  1. I agree with you - that said I like paying a guy 1.5 who plays a bottom pair role with potential of being better vs 3 million for a guy who plays his role poorly and has more downside potential like a lot of Benning's signings. Either way I think Dermott is a better player than Hamonic at half the cap hit and has more upside as well. I agree with you - I really want Horvat moved to Boston for Carlo. If we can drop Myers and then bring back Schenn I really like our mix. And Bear has been a great pickup I am happy with him on the second pair. Myers is horrible. Adding Carlo + Dermott back and allowing some of the pairings to gel and I think our D is looking at least average. With our strong forward group and if Demko can play like he did last year this is a good team. I made a proposal to move Myers + pick for Nemeth (1 million salary owed vs 3.5) which opens up space. One guy who is available as a free agent is Dumba. Not the same player he once was, or worth his current salary, but a huge upgrade on Myers and likely could be signed at say 4x4. Hughes Carlo OEL Dumba Dermott Bear Nemeth That top 6 is all of a sudden looking really good.
  2. I think given how Dermott plays, his age, salary, and upside he is one of the better bottom pairing guys in the league. In fact, instead of a lot of the writers saying he is barely NHL quality they were calling for him to play a potential top 4 role. I live in Toronto and a lot of my Leaf fans buddies played at a pretty high level and all had great things to say about Dermott. The consensus was more frustration that he wasn't getting more ice time. A bit like Ballard albeit with a smaller salary (fans still liked Ballard and were more frustrated in AV not playing him more than his performance). Despite Dermott being very solid he is quite aggressive and I think that lead to mistakes that got him in trouble with coaches. https://dailyhive.com/vancouver/travis-dermott-top-four-potential-canucks https://theathletic.com/3222526/2022/04/01/hidden-top-four-potential-how-travis-dermott-has-made-an-immediate-impact-for-the-canucks/
  3. If we were playing well as a team I think a lot of people would be singing OEL's praises. He reminds me a bit of Edler in that sense - not quite good enough to carry a team but can be a #3 guy on a good team. Great to hear Dermott is coming back. Most underrated Canuck IMO. I really think Boston is the best partner if we can move Horvat and Schenn for Carlo + future assets. We would have a cost controlled, still young RHD that is a perfect fit alongside Hughes. We need to get rid of Myers. He is only owed 1 million in salary and he might be a decent deadline pickup for a team next year (3rd or 4th rounder). To Arizona Myers Conditional pick To Vancouver Patrik Nemeth I think Myers would have higher trade value at the deadline and is owed 1 million in salary vs 3.5 million for Nemeth. This saves Arizona 2.5 million in cash and they can probably get a late pick from Vancouver plus another late pick at the deadline, in exchange for cap. Hughes Carlo OEL Bear Dermott Poolman Nemeth/Rathbone/Burroughs etc All of a sudden that D is looking pretty solid!
  4. Team could really use Dermott back, probably our most underrated defenseman. Very strong defensively and moves well.
  5. I read an article from November how OEL was so good last year he raised Myers up and this year Myers is so bad he brought OEL down. Now that they have been split up OEL is playing well https://canucksarmy.com/news/amp/the-oliver-ekman-larsson-tyler-myers-pairing-lynchpin-last-season-actively-hurting-canucks
  6. I am find with one of Frederic or Lysall as well, Carlo is really the big piece. So even if the deal was Carlo Nosek Lysall 1st Reilly 50% retained OR Carlo Frederic 1st Reilly 50% retained If we waive Stillman Nosek should just slide into our cap. Hughes Carlo OEL Bear Reilly Myers Dermott Burroughs That D is starting to shape up. I think we can move Myers in the offseason (1 million in actual dollars paid plus a UFA). Re-sign Burroughs and Dermott (plays both sides). Nosek is a warm body cap dump - might be able to flip him for a late pick at the deadline.
  7. I was going to propose the same deal but including Reilly at 1.5 million retained. That saves Boston another $350k in cap space and we can waive Stillman, upgrade him with Reilly and also lower our cap by close to 1 million which is a win for both teams. Carlo is playing a career low 18 minutes - he will be far more valuable with Hughes on the top pair and Schenn in the short term can more or less fill that hole. Horvat short term is a massive upgrade on Frederic but Frederic gives us a solid young piece that can contribute right away. The futures are great and we are in a better cap situation and the defence gets shored up.
  8. There was also the 2nd round pick - and a bunch of really good RHD were drafting right around our selection as well. Elias Salomonsson a RHD drafted #55 has 3 goals, 5 points in 18 games in the SHL. For a point of comparison Jonathan Lekkerimaki our undersized scoring forward has just 1 goal 5 points in 20 games in the Swe-1 (division below). Christian Kyrou, a RHD drafted #50 overall has 36 points in 27 games in the OHL. And finally, Tristan Luneau a RHD drafted #53 has 33 points in 30 games in the QMJHL along with a 6'2 frame. Guenther is one of the top 10-15 prospects in the NHL, and any one of those RHD would be our #1 prospect in the current pool in a position desperately need. Instead we are stuck with 13 million in un-moveable cap. This is worse than the Neely trade by far.
  9. Stillman + Schenn for Fabbro, 2nd + 3rd round pick Nashville upgrades with Schenn and fills two roster spots for the price of one. We undo Dickinson and essentially add Fabbro for free
  10. I actually suggested we pick up Dysin Mayo last year. Played over 20 minutes per game last season with 70% defensive zone starts. Down to 11 minutes per game this year. Didn't have great results - he actually reminds me a bit of Tucker Poolman (who would have been a great signing at Dysin Mayo money). He killed 197 minutes of penalties last year with an 84% percentile ranking. He hits, blocks shots and a decent clip is still youngish with good size and a BC boy. Just on PK alone and his experience playing bigger minutes I wouldn't even mind moving Stillman and a late pick to clear a bit of cap and bring him in.
  11. Having a great season in Philly - definitely a guy I would have loved to have kept MacEwen 'works his nuts off,' giving Flyers more than just a physical punch N.J. — Zack MacEwen is starting to show he's more than just a fighter at the NHL level.V But if anybody needed a reminder that he can throw 'em when his team needs it, he provided one Tuesday night. With some bad blood still lingering between the Flyers and Islanders from last weekend's matchup, MacEwen and Matt Martin coordinated a fight during warmups at the Wells Fargo Center. It didn't take much. And it didn't take long. The mutual respect and understanding made it happen rather easily. "I just talked to him at the end of warmup, I just looked at him and he said, 'You want one?' And I just said, 'Yeah, let's do it,'" MacEwen said Wednesday after practice. "That was about it, really. Those guys have a lot of respect, they kind of knew what we needed to do that game. It was good on them to oblige and kind of give us one of those." MacEwen and Martin dropped the gloves just seven seconds after the puck dropped. The Islanders' 33-year-old winger is one of the game's most experienced fighters. "He's a veteran guy, he's been in the league for a long time, he plays a tough game," MacEwen said. "He's a pretty tough guy, too. He's definitely up there. "I just kind of wanted to do my part to spark the boys, get the energy going in the building, just start it off and try to set the tone." One second later, Nicolas Deslauriers and Ross Johnston handled business. Then, everything was settled and the game was on between the two clubs. The Flyers, absolutely desperate for a win, got one with a 3-1 decision to snap a 10-game losing streak. While MacEwen answered the bell in the ring, he has also helped the Flyers on the ice with his game. The improvement has been impressive. After not making the club's season-opening roster, clearing waivers and starting the year with AHL affiliate Lehigh Valley, the 26-year-old winger made it back to the Flyers. Ever since, his role has expanded with effort and production. Through 21 games, MacEwen has already matched his goal total of three from last season. With seven points, he's only three away from setting a new career high. Coming into the season, his career high in minutes per game was 9:40. Right now, as the Flyers have dealt with injuries up front, MacEwen is playing 14:32 minutes per game and has earned time on the power play. "Mac, since he's been back here, he's shown that he belongs here," Carter Hart said Wednesday. "He's a big part of this team. He works his nuts off, he's one of the hardest-working guys. You see him on the ice, just how tenacious he is, like he's relentless. "For us, as a team, to be successful, we need that, we need that out of guys. He's done a good job of showing other guys this is the way we need to play, we need to play hard, we need to be hard on the forecheck. And he's getting rewarded." MacEwen's all-out physicality and forecheck are staples of his game. The way his role has grown almost makes you forget he was sent to the Phantoms to start the season. "He got waived through the league when we waived him," head coach John Tortorella said Wednesday. "He was not know thyself, he was not playing the way he should play for what he is. "To his credit, when he went down there, played really well. I think that coaching staff, [Ian Laperriere] and the boys down there, did a terrific job with him, putting him in situations, playing him a ton of minutes. And now he's come up here and I think has just stayed within himself. If he doesn't stay within himself, he can get pretty sloppy pretty quickly. "I think he's done a really good job concentrating on being who he's supposed to be. He has improved, he's been a really good player for us as we've gone along the way here." Last season, his first with the Flyers, MacEwen took on any challenge, fighting Zdeno Chara, Wayne Simmonds and Tom Wilson. He has fought a lot so far in his career. Toughest bout? "Probably Chara because I just was pretty helpless in that fight," he said with a laugh. "He's got the reach, he's a big, strong guy. There wasn't much I could do there." MacEwen is giving the Flyers more offensive punch in Year 2. But don't expect him to step away from a fight because of it. "It's nice to be able to try to contribute a little bit more offensively and have a little bit different role," he said, "but that's something that's never going to leave my game."
  12. https://predlines.com/2022/12/06/nashville-predators-duchene-surge/ Predators writer proposed Fabbro Tolvanen 1st 3rd That would be highway robbery. I'd probably even do Fabbro + Tolvanen + 3rd. That said, I think we would need to retain about 1.8. million to make it fit within their cap, at which case this trade makes more sense.
  13. Ownership is definitely to blame but Benning also spent money on terrible players. Even though the team is a bit of a mess I think JR and Allvin have done a fantastic job with trades and signings with the exception of the Dickinson deal. But even with that one - if we traded a 2nd + Dickinson for Bear with salary retained and then a 5th for Stillman I would have liked those deals so in the big picture they are still ahead.
  14. The Neely trade would have been like us trading Virtanen after his third season plus a first round pick for Tyler Seguin without a salary cap. At the time it looked like a good trade - its just everything went right for Boston. There is no guarantee Neely would have turned it around in Vancouver - his goal totals dipped from 21 to 14 and was a -30, I don't think he would have followed up 3 disappointing seasons with 30+ goals but nobody knows. Also Glen Wesley was a great pick but right after him went McBean, Chris Joseph, and Dave Archibald - again no guarantee. Barry Pederson was also a point per game player for his first two seasons (similar point totals as the year before in Boston) and overall put up ok numbers - he is also in the Geoff Courtnall/Momesso/Ronning trade trade so this trade was more so "great for Boston" than hurting the Canucks. The OEL trade was terrible no matter how you sliced it. Dylan Guenther is a top 15 NHL prospect, and not only that there were three fantastic RHD drafted at a 50, 53, and 55 when we had the 47 pick. Garland is giving us about 3.7M in value right now and OEL maybe 4 million? So even if Guenther is a bust Arizona still wins this trade by a landslide - its just him having an NHL career will be salt in the wound. And this is still early on - it will only get worse. The cost of unloading OEL will be enormous and Garland has playing his way to having zero value as well given his cap hit. We essentially gave up two good prospects for negative value - at least Barry Pederson was worth something. This is the type of trade you make to win the cup or you have an expiring window for your star players - like when the Raptors went all in for Leonard and won the championship, it was a huge cost but worth it. We weren't even a playoff team nor completed our rebuild. Every bad move Gillis made combined is a fraction as bad as this one trade by Benning. It was like a snowballing of terrible decisions.
  15. I was reading some articles out of Minnesota and it sounds like there was a lot of people upset Minnesota didn’t draft Boeser and he would be very popular there. Minnesota is having trouble scoring and their 4th highest scoring winger has just 8 points. Addison has stepped up big time and it sounds like Dumba’s time is up. This is a great hockey trade. Boeser is being a bit undervalued - 65 points per 82 games over his career on pace for 66. Missed games have brought his season totals but that is good offensive performance. From a cap perspective the trade is simple, and we can move out Myers (even if we got to retain some salary).
  16. Minnesota fans seem to love the idea of Dumba for Boeser straight up. This is a win-win If Dumba can get 30+ games alongside Hughes: 1. He is a great fit and we sign him longer term, like 5x5, then move Myers at the deadline (retained) 2. He is a great fit and we move him for a first at the TDL 3. He isn't a great fit, in which case we maybe get a 2nd for him at the TDL and clear a tonne of cap. Minnesota gets much needed secondary scoring (their 4th highest scoring winger has 8 points) and with Addison playing well they are super deep on the right side. Dumba will get an awesome opportunity to play with Hughes or OEL, so its a win for him. Boeser gets to be close to family and establish himself as a potential star in his home town. I think the players and the teams both win. If they could somehow take Myers off of our hands (even at 50% retained) to fill the RHD spot I'd be super happy.
  17. This management group built was was a few games ago the best 5 on 5 line in the league with two signees earning less than a combined 6 million. Added some solid bottom 6 talent in Aman, Lazar, and Joshua without spending over 1 million on each Ethan Bear has been a fantastic addition that cost us very little Dermott was very good last year, sucks he is injured, but essentially trading Hamonic for Dermott was a great shrewd move. Paying a 2nd to move Dickinson sucked, not sure how desperate they were to clear the cap but that is really the only move I hated. And Miller despite having some holes is on pace for 38 goals 82 points - hardly a disaster
  18. I don't think anyone wanted him gone enough to lose a second round pick. I thought he was worth giving a second chance since he was a good player in Dallas, still in his prime, and was put into a weird scenario in Vancouver (and playing with an injury). At the time of the trade I hoped Stillman was actually a good young player but he sucks
  19. It sucks that he is injured but Dermott is definitely worth keeping around. 1. He is still young at 25 2. He is cheap - because of his injuries he probably won't break out this year so a guy like him at 1.5M is a steal 3. Versatile - plays right side, left side, and can adapt to offensive and defensive deployments 4. Potential - his underlying numbers shine, and he also had a good stint last year. A lot of writers and fans thought he should have been given a top 4 role. He seems like the perfect guy to slot in as your #5 and have him move up the lineup. He could develop into a very good player and is worth taking a flyer on. https://dailyhive.com/vancouver/travis-dermott-top-four-potential-canucks I have a very similar sentiment to Ethan Bear! He actually did quite well playing massive minutes and has enormous upside for what we are paying him. These are two guys I want to see stick around for sure and hopefully we don't have to spend big money on washups like OEL and Myers in the future or pick up a 6/7 guy like Poolman for 2.5 million.
  20. I hope Jake wins the battles against his demons and is able to get his life and career back on track and do good in this world.
  21. We should pick up Dakota Mermis so we can have the only two Dakotas. Last year we had the only two Sheldons.
