylander. That said Ehlers was BPA, Nylander had top line center potential, and as big power forward types go I thought Ritchie had much more upside. He was a bust as well though.

With better offensive brain and shot accuracy :metal:

Hansen had 22 goals in 67 games one year and a couple of 16 goal years as well - that is pretty good. Averaged around 15 per 82 games. Offensively Arshdeep is a little behind Hansen at this age (his big season he turned 21 already).

I think he scores less than Hansen but maybe a bit better play maker. Like 10 goals, 15 assists, PKer bottom 6 kinda guy but Hansen is his ceiling

He's only half a year older than Podkolzin (they're both still 22) and just put up 38P in 66 games in his first AHL season for 0.57 P/G. Compared to Podz 18P in 28 games for 0.64 P/GP I'd say he has a pretty decent chance of getting NHL games as soon as this year.

Bains is an awesome PKer too. Also scored two short handed goals on the same shift. Very tenacious, good play maker - I think he has Jannik Hansen upside

Surprised he could only get a PTO after going to the finals with the Panthers.

Had an average season but looks to be a decent fourth liner and is only 26. What gives?

He was a reclamation project when signed by the Panthers. 15 points in 68 games, now 26, not a penalty killer. Safe to say he didn’t get reclaimed

  6. He left as much of an impact as Jimmy Vesey, Travis Boyd, and Nic Dowd who funny enough all had decent careers post  Canucks.

The narrative around Nic Dowd in Washington was how he was seen as an upgrade on Jay Beagle when we replaced Dowd ($800k) for Beagle ($3M).

Boyd had 17 goals and 35 points in 74 games the season after leaving Vancouver. Insane how badly these big bottom six contracts hurt us when guys making around league minimum ended up being far more effective.

Dakota Joshua is a great example of how Allvin went out and found an untapped guy for cheap and developed him into a very strong bottom six player.

If Benning got a cheap guy he expected the world from him right away and tossed them aside so fast.

Unfortunately it is kind of stuck because of previous bad decisions.

The OEL buyout was inevitable and unavoidable.  It should never have happened, but it was the result of not waiting a year for the last set of bad contracts to expire.

The offseason after the great bubble playoff run, if they believed in the team and wanted to make a push... THAT was the year to exit those bad contracts and use that money to retain guys like Toffoli, Tanev, and extend their young stars to max term deals.  Weirdly, that was the one year Benning in his entire tenure where he said outright "We have no interest in moving more high picks or prospects, they are too important for building a team."  The team had really good buzz around the league, picked as the next Canadian team to win the Cup, and interviews from lots of players saying until they got a chance to watch them in the bubble, they had no idea how good they were.  Of course, with the key cap casualties from that roster, the team went into a spiral the next year.

Which if course is obviously the time to pull the trigger on the OEL trade... because that is what you do when your team is bad and you don't have a plan aside from trying to keep your job next year.  Using the high picks to make it happen as well, that were off the table the year before when they could have really helped.

All that churn was the time that wasted early Petterson and Hughes years when they were on cheap ELCs, and cost us the future with them locked up to long term deals.

From the outside it just looks like we have to see how this season goes because to keep this basic roster in place we are capped out going forward for the next few years with giving out raises.  If the team is bad again, that is really bleak.

That was when Benning went from a mediocre GM to perhaps the worst of the modern era and the worst in team history.

He finally put together a solid team - Quinn Hughes had a great partner and we found the best linemate for EP to date in a Toffoli.

Instead of re-signing them he goes off and gets Schmidt who was a terrible fit (left handed OFD forced to play a right side shut down role), signed Holtby who was already terrible at that point for 2 x 4.3M (Delia and Martin between the two of them were better than Holtby) and then bringing Virtanen back after he was our worst player during the run yet had some trade value coming off of a decent season.

If he just brought back Tanev & Toffoli and perhaps moved Virtanen for a backup goalie I think we would have made the playoffs again the following year.

Then Benning doubles down on the stupidity making the worst trade in franchise history that is going to hamper us for the next decade - we were almost free and clear of his precocious eras as well.

The whole blaming Gillis thing doesn’t excuse Benning’s compete repeated stupidity with awful signings. Allvin sure is a breath of fresh air - he actually seems competent.

Dzingel was a good player at one point - 26 goal season. Wrist surgery seemed to kill his shot.

I think Schneider wants to retire or play in Switzerland but I could see him entertaining a PTO as a short term NHL backup and perhaps retiring if he gets sent down. Ryan Murray could be an interesting option as well since the bottom pairing left side is a bit open.

    I'd bring in

Gemel Smith. Great special teams PK/PP guy with wheels to keep up and ride shotty with some skilled guys, Right shot C went PPG and the AHL not an enforcer but willing to drop em.

ZAR The guy hits n PK's decent bottom 6.

Aaron Dell we seriously need a backup.

Derek Brassard He still moves pretty well 50% in the dot great 4th line guy put up 13g last year. Money on the PP.

Alex Edler lets try to get him another contract around the league. If there isn't one out there at least he retires a Canuck.

Cory Schneider has found his game in the AHL. Might be cool to see him up and get a few starts so Silovs can develop and Martin can regain confidence

  10. We have the best centre and defenseman in the history of the franchise. A point per game power forward. A winger with 39 goals - there have been only 15 40 goal seasons in franchise history. Demko is a top 5 goalie in franchise history and top 10 in the league. We have a gem in Silovs who we can call up now.

We acquired a defenseman who finished 5th in WAR.

Our PK was a disaster and we acquired 6 strong PKers (Suter, Blueger, Hronek, Cole, Soucy, Irwin).

Barring any major injuries this is a 100 point team.

  11. We basically paid the same for Hronek as we did OEL if you think swapping 9 for 17, a 4th and a 7th was worth Garland which seems about right.

We paid an astronomical sum to move Eriksson, Beagle, and Roussel for one season. As overpriced as they were those guys plus Sutter killed penalties which was a huge issue that following year.

Really? Good for him. Always felt he was good enough for a regular spot.

He put up some very strong defensive metrics with lowest number of offensive zone starts in the entire league. Also on pace for 10 goals his last season. One of the few guys in the Canucks that year to keep his head above water (most guys were bleeding chances on the ice).

One of our better 4th liners - I think he could have been developed into a very good 4th line player like Jay Beagle in his prime but Green didn’t like how his game wasn’t “high tempo”. 3 points, 6 hits, +3 and 67% in the circle over his last 3 game call up and never saw another game. Very strange.

Funny to think Benning heard OEL wanted to live in Vancouver, and assumed it was because he thought we had a good team…

He wanted to come here to retire.

I never really hated the idea of bringing in OEL, but we should have been able to leverage the fact that he wanted to come here specifically. More retention, no 1st round pick; that would have been a completely different story.

If you take out the picks & Garland in this deal it’s still a win for Arizona but I could have stomached/forgiven the risk of the deal. The fact we gave up a top 10 pick, a 2nd, 7th, and also Garland’s salary has really hindered this franchise

Would loooove to see Edler back, he should retire a Canuck

I thought about Edler but I’d much rather have Wolanin round out the bottom pair - loved what he showed, great skater.

For goaltending I think Silovs needs the action and perhaps Martin needs to regain confidence. Starting the year with Schneider playing back to backs and the occasional start. Could also be a great mentor for Silovs and Demko

Management has done a fantastic job building up depth at nearly all positions. So for most of the interesting names on this list, there isn’t a real fit.

One exception may be goaltending. But if Silovs is better served in the AHL and Martin isn’t up to it, there will be some good backup options on the waiver wire next month…better than almost anyone on this list (who might be conceivably interested). One exception could be Halak, who is still a good backup, but not sure if there are bad feelings from either side from the last stint he had in Van.

The only other position I’d want a bit more depth at is RD, especially if we end up trading Myers. But we already have a potential option lined up in Ethan Bear. And he won’t be signing anything - especially a PTO - until he’s fully rehabbed from his injury. He has no reason to push/rush it either, as he is collecting insurance based on his previous salary, which was much higher than what he’ll get this year. But when he is ready, he’ll be better than any of the other RDs listed here.

Funny enough one guy who has found his game in the AHL is Cory Schneider after years of many missing games, injuries, and poor performances.

Last year he was 19-11 with a .913 save pct. in the AHL. Not out of these world numbers but the other goalie was 15-16 with a .892 save pct.

The season before he went 14-11 with a .921 save pct. The other goalie was 16-15 with an .896.

If he is healthy and has fixed his game regardless of whether he is in the NHL or AHL he will be a backup. Could be cool to bring him back and finish up his career in Vancouver. Ironically he last played for the Islanders so it would be like trading Horvat for Schneider again haha.

Your post makes no sense. A player, like Miller, who produces at a ppg, plays 2C, and is big, physical, smart, high compete, a leader, and very hard to play against is worth more than 8 per. Miller is on a team friendly contract. Hopefully Petey extends for a team friendly cap allocation too.
Allvin is a friggin’ genius! He is leading a management group that is fantastic. Very similar to the great Gillis group. We will be at the top of the league.

This. The whole Miller got $8M for a 99 point season narrative is false. Johansen got 8 million and his best season was 71 points. Hertl also career high 71 points and $8.14M.

For 99 points and the intangibles you mentioned Miller would have gotten around 11. 8 million for 82 points is still relatively good value. I just hope he can average over 60 per season over the length of the contract.

Hahahaha always a 2nd rounder in the mix. blah

I know! How on earth did Arizona negotiate that. “Well we are giving you one of the worst contracts in the league and a player who will only agree to go to two markets… can you throw in a 2nd as well? Oh and before you go might as well give us a 7th”

If we moved Miller for a top 10

Pick, 2nd, & 7th I’d be over the moon and he is infinitely better than OEL

The Gilbert Brule development arc? Why does Laf remind me of that player?

Brule got injured and had pretty severe mental health issues. Brule actually reminds me a lot of Jared McCann but McCann persevered.

Jack Hughes’ first two seasons weren’t too different than Lafreniere’s but he broke out in his third season.

I think Lafreniere maybe isn’t a good fit in terms of deployment, linemate, icetime, systems etc. Perhaps rushed when he wasn’t ready. Neely was actually very similar in terms of production with Vancouver and exploded the first year after a trade - I think a change of scenery would be a win win but the fear of looking bad trading him too early likely lingers as well.

Lafreniere for Byfield or Dach would make sense

  19. The difference between OEL and Loui Eriksson is OEL was already terrible when we traded for him - he actually far exceeded expectations his first season here and it wasn’t his choice to sign that contract in Vancouver. Eriksson on the other hand went from being a very good player and scoring 30 goals to playing like absolute garbage after signing and struggling to score even half getting prime minutes with the Sedins and on the power play.

I was in the camp of keeping OEL and seeing how he did with Hronek but I understand the buyout

Trading OEL for Roussel, Beagle and Eriksson by itself would have still been a win for Arizona and a risk that would have made sense for the Canucks even if it failed. Perhaps a comparable albeit still worse version of the David Booth trade.

But giving up a top 10 pick, a 2nd, 7th and now being saddled with Garland’s bad contract is unacceptable.

  20. He was brought into Detroit as a “2nd line centre” and disappointed with that expectation, but he seems to be a capable 3rd line centre and Blueger a very good 4th line centre.

I see 0.5 points per game as sort or the floor for a 2nd line center and Suter was close to that in his first two seasons. If he can play at that level and Aman takes a step forward, Blueger moves to 3C the team looks a lot better with Miller on the first line wing
