The best line Schroeder has played on is with Hansen and Raymond, he did quite well. He isn't going to put up points buried on the 4th line. I think we will run four lines next year and JS will fit well with that model. Sedin Sedin Jensen Higgins Kesler Schroeder * Burrows Santorelli Hansen Booth Matthias Kassian Richardson* Spare: Sestito There is pretty much a guarantee to be one injured player, so Richardson won't be scratched out of the lineup.

[rumor] benning wants reinhart
canucklehead44 replied to GM PLACE ROCKS's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Interesting reports about Tallon being very high on Nylander. I do have a feeling we will get Reinhart. I think Florida is looking for an established dman. Don't think NYI would give up Hamonic to move up 5 spots, don't know if Hickey is a good enough return. Carolina has nothing. Toronto has Phaneuf, but the trade is obviously very complicated. The Canucks on the other hand will have 5 dmen making good money (once Tanev gets his raise). Bieksa/Tanev would be the exact kind of players Florida would want in return. -
He is still young and has flashes of becoming a defensively responsible 35-40 point 2nd/3rd line tweener. Between his injury troubles and being buried on the 4th line for stretches it is too early to give up on him. I think he should at least get a decent look this year. His points per game wasn't too far behind Burrows or Hansen, two players who had ample top 6 opportunities.

I would love to get the 10th pick from Anaheim for Kesler, draft Fleury with the 6th overall and snag a forward with the 10th. We would then get one of Ehlers, Ritchie, Nylander, or Virtanen at 10. All very different players but similar in terms of value/rank (you could also toss Kapanen and Perlini into that mix).

Canucks 2nd rounder 36th overall
canucklehead44 replied to Bobby_Lu1ngo's topic in Prospects / Farm Team
If DeAngelo is still around in the 20s I wouldn't mind trading a 2nd & 3rd to get him. He has the talent of a top 5 pick but lacks the size and has attitude problems. -
Trotz seems like a very smart coach, and you can't ignore the fact he got the Preds to the playoffs 7 times over a stretch of 8 years (missed playoffs by 3 points the one year) despite having one of the lowest salaries. The reason Trotz coached a defensively style was because he really didn't have anyone who could score. Take 2010-2011 for example. A castaway player in Sergei Kostitsyn lead the team in scoring, followed by Erat who has 4 goals in 80 games since leaving Nashville and then Hornqvist, a 23 year old 7th round pick.

Still hoping for a Ritchie/Cornel duo. Those two have great chemistry. Cornel is adept at both centre and wing, has a projectable 6'2 frame, and is dedicated to the defensive/physical side as well. He has great speed and passing ability but is very lanky. After working out hard in the off season he shot up the draft rankings. Seems to have a great attitude and work ethic. Don't see him becoming a top line talent but possibly a solid 2nd line player. Possibly comparable to Matt Cullen? -
Latendresse I think Ritchie is a much more talented player than Latendresse, and Latendresse was decent until he got decimated with injuries. He was the 45th player selected and is ranked 11th in goals for his draft year out of 230 players. Raymond and Hornqvist are the only players select after who have more goals. Again, he was a pretty solid pick in the second round. Would have been considered a bust at the 6th spot but there are a number of reasons he wasn't picked that high. I do see comparisons, and I think Ritchie's high end potential is similar to Rick Nash, low end potential similar to Latendresse. He will probably end up similar to Horton. One HUGE difference between the two, even if all else is equal - foot speed. Ritchie skates well for a big guy and is considered above average - not a speed demon but his skating is one of his strengths. Latendresse's skating was a huge red flag for him even in junior.

ISS/CS Draft Rankings - 2014 NHL Entry Draft

What is with all of the Pyatt comments? During his draft year Pyatt had 45 points less than his team's point leader. Pyatt was considered a guy who can "use his body" but was never really a nasty player. I could possibly see Perlini being a Pyatt but not Ritchie. Also Taylor Pyatt was not a bust. In fact he would be considered a solid pick. His draft year was terrible and he has at least put together a lengthy NHL career. In fact, only one other player picked after Pyatt in the first and second rounds have had more career goals (Havlat). Pyatt is fourth in goals out of the top 60 players picked after the Sedins and Havlat. Most of the other power forward wingers drafted in the top 10 have turned out to valuable top line players (Nash, JVR, Horton, Ladd, Wheeler, Ryan, Voracek). -
I hate the Ritchie / Kassian comparisons. Other than being big, physical players their style of play is quite different. Ritchie plays much more like Rick Nash. One thing I've noticed from both Nash and Ritchie is their ability to hold onto the puck by using their long reach and big body as shield. Puck control is Ritchie's biggest strength imo. If he can develop his playmaking ability he could become a very dominant player. He already has a great shot.

I don't really think this draft is bad. Virtanen had more ES goals than pretty much any 17 year old in the WHL over the past 15 years at least. I compiled a list of forwards from the OHL and WHL weight 200+lbs from the past 10 drafts. There were 20 players in total. Virtanen ranked 2nd in goals (45) behind Evander Kane and Ritchie was tied 3rd with Eric Staal. These guys aren't even expected to go top 5. The top 5 is very solid, sporting four 100ish pt players and a stud dman. The Euro group is weak, but overall this is a solid (albeit unspectacular) draft year.

Top 10 busts since 2000 (forwards only): Alexeev Yakubov Svitov Chistov Taticek Olesz Picard Pouliot (decent player now, but scored only 9 goals in 4 seasons with Minne) Brule Skille Sheppard Hamill Filatov Glennie Some players like Zherdev, Mueller etc at least at some productive seasons, so I didn't put them as busts even though they didn't bring much value to their respective teams. A boat load of defenseman and goalies ended up being busts, but I think there is about a 5% chance we get a dman 6th overall. Not really any pattern in terms of player "type", most forwards picked become at least really good third liners, with most being top 6 players. That said, surprising how many russians picked in the first half of the 2000s became total flops. A lot of so called "safe picks" also ended up as fourth liners like Brule, Skille, Sheppard. There are not a lot of players similar to Ehlers picked, but there are a number similar to Ritchie. Similar to Ehlers: Patrick Kane (this one is a stretch) Similar to Ritchie: JVR Bobby Ryan Nathan Horton Rick Nash Dany Heatley Scott Harnell Nikita Alexeev Not much to go off of. Most players other than Hartnell similar to Ritchie were top 3 picks. Alexeev had nowhere near the production level (5th on his team in scoring) so he is almost a write off as well. Ritchie scored more goals than any of those players in his draft year (Bobby Ryan came the closest at 37 goals). To me Ritchie looks like an incredible pick at 6th and I have a hard time seeing him become a bust.
-
I find it funny that Ehlers is ranked 13th in the final CSS rankings and Perlini is ranked 8th yet nobody on either CDC or HF Boards seems to want Perlini. After watching the highlights from all players I was more impressed with Carter Verhaeghe than Perlini. He has good size and skills but seems like a Jensen-type player. I am surprised he is ranked so high. Ritchie reminds me a lot of Rick Nash in the way he protects the puck. A very different player from Zack Kassian (keep hearing comparables!). Virtanen is almost in between Ehlers and Ritchie, where he is super fast with a good shot but is also built like a tank. That said, David Booth even this year combines speed with awesome power moves - I think IQ is very underrated, and Virtanen from the sounds of it doesn't have a lot. At the end of the day I am happy with Ritchie, Ehlers or Virtanen and hope we don't draft Perlini, Fleury, or McCann.

There is a huge drop off from Draisitl/Dal Colle to Ehlers/Ritchie/Virtanen/Fleury/Perlini. Nylander and Kapanen are hard to judge, but Nylander has been as high as 5th. 2009 is one year where the top 6 went as expected but like this draft there was a big drop off after 6th. In fact, all of the top 6 have become top line/pairing players (with the exception of Schenn who is very close). That said every other year one player is picked a little off the boards. Out of the next 10 picks only Leddy and Kadri are top 4/top 6 players from the 09 draft. I could see this year being very similar.

ISS/CS Draft Rankings - 2014 NHL Entry Draft

I would be in favour of moving our 1st and 2nd to Calgary for fourth overall, snagging us either MDC or Draisitl. The other alternative is moving our 1st and 2nd to Anaheim for their two firsts. Virtanen/Ritchie/Nylander/Ehlers/Perilini are all on a similar level. Our second pick moves up 8 spots where we might snag someone who has fallen at 27th, perhaps take PMD Anthony DeAngelo. ONLY if someone doesn't drop to our spot. -

Goldobin is ranked 26th by ISS, he could potentially fall to 36th. I think he will end up being the steal of the draft. High end talent on a terrible team. His teammate DeAngelo would also be amazing at 36th. If we draft Ritchie I think it would be interesting to draft Cornel and see if they can develop together. Kevin Fiala is another guy who could drop. Incredible numbers for a 17 year old in the SEL. 17 points in 25 games between reg reason and playoffs. Roland McKeown could also drop to 36. Good puck mover, great shot, solid positioning. Physical and big enough but more of an offensive type player. -

Draft Ritchie first round, Cornel second round. 1 european forward, 1 goalie, the rest of the picks use on defensemen. I was hoping we would get Smith in the third or fourth round but he has moved up a massive amount from 140 to 39. -
I think there is a decent chance Draisitl falls to 6th, as there is often a team who picks a little off the board (I am looking at the Islanders). I think there is a slim chance Calgary maybe goes for Virtanen or Edmonton goes for Ritchie. Islanders are wild card. Wishful thinking - we likely end up picking between Ritchie, Virtanen or Ehlers. If I were GM I would probably pick Virtanen, as a fan I hope we pick Ritchie. Draisitl had 105 points while the team's second highest scoring forward had 61. Ritchie had 39 goals 79 points in 61 games, Cornel 62 points in 68 games and then the third highest scoring forward had 48. These two players were a head above everyone else and stars on their team. Virtanen on the other hand had a much lower ppg with 71 in 71 while two other forwards on the team had 85. This can be looked at a number of ways, but I interpret it as him having much better linemates which of course boosts his numbers (which are already far lower). Ehlers also plays alongside Drouin. Brett MacLean was ranked 14th for NA skaters and looked like an absolute steal at 32nd. He does have scoring ability but not enough to stick in the NHL and has played only 18 games. Playing with Tavares (134 points) obviously boosted MacLean's numbers (100 points). Dany Roussin went second round after scoring sick numbers with Crosby. Plays in the LNAH. Those examples are obviously more for Ehlers than for Virtanen, but that said I wouldn't mind Virtanen but I am praying for Draisitl and hoping for Ritchie.

ISS/CS Draft Rankings - 2014 NHL Entry Draft

If Draisaitl, Dal Colle or Bennett fall to 6 (I figure about a 35% chance of that happening) then it is a no brainer. Otherwise I think it comes down to Virtanen or Ritchie. -
We are the 10th youngest team in the league. Boston is the oldest, Pittsburgh is third oldest. The core is aging but this team isn't old. That said, giving insane amounts of ice time to the twins early on probably wasn't the wisest since they are 33 and not 27. I think with young guys coming in we have the opportunity to role four lines next year, three once injuries hit (and thus being better prepared since our "fourth line" to start the year will be moving up from 12 to 15 minutes, vs 5 to 12 and adding all the minutes to the top lines).
-
If Draisaitl or Dal Colle fell to us that would be amazing. Ritchie is a huge boom or bust. He could become a nastier version of Nathan Horton or end up as a Rupp. But gotta love that upside. Doubt we take a defenseman first round, I have a gut feeling we'll end up with Virtanen, Perlni or McCann (safer picks). I wouldn't mind Ehlers either. Kapanen and Nylander are far too risky.
-
I wouldn't mind Fleury. I am kind of hoping we take a big scorer like Ritchie or Perlini and land another top 10 pick and select either Ehlers/Nylander or Fleury. Perhaps if we grab a pick around 20 the two guys I would look at would be either Goldobin or DeAngelo. Considering there was only one other player with 60 points (Latta with 68) their numbers are astronomical compared to others on the team.

I like Gillis other than handing out so many no trade clauses and letting Ehrhoff walk. Don't think Torts was his decision. Torts is a disaster.
