Alf, you don't think Hoglander is a player?
-
Benning seems to have done very well in this draft. Podkolzin top 5 pick at 10. Hoglander late 1st pick at 40. Keppen mid to late 3rd rounder at 122 in the 4th. Common thread with all 3, work ethic. All described as relentless. All have big offensive upside and are battlers. Add these guys to Bo, Miller, Pearson, Virtanen, Gaudette, Rousel, Madden, and Petey and Brock and you have a very competitive group who approach the game in the right way.

[GDT] 2019 NHL Entry Draft
Dixon Ward replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in General Hockey Discussion
I really hope Benning sticks to his guns and just takes the BPA the rest of the way. No RHD or PMD will be ready to move from the 2nd or 3rd rounds to the NHL for a while anyway. Just keep filling the cupboard with talent so we have the best possible assets to build a team. Footnote: I think a lot of kudos should go to Benning for having the balls to pick Podkolzin. He is clearly the BPA at 10, having been rated 3-5th throughout the season. Even though he only has 1 year on his contract, Benning still puts the best interests of the team first. He's not picking or trading based on fan's whims or owner's wish to win sooner than later, he is just picking the best player. -
This would be terrible for the long term of the team. OJ has the tools to be as good as Risto. Nylander is either top 6 or bust and he has shown he is not a top 6 in the AHL. Virtanen is much more versatile. He can play on any line and brings other tools.

[Buyout] Ducks buy out Corey Perry
Dixon Ward replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
If the scouting staff determines he is better than more than 2 of Leivo, Pearson, baertschi, Spooner, Goldobin, Virtanen at this point in his career and can be had at a reasonable price for a couple of years, I say go for it. He is a winner. He is tough to play against. -
[Rumour] Jesse Puljujarvi requests trade
Dixon Ward replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
For me they would have to sweeten this deal. At this point Eriksson is a better contributor than Lucic, and has 1 less year of a terrible deal. Also at this point Goldobin has similar upside and more ppg than Poolparty. Granlund is a proven 3-4 line nhler who also has more ppg than Poolparty. They would need to throw in a 2nd round pick for me to do that deal. -
I read one mock draft that had Cozens falling to us. I don't think it's going to happen but I would love to add a great Western Canadian kid to our top prospects. I don't care too much about nationality, but it's nice when at least a couple of our guys could play for Team Canada. I also think he's like Nolan Patrick but faster.

Calgary was not in a similar spot. We were finishing at the top of the league for a few years in a row. They were finishing much lower than us regularly and would have had much better picks but for trading away many of them. I would rather have Virtanen than Sam Bennett and he went at 4th.

There is always a grass is greener attitude around here about everybody else's players. We need RHD and better puckmovers. Ghost is a small RHD who is a good puck mover, but we can sign Edler for a couple of years and give up nothing and he is a better all around d who puts scores some points. I just don't think he is good enough to give away a bunch of hard-fought assets.
-
I wonder what the consensus is about Leason. I like him, but there is always that fear of him being an overage draft pick and those rarely work out. If he dropped to us in the second round, would you want him over a RHD? is he worth the risk? I didn't see him play enough to know.
-
If we get to pick between Dach, Boldy and Cozens, we will have had a very good draft. Dach and Cozens have been between 3-6 on rankings all year. I think Benning's head will pop off if he gets one of those 2. But we'll see. His team always knows what they want.
-
I think Gaudette is like Kesler. He isn't a high pick did well in college and doesn't excel at any one thing in particular. But they both have a huge desire. Both think they can be better than anyone else thinks. I say in 2 years Gaudette will be looking as close to a 2nd line center as he does a 3rd.

I think we need high end speed and skill. Doesn't matter what position, because at this point, we need a bit of everything. Just use our excellent scouts and pick the highest ceiling, elite skill and speed guy. I think the bpa will be a forward, because it seems like the defence are being pushed up the list for teams looking for a dman. Sort of like Barret Hayton last year. He is a good player but probably didn't belong at 5th OA. I have a feeling the same might happen with Soderstrom, Broberg, etc... But wtfdik?
-
In this deal most of it is potential. How else can you do it. The only 2 who are completely known commodities are Zucker and Sutter.
-
To start his career he has been awesome. He has had some injuries and played on a low scoring team and still scored at a very impressive goals per game rate. You are looking at his overall placing and I don't think that tells his story. The goal he scored staring down Carey Price with a sliver of space was maybe the best wrist shot I've ever seen. I think he is a top 10 goal scorer. You can disagree though
-
So you are proposing we give up a top 10 goal scorer in the NHL, a strong 3rd line centre, Peyton Krebs?, Philip Broberg?, a future #1 goalie, a top 3 defenseman, and another roster player for: A 2nd line LW and Jack Hughes? I would like to nominate you for GM of any team other than the Canucks
-
I think Gaudette has a competitive fire that exceeds others and he will do what it takes to be a very, very good nhler. I would not give him away lightly.
-
It gets so boring reading posts from people who just want to be negative and have absolutely no basis for it. I would think that, coming from an NHL family, he will probably know he needs to get stronger physically and will stay in school 1 or 2 years and work on that. But the way he played at the World Juniors and in college this year, he showed he is a quality talent and he will not wait 3 more years to start getting paid. Anything could happen. You could blow out your knee. You have a lottery ticket, you don't want to wait too long to cash it.

I live in Kelowna and I have seen them play a couple of times. Thompson is very mobile and a strong skater. Has a good shot and seems to be a little more offensive minded than defensive minded at times. Doesn't blow you away but looks very slick and confident with the puck. Seems like a poor man's Ryan Ellis when he was young. Korczak is bigger and less offensive minded. Has better puck skills than I think he gets credit for. Skates well but not great. Uses size well and is a more defensive player than Thompson.

Vegan Firefighter Files Human Right Complaint Over Food Served
Dixon Ward replied to DonLever's topic in Off-Topic General
It seems to me that when people are being evacuated and homes are at risk in very extreme conditions, this is a pretty self-centered and petty thing to waste the tribunals time on. Should he bitch about it at dinner parties, yes. Should he whine on social media, if it makes him feel better. But taking up the tribunals time and suggesting that a "human right" has been violated is a bit ridiculous. I do not believe that Veganism is a human right. -
[Proposal] Canucks-Islanders
Dixon Ward replied to Hindustan Smyl's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
The Hockey News re-draft of 2018 had Madden at 31st and Wilde at 27. To suggest that we would throw in a 2nd as well, seems lop-sided. Madden was all the rage at the World Juniors. He stood out and the coach leaned on him. We might throw in a 5th at the absolute most, but for me, keep Madden, he is a gem. -
I would think that in Tenessee, Subban has a chance of helping attract the african-american fans to buy tickets, jerseys, etc... and pay for his big ticket. Had an off year, but I bet he is worth much more to them than to us. I would not give up those assets for him. If we want to spend that kind of money, Karlsson is younger and much better and would really sell tickets in Vancouver. He would also allow everybody to play where they belong. The top 4 would be very good and would give time for Juolevi, Woo and Tryamkin to work their way into the lineup. Edler, Tanev, Schenn will peel away over time and they will fill in. Edler Karlsson Hughes Tanev Hutton Stecher Juolevi Schenn

[Discussion] 3rd Overall pick
Dixon Ward replied to J.I.A.H.N's topic in Proposals and Armchair GM'ing
Character is worth more, in my eyes, than it seems to be in most hockey trades. I think that Horvat is a warrior, a class act, and a team 1st player. This, coupled with a good skill package makes for a very valuable player. We don't know what we would get at 3 character-wise. It would also set back the rebuild a fair amount giving up our excellent #2 centre for a prospect that is probably at least 2 years from contributing at a meaningful, similar level. I would keep Captain Bo, but it is tempting.
