My son just bombed at the tryout for his little league all star team. Poor kid is crushed.
I remember having awful showings at try-outs and being all kinds of destroyed by it. He doesn't want to hear it though... Letting yourself down is a tough one. It's too bad he's too young for a beer.

Does you and your son know if the roster has been decided yet? As some one who has coached youth baseball for a few years now, try outs for summer ball don't mean much. Coaches tend to take the whole spring season into account and Try outs are more of a policy thing (let everyone have a chance to make the team). There might be hope yet!
I have a tough try out story. I was in 8th grade trying out for my organizations Bantam AAA baseball team. I knew I should have been on that team and felt like I had really good chance despite it being my first year in the division. I was relaxed, I made some really nice plays during the infield portion of the tryout, likewise in the outfield portion. When it came to batting, I fluffed it. In all my years of playing baseball, from Tadpole to College I have never, ever whiffed on 5 straight BP pitches. I have no clue how it happened. I remember walking off, and going to shag in the outfield and just began to cry to myself because I know that I screwed it. I didn't make the team. That team ended up finishing 2nd in Nationals, our organization ended up not having a AAA team the next year. I ended up using the motivation of my failure to accomplish a lot of goals in both my baseball and football careers because I never wanted to be in that spot again.
Moral of the story is that your son is going to be ok. Keep practicing and he will make the team next year.

Roster will be decided in the next week. He's convinced he's not going to make it.
I'm not 100% sure though. There's still the possibility that they talk to the team coaches as well as the tryout formality.
If it is based solely off tonight he won't make it, he bombed everything but his pitching. He usually does really well in all positions and at bat, but tonight wasn't his night.

Heh, we all have those kinds of days.
Hopefully he uses his disappointment / frustration as motivation to train harder / practice and keep on improving for his next chance to shine.
I remember getting cut from AAA ice hockey team. Played AA and wore the C and really worked on leadership skills . Was much more fun than being a 11/12th forward on the AAA team actually....
