[Signing] Panthers re-sign Brandon Montour
oldnews replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
not a great fit for us but otherwise I'd love to have acquired Montour. best of luck to him there. -
It will be interesting to see what Hakanpaa goes for in free agency. Aside from some hit totals, there's nothing that screams 'pay me'. After what Oleksiak got, who knows - but he should be able to be signed moderately imo. 1 NHL season 5 pts, +4, 18:01 ice time, 51% ozone starts, 48.2% corsi. 215 hits. Penalty killer. Played primarily with Fowler, then Bean.... I have a feeling someone is going to get sill about David Savard. I'd almost prefer the team take a chance on a guy like Hakanpaa - and sign another potentially versatile guy in the process. Hakanpaa and Ceci Both these guys could probably be signed for reasonable cap hit and short to mid term. And in doing so, the team could retain a bit of cap flexibility (or do away with some bonus overage this season?) Hakanpaa could emerge as better then expected - and if not - the team is still poised to pursue other future options. I like Schenn, but I think I'd give up a bit of his heaviness for Ceci's mobility and versatility. With these two guys imo you'd have some flexibilty - and a couple guys that can kill penalties (Schenn may be capable of that but hasn't really killed any volume of penalties since 17/18 in Arizona....)

One aspect of this deal that I am firmly in favour of: With the addition of OEL - as things were before this deal, it was looking like he'd be the best, if not only option to partner with Hughes. There was cap and room remaining to add a few lower cost RHD options/depth - but it was in all likelihood a situation where Hughes either fit with OEL, or it was another year with a placeholder (as it was with Hamonic). Not ideal imo. Moving Schmidt allows them to focus on what I thought should be the priority this offseason - finding the right partner for Hughes. They don't necessarily have to chase a big fish (and by big, I mean mid-tier as a guy like Savard is about as expensive as I'd want to go). Now they can probably realistically chase a Savard, and/or Hakanpaa and still add one of the lower tier/cost guys (Ceci, or Schenn if that's who they prefer). speaking of Ceci - he had a pretty solid season in Pitt imo. 4 g, 13a, 17 pts, +18, 18:31/game in 53 games. 74 hits, 70 blocks Near dead even/median 'possession' numbers / 50% ozone starts, 49.5% corsi Very good goal metrics - 3.2 on ice goals for per 60 5on5, 2.1 against. .927 on ice sv% Second leading penalty killer at 2:31/game. playing primarily with Matheson for a 1.25 million cap hit.

The thing I liked most about Schmidt was his wiring to transtion as absolutely quickly as he could - he may have one of the quickest first passes in the league. That is something that, it seems to me, will fit very well with the way the Jets love to play the game. In terms of transition - I think this team is looking good regardless of whether he's here - Hughes, OEL, Rathbone, Juolevi - all their LHD - can transition the puck - and Schmidt - as a result of the makeup of our group - was the 2nd least likely guy to wind up on the left side. We lost a bit of heaviness with Edler - if he doesn't come back, I think we'll need to remedy that - with a pair of heavier RHD.
-
All we have to do is finish higher than Wpg next year - and we pulled off (perhaps the most protracted/complicated) future trade up of a few spots in a round of the draft, perhaps ever - while getting Schmidt for 'free' lol. Either that or we finish behind them, and paid some spots in the 3rd round to 'rent' him for a year. Whatever. The guy is worth more than a 3rd round pick - in terms of on-ice performance - but for whatever reason(s), GMs have other reasons for balking at his market value - I don't really care as long as he's replaced with someone that is as able to help this team win games. A heavier, harder RHD, please (ideally, more likeable - not vital, but it's 'nice' to be able to 'like' the guys on your team).

Doesn't matter whether the analogy fits. What matters is what the team does with that cap space. I'm gonna wait until I see who takes his minutes until I decide whether I like this deal or not. The people who made this deal - have a far better idea of the answer to that question than I do. I'd have traded Schmidt for the right RHD - if we now sign or acquire one....
-
I like the Jets so I'm ok with that return - to a team like Vegas I wouldn't cut that deal. He'll be a good fit there imo. If 'we' have something else in the works - this makes sense - if not - I'm not sure it does, unless there is something more to it / a burning bridge. I like the way the guy plays the game - not particularly fond of his personality - but whatever - we need a hard to play against RHD to eat his minutes. His versatility is better than a placeholder, but a legitimate, heavier RHD is necessary in the end - so let's see what the team makes of that cap space.

(Rumour) Canucks concerned about a Pettersson offer sheet
oldnews replied to cuporbust's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
speaking of things that start with b, ironically.... you sound like a little drama-queen every time you use juvenile labels like this. whether or not people would support matching an offersheet has literally nothing to do with alleged loyalty to Benning. grow up a little - save your knee-jerk overreactions until / if necessary. -

So what you're saying is that he's signing with Djurgardens? -

Making a categorical statement about JP Barry doesn't really add up - doesn't acknowledge the fact h represented the Sedins - who did nothing but take sub-market value team-friendly deals their entire careers here. -
[Signing] Flyers sign Keith Yandle

Provorov Sanheim Ristolainen Braun Philly has four defensemen that can play hard minutes, kill penalties - and big minutes at that. I don't get the (bad imo) takes in here to the effect that they won't be able to defend. Perhaps it's a defensive forward or two (beyond Couturier and Laughton, Lindblom) that they need to improve off the puck. Their goaltending this season wasn't great either. But it was a bizarre covid/outbreak season league-wide - not sure it's worth reading excessively into last season's outcomes, particularly for some of the younger teams. -

don't forget OV-lite! -
that's somewhat irrelevent though - how we perceive their 'top4' / what it is/was. If you want to knock off a team like Tampa....you can't look at a 'top 4' as adequate. Tampa had 6 x top 4 defensemen....(imo - and Cal Foote + depth like Schenn...) that's the gold standard. If you're Vegas and you have cup dreams - looking at your top 4 and thinking 'that's adequate' - is debatable whether that perspective is good enough/realistic enough. The one mitigating thing to consider imo - is that they have notorious difficulty finishing in the playoffs - so while they can improve their blueline, they could also probably use another pure goal scorer in that mix.
