  1. Jake if he is focused should be a 15-20 goal pace guy like he was over two seasons with us. Given he adds speed and some physicality he would be a great pickup for $750k
  2. My bad I misread it - I guess if they just signed him he probably won’t get traded
  3. Benning overall actually had a fantastic start: He made the playoffs in the first year I was happy with the return he got for Kesler - Bonino actually went on to have a much better career from that point forward and Jared McCann lead his team in both goals and points last season at the age of 25/26 Jake Virtanen was a big miss but getting McCann, Demko, Tryamkin, and Forsling was a great haul Acquired a solid starter (Miller) without losing assets Got a second round pick for dumping Garrison who was on the downside of his contract (I think Garrison was good value his first two years but was declining( Derek Dorsett was a nice hit for only a 3rd round pick This was the year after but also happy he got return for Kevin Bieksa But then the misses came, namely he managed to somehow downgrade and trade away more picks than acquire during a rebuild which is insane. Also he made some very horrific free agent signs that would continue to handcuff the team even to today. I think a lot of the issue is impatience - trading a way guys too soon, not developing players properly in Utica and giving them opportunities in the NHL etc. Brendan Gaunce for instance had actually developed into a very reliable 4th liner and was one of our better bottom six players and even after an impressive call-up (3 points +3 67% FO in 3 games) was not given another chance. One difference I see with the new management is they do seem far more patient and methodical - that was really Benning's downfall.
  4. Not a bad proposal. If the cap space is intended to make the team better via another trade I think it is pretty good. If that cap space isn't going to be properly utilized I think Pearson provides a bit more value at 3.25 than Clutterbuck at 1.75. There is also one less year on Clutterbuck's contract which is probably where most of the value would be.
  5. 1 year at 4 million would have been solid. $1.5 million is a steal !!
  6. Holl on paper looks like a solid 4/5 guy on a decent contract who appears to be a fit for us (two way numbers, second pairing minutes, solid on the PK, right handed shot, at only $2M per year). But Leafs fans hate the guy - he is Toronto's whipping boy.
  7. He is a very good penalty killer - that is about all he brings. Could have used him last year, but still surprised he didn’t sign somewhere for league minimum
  8. And that is after a down year - the previous two season he was on pace for 54 points per 82 games. Over a full season my expectation for Necas would be 50 points
  9. This is true - only 11 players drafted in the second round have played more games than Gadjovich. 9 are at zero games. 6 second rounders you will like get one good player (Demko) one potentially good player who sticks around for a few years but never hits first line/starter/top pairing status (Hoglander/Baer/Raymond), a depth player, a decent call up, and two guys who either play no games or maybe get one call up
  10. 22 points in 77 games and the year before 19 points in 44 games which is a 35 point pace. Nowhere near where he was but not terrible. Dougie Hamilton had only 30 points in 62 games with NJ last season, far off his numbers in previous years, which may say something about their system. Underlying numbers his EV offence is good, PK is decent. For 1.5 million on the bottom pairing with Travis Dermott he would be a good signing. OEL was a relative success last year. I don't see Subban being a top guy but could be a solid middle of the pack guy on our d score.
  11. Crazy I thought he was a very solid 3rd liner/elite 4th liner. Very good defensively, plays centre and wing, and had 15 points in 29 games as a 2nd liner in Arizona last year with a solid 6 points in 14 games with Washington. I guess it didn't come down to money for him - he is definitely not a top 6 guy in the NHL (Arizona was a special case).
  12. I always liked the Hamburgler - very bizarre career. After his amazing run he still had a pretty solid .914 save percentage then only played 7 games over 6 years after. I would have loved to sign him as a veteran AHL goalie to share the net with Dipietro or Silovs. Good insurance policy if Spencer Martin flops
  13. De Haan played on the top pairing at times but also on the bottom pairing. Overall he was Chicago's #4 defenceman. The local beat writer gave him a "C+" and his underlying stats also suggest this as accurate. 4.55 million dollar cap hit last year. Looks like he can play the right side but is a left handed shot. A lot of people are suggesting league minimum, PTO etc but he appears to be at least a fairly sizeable upgrade over Poolman who we signed for 4x2.5. I don't think De Haan is a 4+ million dollar player at this stage due to all of his injury problems. Certainly not a guy who will get term but I can see something like 1 year x 3 million. If we managed to get him under 2 million he would be an absolute bargain.
  14. Using $100K per point as a baseline, in terms of points over 82 games he is at 43, actual 34, and average 26 over 82. This contract is what I would consider fair but at the higher end of his value (IE what he would have signed for likely as a UFA). Mikheyev is a good comp. 4.75M - last year 50 points/82 games, 32 actual, 40 over 82 average. Crouse is younger, bigger, and on the upswing vs Mikheyev in the middle of his prime, a bit older, but better penalty killer.
  15. He had a fantastic second half - I thought he might even develop into a third liner. Not a huge loss but surprised he couldn't stick in the NHL.
  16. GMJB was exciting - I remember he made four big trades over a two day period. His first three trades were good, then 13 out of his next 15 trades were kinda bad (Bieksa for a 2nd was good, and Shinkaruk for Granlund wasn't bad although Granlund was the epitomy of mediocrity). After that his trades were pretty good for the most part but his signings and cap management became abysmal. Regardless, he was certainly not idle handed but he seemed to lack direction. Also he almost avoided developing players like the plague. Our prospects mostly developed in NCAA or Europe and he kept trying to acquire old prospects to jump right into the NHL. Guys that we did develop were let go pretty quick. I think if he just focused on player development instead of knee jerk trades and expensive signings to fill secondary holes he would have been a decent GM.
  17. In Florida I remember hearing about how he looked great in the playoffs and I was expecting at least a Bryan Allen kind of defenceman but he was truly awful in Vancouver. He handled the puck like a grenade, always seemed out of position and no offence to speak of. Luke Schenn has been far better by both the eye test and the underlying metrics: When a guy with 27 goals in 641 career games best attribute is "finishing" that isn't a good sign. He is essentially a #6 guy who can kill penalties and bring a physical presence. Luke Schenn on the other hand has some very tidy numbers since joining Vancouver. Not showing his PK stats from last year but he killed around 2 minutes per game. He is at least solid defensively, albeit not a "shut down guy" but plays his role perfectly bringing phenomenal contract value.
  18. I don’t know how Gudbranson has managed to get so many 3 & 4 million dollar contracts as a bottom pairing dman with horrible metrics
  19. I could see him being a Christoph Schubert type of player. Physical and versatile but not quite good enough to stick in a top six role for a long time
  20. And two guys who we did develop on the farm, Gadjovich and Mac, were waived. At the end of Gillis' tenure when he was putting more of a focus on development I thought buying an AHL team was an enormous positive move and yet the entire Benning era seemed to not take advantage of it at all. I have far more confidence in Allvin and Rutherford. Thats not to say Benning didn't do anything positive - he did make a few good moves, but seemed to completely lack direction and had some of the worst contract management out of any GM.
  21. Third highest point per game amongst our defenseman last season at league minimum in limited minutes.
  22. Popular player in Toronto - guys I know who follow the Leafs say we will love him. Speed, PK, hands of stone, gets a lot of breakaways.
  23. Except Benning would have paid him 3 million per year haha
  24. Yea a lot get moved. Looking at how we drafted it seems the management group wasn't urgent around a 2022 pick vs a 2023 pick (willing to build long term pipeline). The Canucks should be a borderline playoff team so I get that we don't have to move JT unless the return is worthwhile. There might be better offers during the season if someone gets injured or at the TDL - but my concern is he gets injured.
  25. This contract is a good average of his seasons. Brock last year was worth under 5, the Brock the year before was worth well over 7
