I was thinking the new management team was doing a pretty good job until this trade. HORRIBLE. This is going to end up being one of the worst Canucks trades in modern history. Detroit fans are in full celebration in Twitter saying how badly Yzerman fleeced us and thanking Allvin. They were doing so well, why?????? UGHHH

The 2020 offseason was low key an absolute disaster. Benning had actually kind of turned things around - the Miller trade worked out, Toffoli played better than expected, and the team was able to get far further in the playoffs than anyone had imagined. We finally had some of the right pieces in place. Toffoli to that point was the best linemate EP had, and Tanev was a great fit with Hughes (as well as a mentor our our younger players). When Benning decided to let Toffoli & Tanev walk to trade for Schmidt, re-sign Virtanen instead of trading him while his value was at its highest, and pay 3.6M per year for two years to sign Holtby he completey undid all of his positive moves. Cap wise we could have brought Tanev and Toffoli back, who were integral pieces of the team, instead of gambling on three guys who hadn't proved anything to the Canucks. It was awful management at the time, and dreadful in hindsight. I believe if we kept Tanev and Toffoli we would have been a playoff team and we could have easily kept both players ($8.75M for both - Schmidt/Virt/Holtby were $12 million). Toffoli ended up getting flipped by Montreal for a 1st, 5th, and prospect. Tanev has been one of the best stay at home dmen. We got 7 wins out of Holtby and combined 10 goals from Virtanen and Schmidt. Holtby and Virtanen ended up being buyouts that are still on our cap. Losing Markstrom for nothing was hard. I was on the boat of trading Demko if we could get something good for him like a young player, prospect, + pick. In the end this just shows how Benning somehow achieved horrific cap management while trading picks and still icing a terrible team. Say what you want about the current management team but so far they feel infinitely more competent.

No. Top end potential is Mikheyev, if he moves to centre likely 4th line.

My theory is that they sat down with Luke and said they want to bring him back next year and asked which team he would want to go to. it makes a tonne of sense he would pick Toronto - winning a cup with the Leafs would mean way more for Schenn than Boston/New York/Carolina given it’s the team who drafted him If Vancouver approached Toronto and said nothing less than a 3rd this makes a lot of sense. I have a hard time thinking he would have only fetched a third when shopped around

Very unpopular player in Toronto. Was already disliked but when Toronto protected him over McCann it boiled into anger. I don’t see Liljegren or Sandin coming back. Perhaps Topi Niemela? Therre were rumours of Niemela being a player of interest and he had a major down year. Would be ready to come over next season

Both Krav and Baertschi were in their draft +5 seasons when we acquired them. Baer 4 points in 15 games and a small offensive player and Benning gave up a 2nd. Lockwood is already 24 with 1 point and -12 and a 2026 7th is nothing. Krav has size and defensive upside as well. Shows how much more competent Allvin is over Benning

(Rumour) 4 teams interested in J.T. Miller
canucklehead44 replied to combover's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
22 games into 2023 and Miller has 24 points. I predict he will finish the season at a point per game or higher. I don't think he will pass Horvat by the end of the year but if he does I wouldn't be that surprised. -
I agree - Woo doesn’t seem like the type of guy who will be a top 4 but I could see him being a Burroughs-type of reliable #7 if his defensive play is solid and he can play physical. Burroughs had 12 points in 69 AHL games before playing a steady role in Van.

Lol Gillis and Benning had nothing to do with who was drafted in the 5th round. Have you seen the size of scouting teams? Outside of high picks (like Juolevi and Virtanen) the GM leaves it up to the scouting staff. Benning did however trade those great picks away - he actually got angry at the scouting staff for selecting McCann over Pastrnak

[Signing] Tyler Myers to Vancouver
canucklehead44 replied to Rush17's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Eriksson is still a lot worse. Myers has had a few bright spots and has been relied upon at times, not with a tonne of success, but has been a “top four” in Vancouver. When Myers becomes a free agent he will likely still be in the league, albeit for a lot less money. Eriksson was gifted top line and power play and was hopelessly bad. His first game he scored on his own net and never got better. During our run he only played 10 games with zero points. to play devils advocate - one thing about Eriksson is other than eat cap he didn’t particularly hurt the team. He was low event, killed penalties. I think Myers cost is more games -

[Proposal] Potential Schenn trades
canucklehead44 replied to Coconuts's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
By pick 25 the success rate is essentially a moot point from then to the second round. the 38 and 55 pick have had more success than the 27th. One weird anomaly is the 15th overall pick being almost cursed. Unfortunately I think we also fell into that last year -
Benning had much better drafts/players available around where he was picking. If you look at “next three picks” here are the players each GM missed out on. Benning had a a few more hits but also way worse misses. Other than Shinkaruk over Theodore most the players are pretty meh during the Gillis drafts. The biggest hit for Benning was EP all things considered but apparently he wanted Glass and the scouts pushed for EP. GILLIS Myers Schultz Johansson Orlov Eakin Rakell Skjei Severson Theodore BENNING Nylander Ehlers Pastrnak Konecny Tkachuk Keller Adam Fox Hague Romanov Boldy

[Rumour] Canucks Getting Calls on Luke Schenn
canucklehead44 replied to Warhippy's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
I think just have the convo with him and if he has a few teams he wants to go to and try and win a cup we make a trade. I think any team in a playoff spot would pay something to add Schenn -
[Report] Vitali Kravtsov requests trade
canucklehead44 replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Already 23, 10 career points and a winger who doesn’t kill penalties no thanks. maybe for someone like Studnicka, Joshua, Stillman, Burroughs, Lazar, Dermott -
Hughes fits in the window and has been fantastic - he is a player we can build around. There are only a small number of players like him that come around every decade and trading him for 3 pieces, even solid ones, will be a negative return. If Rathbone was already putting up 30-40 points this deal might make sense but as of right now he is a highly valuable cornerstone to this team that cannot be replaced

[Speculation] Canucks exploring Tyler Myers trade
canucklehead44 replied to brian42's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Keep Myers and trade him at the next deadline with 50% retained for a 3rd & 7th round pick -
3rd for Dermott wasn't a bad trade, I wish we just let Brock's contract end since we could have traded him at the TDL. Based on their moves I'd probably give them an 8/10 but it sure doesn't reflect with on ice play.

[Rumour] Canucks Getting Calls on Luke Schenn
canucklehead44 replied to Warhippy's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
I'd be over the moon with a 2nd round pick for Luke Schenn. Expecting any more is a setup for disappointment
