[Signing] Rangers re-sign Jimmy Vesey
canucklehead44 replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
There were only two Sheldon's who are active and played in the NHL and they were 1 & 2 on our AHL team in scoring last year -
[Waivers] Casey Fitzgerald, Jake Leschyshyn

To be fair Gaunce lead the league in defensive zone starts and finished his career in Vancouver with 5 goals over 40 games which is around a 10 goal pace (solid metric for a 4th liner) and also an even rating and solid underlying status on a team that was absolutely bleeding. (The Sedins were -21 and -22, Sam Gagner -18, Reid Boucher a -12 in 20 games). It was dumb to try and get him to play as a winger instead of a defensive centre. Gaunce was a good player who was so horribly developed. It is a shame because I think he could have carved out a solid NHL career. He did make the Jackets lineup over Jack Roslovic for a game so I guess that is a positive. -

[Rumour] Bo Horvat Trade/Contract Talks
canucklehead44 replied to HOFsedins's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
I think we have options of moving Bo without taken a bad contract back. I would do Kotkaniemi for Miller if it means we can re-sign Horvat or Kuz. Kotkaniemi is on pace for 14 goals 28 points vs 30 goals 70 points for JT and with the Canes top of their division and deep at centre (Necas/Aho/Jarvis) I could see them making a deal like this. Also have some pricy contracts coming off the books next year. -

[Rumour] Bo Horvat Trade/Contract Talks
canucklehead44 replied to HOFsedins's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Crazy fact - not only does Horvat lead the league in shooting percentage (24.4%) but no active player in the NHL today has ever finished a season with as high of a shooting percentage as Horvat is at this year. Over the last 25 years, only two players (Mike Ribeiro and Sergei Kostitsyn) have shot higher. Ribeiro scored 27 goals, followed it up with 22, and then 8 seasons in a row with sub 20 goal seasons. Kostitsyn only scored 20 more goals his entire career after that 23 goal campaign. This goal scoring pace is unsustainable. I do think Horvat has improved and I would consider him a 30-35 goal guy moving forward. One similar example is Kesler was a "25 goal guy" and at a similar age (26) popped in 41 at a 15.77% (compared to career 11.3%) and then reverted back to being a 25ish goal guy again. I like Bo - he is good for 30 goals and 60 points and would like him back if the price tag was under 7 million but this season is going to shoot him up to 8+ million. He is not nearly as good defensively as his reputation insists and he doesn't really make his linemates better (Garland and Miller in the bottom half of the league for 5 on 5 productivity but effective on the Power Play). Including this season and including the prior two Horvat is a 0.8 PPG player (65 points). Miller was a 1.07 point per game player in the three years leading up to his contract signing - if you put things into perspective. It looks bad now but there is a lot of recency bias at play. With that said Bo's value should be fantastic at the deadline given he is a center, wins faceoffs, is 4th in the league in goals and has an affordable cap hit. I definitely think we should trade Bo and keep Kuz. -
[Proposal] Kuzmenko to Washington
canucklehead44 replied to 86Viking's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
I'd be happy moving Miller even if it was for a cheaper salary straight across like Fabbri or Ryan Strome but I think we would get a pick back as well. -
It is a 2/3 buyout. So we essentially save 5.66 million in cap over 3 years and are paying 11.33 in buyout cost. So if we signed Horvat to 7 years that is essentially adding 1.61 million to his number. So that would put him close to 10 million. On top of that we have to find a more productive player than Garland for 1.88 million which likely isn't happening. VERY stupid, short-sighted, shooting ourselves in the foot kind of deal given Garland is still a productive player. It makes much more send to move Myers or Pearson at 50% retained or even buying out Pearson instead at least we aren't saddled with a massive buyout cost for years. We got 2.75 million in JT costs coming up and 2.4 in buyout cap coming off. If we trade Bo and buyout Pearson that gives us 7.3 million to sign Kuzmenko and maybe a small raise to Bear & Schenn. Even if we don't move Myers his 6M comes off the books when we go to re-sign EP

This is a trade I think makes a lot of sense: To Vancouver Nemeth To Arizona Myers 4th round pick Pay Myers his 5 million dollar bonus then he costs $1M in actual dollars. Nemeth is owed $3.5 million in actual dollars at a $2.5 million cap hit. Even throw in a pick as a sweetener. Arizona also gets a more valuable player they can likely move for a 3rd at the deadline if they retain half his cap. OR you can throw in a 3rd team. To Vancouver Nemeth To Arizona 4th round pick Van 5th round pick (third team) 50% retained on Myers Cap To Third Team Myers I think there might be a team out there willing to add Myers at 3 million for a 3rd round pick. This is cheaper than a buyout or retaining on Myers for Vancouver. Arizona saves quite a bit of hard cash moving out Nemeth and gets two picks. Vancouver saves $3.5M in cap space. Although I think it makes more sense for Arizona to keep him till the deadline since he is costing them the same as a replacement level player and will get a higher return.

(Proposal) Trades for the Future
canucklehead44 replied to DudePerfect's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
I've thought about some potential deals given the current environment. Here are a few that come to mind; I think Detroit might be a good fit for Boeser. 5 points out of a playoff spot but two games in hand. Injures to Zadina, Bertuzzi, and Fabbri - could use another forward up front. Have the cap space and some kinda bad contracts coming off next year. To Vancouver Zadina To Detrot Boeser Zadina has struggled so far in his career with only 25 goals in 169 points. That said he is a couple years younger and under contract for $1.8 million. Given the cap savings and youth a worthwhile gamble for two players who need a change of scenery. To Boston Bo Horvat Luke Schenn To Vancouver Brandon Carlo 1st round pick Brett Harrison/Mason Lorei Mike Reilly/Tomas Nosek Carlo becomes a building block alongside Quinn Hughs on the top pairing and is still young and cost controlled - Schenn going back the other way temporary fills the gap left by Carlo. 1st round pick + Harrison (centre) or Lorei (defense) are quality prospect pieces. Reilly/Nosek cap dumps to offset salaries. A LOT of talk around Boston interest in Horvat - could step in to replace Bergeron for the future. Moving Carlo and Reilly opens up some long term cap space. To Carolina JT Miller To Vancouver Teuvo Teravainen 2nd round pick Joey Keane Teravainen is struggling this year with 3 goals and 13 points in 27 games. JT Miller can fit under their cap long-term with Staal (and Teravainen) coming off the books. We clear up long-term cap and get some light futures. To New York Kuzmenko To Vancouver Lafreniere A lot of Laffy rumours - but NY has no cap space and no bad contracts to send back. Vesey is currently on their first line - I am sure the Rags would salivate having Kuzmenko and Panarin together - and it works from a cap perspective. I'd prefer to keep Kuzmenko if we can but if we can't move salary there is no way we can afford him. Not saying all these trades would happen but ones I can see would make sense for both teams. -
I think it was $850K but agreed - should have signed him to a one-year deal. The issue is management is stuck with a team that is kind of in a compete window when you look at what was inherited. Benning on the other hand was given the perfect opportunity to focus on a rebuild and just signed terrible overpriced UFAs. He is scoring at a 61 point pace - that isn't awful, usually its good to get 10 points per million with free agent signings. If he gets worse it is bad, if he continues it is not good, but if he turns around this contract is fine. I think we just keep him at this stage - sell high on Bo. Boeser was a better player than Bo only a season and a half ago - i'd much rather get a small ransom for Bo vs sign him for 8 million and have him revert back to being a 60 point player as well. Garland is performing at an even worse point per $ ratio and many people on here justified the Guenther pick for Garland. Bo is in a slump - he went through a lot - now is not the time to trade him. If he doesn't turn it around and the cap increases and we can clear him then I think it makes sense to wait.

[Rumour] Canucks Getting Calls on Luke Schenn
canucklehead44 replied to Warhippy's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
2/4 next games are against Calgary and Colorado. These are pivotal 4 point games. If we lose them I think our playoff hopes are pretty much sunk. If we win we gain valuable ground and are in the hunt -
[Rumour] Canucks Getting Calls on Luke Schenn
canucklehead44 replied to Warhippy's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
We can trade Schenn and re-sign him in the offseason. Give him a chance at another cup and bring him back. His value is high right now too. +5 on a bad team, 10 points, playing over 17 minutes per game, physical vet with a dirt cheap salary, leading the league in hits by a fairly wide margin at 159 - the next best defenseman has 110. That is enormous. Also being a righty - he would be an excellent addition to any team making a run. -
When the team finally came together and we didn't re-sign Markstrom or Tanev it was a big question mark. We could have traded Demko for a top 4 dman. Perhaps we wouldn't have made the horrific OEL trade if that was the case. Benning put us in such a bad position cap wise, while emptying the cupboards in the process for a non-playoff team. Its not like a situation where we were at the end of a run either - this team was bad the entire time (the bubble playoff was fun but we would have likely missed the playoffs if Covid never happened)
-
It wasn't a bad trade at the time, but saying the second trade was bad when we paid a 3rd to acquire him wasn't really on this management group. They did not properly evaluate the player plus he had an injury. The current management group has done a phenomenal job finding players who have fit well - Kuzmenko, Mikheyev, Joshua, Bear, Dermott (based on last year) - and acquired them for very little in assets and cap. Heck even Lane Pederson was an awesome add-on. Our defence has been poor but I think a lot of of our woes fall on Thatcher Demko. Even adjusted for our bad defense he has been one of the worst goaltenders in the league. For a guy that was supposed to be a core franchise goaltender that is not acceptable. Delia and Martin are AHL calibre goalies. Martin came into this season with 9 NHL games at 27 years old. He had only 1 season with over 40 games played in the AHL and two seasons with a save percentage above .910 - essentially he was a 1B career AHL goaltender. And yet, he and Delia have a combined 13-5-1 record. I have a hard time believing if the same Demko from last year showed up he couldn't have gone .500 so far this year. With Demko putting up a .500 record we would be 3rd in the Pacific.

Dickinson was awful last year and had two years remaining. Acquiring him for a 3rd was a Benning blunder. You almost have to look at the two trades as one, because you can't make the Bear trade without the Dickinson Trade: Dickinson 2nd 5th for Bear (25% retained) Stillman Pederson All of a sudden that trade looks pretty good! We dumped a guy who didn't even make the team earning 2.65 for two more years for a second pairing RHD (which is HARD to find) earning $1.6, a young depth dman, and Pederson who lit it up in Abby and has 3 points in 5 games so far. Huge win overall. Even when you take Dickinson cap dump out of the equation, a 2nd for Bear with 25% retained and a 5th for Stillman and Pederson are solid trades.

[Speculation] Severson on the Move?

To be fair wasn’t EP at like 17 points after 33 games last year ? if he has a relative EP turnaround that puts him close to 120 haha -
[Speculation] Severson on the Move?
canucklehead44 replied to AngryElf's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
To NJ Miller Burroughs/Stillman Martin To Van Severson Mukhamadullin Blackwood NJ is a great fit they have tonnes of cap coming off next year and in a compete window. Miller is still a power forward coming off a 99 point season. On pace for 32 goals 75 points. After 33 games I don’t think has killed his value completely (I think we all saw Miller more as a 75-85 point player anyway). Gravy if we can squeeze a 2nd rounder as well -
[Rumour] Bo Horvat Trade/Contract Talks
canucklehead44 replied to HOFsedins's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
I still think Horvat & Schenn for Carlo, 1st, & Lohrei (and perhaps a cap dump like Reilly) would be the kind of deal we should do. We fill a big gap in our lineup with a young, cost controlled roster player, a prospect who is two years away and a pick (4 years away). Cap space, prospects, picks, and cost controlled roster layers are what management need to start building around the core -
Pederson was packaged with Tanti for Quinn who was packaged with Butcher for Ronning/Courtnall/Memesso so at least his trade tree has a happy ending! I think the big difference is that Pederson didn't necessarily have negative value as a Canucks. We couldn't simply trade OEL for 'future considerations' he would cost quite a bit to unload. And with his production and salary I don't think Garland would generate a return anymore either. There is no guarantee Neely would have turned it around - he had three years and came off of his lowest goal output. While this worked out amazing for Boston in hindsight at the time Neely could have been another Jim Sandlak. Also people who say we could have drafted Sakic - he went 15th and that pick was #3. Another Burnaby Boy Chris Joseph went 5th overall. With the OEL trade even if we kept the picks and they ended up being busts we would still have been further ahead not having all of the salary tied up.
-
Pederson alone was traded for a 4th round pick before. Crazy that Carolina also retained salary. The Dickinson trade was annoying but its not like it was particularly bad value. Patrik Nemeth had 2 years / 2.5 per remaining and cost two second round picks to unload. Stillman, while he has kinda sucked, might have had some value as a young physical dman.
-
Being a Toronto draft pick and former top prospect he gets a lot of analysis and it is overwhelmingly positive - both from Toronto writers, league writers and local guys (based on his stint last hear). Also anecdotally from Leafs fans who played hockey at a relatively competitive level. Bottom pairing defenseman fall seem to fall into 3 camps - “this guy sucks” “he plays his role well but will be nothing more than a bottom pairing dman” “he should get a shot at a bigger role”. Dermott falls into the last category. Being in Toronto I’ve heard the hype but I can see from a Canuck fan perspective he isn’t particularly exciting on paper
-
1 year contract though. I don't hate OEL, I think he is a decent player. Right now he is a bit overpaid but lets be honest he holds pretty substantial negative value. Garland right now has no value either. So we traded a top 10 pick and a 2nd round pick (with some awesome RHD available at that spot) for significant negative value and nothing to show for it.
