  1. Is this season a blip or is he trending down at 31 years old? For size and defensive ability I think he would be a better fit than Boeser.
  2. Doesn’t work that way. Maybe have gotten a 3rd for Joshua, still a relatively unknown player. He got better as the season went on. I think he has 20 goal potential but could be an effective “Physical 15” player (second on teams in hits, 4 fights) which is an underrated piece for a team. He is only 26 and has 121 nhl games under his belt. Under contract next season for $825k, such a steal. I’d love to see us extend him early at like 2 years x $1.7 as I’d he keeps progressing I could see teams paying him a lot come free agency.
  3. The three best players over the last 25+ years drafted 18 overall are Chabot, Tuch, and Teravainen. I’d put Hronek on the same level as Chabot and Tuch, so based on history there is a small chance of drafting a player as good, never mind better than Hronek at 18. Defenseman include Harley, Vaakainen, Stanley, Chabot, Mueller, Cole, Parent, Grebeshkov, Orpik, Kalinin. Long story short - drafting a player like Hronek at 18 would be considered a fantastic pick and drafting a player of that quality outside of the top 10 is very difficult
  4. He is not a 3 centre, or a 1st line centre. He is a good 2nd line centre. A good second line centre should make 5-6 million - not 8.5. And I agree he is not a player driver. Horvat the last 3 seasons combined is 34th in scoring for centres - Miller is 7th. Even after back to back weak seasons Boeser is still 16th for RW
  5. Bruins would be the worst for me, followed by Tampa. Colorado felt like 3 eras - for some reason 1996 and 2001 seemed like they were much further apart but I was born in 87 so my perception of time is off. Beat the Canucks in both of those rounds although it wasn’t close haha
  6. I don't care much, and I hated the Oilers and Flames back when we had rivalries. But since the Canucks have been bad I'd love any of the Canadian teams to win a cup. I don't care for the Rangers or Devils, hate the Bruins and am sick of Tampa winning, Florida doesn't really deserve to win, Carolina has been extremely lucky with playoff success considering they are usually a low budget team, still kinda hate the Wild, Vegas also has had a lot of success early etc. Seattle winning would actually kinda hurt, and the Avs have won enough. So I'd love to see Toronto or Winnipeg win, and would be somewhat happy to see the Oilers or Islanders win.
  7. pre Hirose and Wolanin I thought Reilly could be a good option but now the left side is a bit crowded. I can see Garland being moved for a bottom 6 center with a pick going either way depending on quality and cap
  8. It will probably be worse post Judd Brackett. 2019 was his last draft - Podz, Hogs, Silovs, Mcdonough - very solid. 2020 and 2021 I wouldn't be that suprised if we don't get an NHL regular out of those two drafts. That said, 2022 looked better with Pettersson and Kudryatsev trending well although not too happy with the Lekkerimaki pick. Most of the core scouts are still around, so the change shouldn't be that drastic but Judd was the biggest piece.
  9. I think he got overrated because at the end of the Sedin era when the team was bad he was really only the one good young player we had. Then Boeser came along and it felt Bo went to the backburner a little bit and then EP came along and took things to an entirely new level. So since he was sort of the oldest of the new crop it makes sense he was captain, but I always thought he was very overvalued and overrated as a result of the team desperate to market a young star player. Good player, nice kid, but was a meh captain.
  10. I think he was going to take Tinordi at #25 and move the following years pick. Florida drafted Howden who has 1 goal in 16 games with Grenoble of the French league this year haha. Petrovic and Merrill were available as “big Dmen”, both kinda suck as well. Actually that was a horrible year to pick a defenseman: Gudbranson 3 McIlrath 10 Gormley 13 Forbort 15 A bunch more guys as well were busts, with only Fowler and Faulk out of the 15 being drafted turning into good players. 2016 had: Juolevi 5 Sergachev 9 Bean 11 McAvoy 14 Chychrun 16 Fabbro 17 Peeke 34 Girard 47 Lindgren 49 Hronek 53 it is crazy how badly Juolevi busted in context. Out of 16 drafted 7 turned into really good NHL players and a handful of other guys like Fabbro, Bean, Stanley, are hanging around. Adam Fox also went in the third round that year !
  11. If Johansson, Hirose, Sasson, McWard, and Tolopilo were a draft from like 4 years ago with these guys joining the NHL/AHL next year it would actually be a decent draft year. Really makes up for picks we traded away
  12. A lot of writers said “one of if not the worst contracts in hockey”. He exceeded expectations his first season here
  13. Bear is far more important to this team than fans give him credit for. While Bear’s numbers are solid albeit unspectacular, both Hughes and OEL really elevated their play this year with Bear as their partner. He gives us many different looks. He is still young as well - definitely one to keep.
  14. Pearson $1.25M retained and Jack Rathbone for Taro Hirose and Albert Johansson. Then we can have a Johansson - Johansson pairing and two Hirose
  15. Hirose Livingstone McWard Hirose looks like he could be a special player - something about him I got a good feeling he is such a good skater and so cerebral in how he reads plays . Livingstone maybe similar to Cody Franson - big guy who can put up points but will struggle defensively from time to time. McWard not sure, maybe a bottom pairing.
  16. Dermott probably walks, not sure about the UFAs. So that is 13. Plus Andy Carroll and I am sure one or two other younger AHL guys will stick around as well.
  17. Wild to see a former 1st round pick finally become an NHL regular in his 30s
  18. Hronek is 16th in scoring for RHD and Bo is 26th in scoring for LHC. Looking at defensive impact, Hronek was 73% WAR and 97% PK to Bo 26% and 37% PK. So Hronek is arguably much better defensively for his position than Horvat. Also a great PKer Vs a below average one. Hronek will play 4 minutes more per game. He is making half the amount next year. Hronek for Horvat straight up is a bit of a steal. Raty is a fantastic prospect and Beau putting up 1st line scoring makes this highway robbery. If we move Beau for a 2nd - we basically got the better player, a good prospect and a pick.
  19. Ryan Johansen is a decent comparable. Career high 71 points plus a 61 and 63 point season. 24 when he signed his deal though (8x8). Bo at 70 points this year, one 61 point season prior. I think he is a guy whose salary should start with a 6 - maybe 6.8, so definitely over paid but not awful. I’d consider Bo a 60 point player. A lot of people were upset thinking Miller cashed in big for a 99 point season but a 99 point player usually gets 11+. We are paying Miller to be a 70-75 point player at 8 million
  20. The issue I have with Benning, as @Diamonds alluded to, is that he actually had net negative # of picks plus a few downgraded positions. For a team that really was in a strong playoff position once that is unacceptable, especially consider he had/could have gotten picks/assets back for Bieksa, Garrison, Hansen, Burrows, Hamhuis etc. Benning didn’t have a great young core but he had plenty of opportunities to stockpile picks, draft high and have a large number really good players available, and the farm team he inherited did have some prospects who with the right development could have turned into players (Grenier, Jensen, Shinkaruk, Gaunce, Corrado, Markstrom). Don’t forget that team went to the Calder finals. Very impatient - it’s like guys had to jump right into the NHL or they got traded. Virtanen for example sucked in the AHL and still got a free ride to the NHL - he and McCann needed time to develop. The threw Hogs and Podz into the fire as well. Benning’s last season out of the top 8 scorers only one was a Canucks prospect and Allvin inherited an AHL team that was pretty empty. The team since has used the farm to help develop Aman, Hoglander & Podz, added Sasson, Bains, Raty, and will likely have Hirose, McWard, Tolopilo next year. It definitely feels like a shift back to the Brian Burke & Manitoba Moose days. The Chicago Wolves was a disaster hence why Gillis got ownership to buy an AHL team. The worst part though is how he handcuffed the team with awful contracts. OEL & Myers are very expensive for what they bring, not to mention buyout for Holtby, Halak’s bonus etc One thing I’ve learned is paying for an expensive player, unless it is a 50/50 hockey trade (Bert for Lu), rarely works. The core of our team had typically been drafted players or players we acquired through selling. Which maybe makes Hronek a mistake - but if you look at Horvat + 2nd for Beau, Hronek, and Raty it looks a little different If Benning iced an awful team but left 20 million in cap and was + 5-10 picks I would have loved him
  21. Has it even changed much since Burke ? Gillis said other than investing more money in scouting and hiring Brackett he didn’t change much. Then Benning promoted Brackett but the core guys seem to have been around a long time Rutherford mentioned when hired going after NCAA and Euro free agents which he has done. Tanev and Lack were both huge finds I think Hirose is going to be another
