  1. I don't know - I think the poster may have randomly picked someone they thought would be a bad return - just guessing - but if we flipped Schmidt back to Vegas for Whitecloud and a 2nd as they spitball - I'd consider that a win. Whitecloud would be an excellent addition to our right side - plus a pick - plus the cap to go out and add...I'd probably jump at that deal without needing to overthink it.
  2. you can lyao, but I wouldn't hesitate to acquire Whitecloud. really like the player. He has some outstanding defensive outcomes imo as a young defenseman - and played primarily with another young (Hague) D this season. he's under-rated - and still somewhat under the radar. very affordable. size, physicality, solid foundation to his game, already a reliable penalty killer. I would not laugh at this option or complain about it if he were part of a return.
  3. This. But I would have kept my man Jay Beagle at all costs - deal-breaker!! in the Zona blockbuster!! - so y'all should be thankful you have GMJB instead. I would have insisted they take Holtby instead (with Raanta expiring). They could have then retained 50% on him and moved him for another mid-late pick....
  4. I don't like the offsetting of 1.9 million cap into the following season - they should have the option, imo, of taking the 1.9 million cap towards this season and 50k towards the following - then I'd be in full favour of this. I'm guessing they did this, though, because they have an alternative in the works that they like more. I want Laurent Brossoit - have liked him for a long time (even when he was a Coiler / uptick fantasy target) - he'd be a solid add imo.
  5. I was hoping he'd come in closer to 4 million - but that probably wasn't realistic - and wasn't expecting a full 5 years - so I'm game. I'm not in favour of giving out 25 million contracts to guys who just broke out - had one year of production - but that doesn't really apply to Garland - he was a 20+ goal scorer two seasons ago and followed that up with 39 pts in 49 gams - so taking this risk on 5 seasons could really pay off if he sustains what he's done the past two years - something that's not hard to imagine whatsoever considering he's going from a team where he was the top scorer in terms of ppg - to one where he'll have guys like EP, Boeser, Miller, Horvat, Hoglander, Podkolzin to play with (no disrespect to Phil Kessel et al, but there's good reason to believe Garland can further uptick in this group - as Miller did) - not to mention offensive D like Hughes, OEL, two way guys like Schmidt, Myers, Juolevi, and another young pmd candidate in Rathbone. Not hard to see why Garland was excited to join this group and considers this a team that is "going to be very good". The other indicator that makes me really comfortable with his deal - the kind of player he is - the way he approaches the game - his drive and compete - not a real risk of a 'one-off' imo - he's already upticked significantly in his sophomore and 3rd NHL seasons.... I think the team just took a terrific chance - a good risk - and getting him added to that huge package deal, imo - obsures how great the asset value is that he was acquired for.
  6. Coincidence that you say that - because I drafted Pius Suter in fantasy hockey as a longshot eons ago - and then no NHL team drafted him (oops) - but then it looks like I wasn't so off (got lucky). Eventually developed into the Swiss League MVP - so don't doubt your pick quite yet. Like Ritchie - he can put the puck in the net / provide some secondary scoring - and like Ritchie - he's not going to shut anyone down - otherwise they're quite different players. Suter is small, quick, creative, intelligent (not saying Ritchie is not, just noting Suter's traits - as I see them)... I don't see him as a fit for us - but he'd be a decent secondary center on a line imo (lacks ideal size to be a center, and not a very good faceoff guy...).
  7. Easy player to like - played well for us and earned another contract as a result imo (and fortunately for him, with Tampa) - I'm in full favour of this - as long as he's not pencilled in as Hughes' partner haha. Welcome back Luke - hope it's true - solid depth 3/4 RHD.
  8. they can still sign him the Canucks did this with a number of players they were willing to re-up in the range of their existing contracts but weren't willing to risk/pay potentially inflated arbitration terms that they wouldn't have the option to walk away from Ritchie's production is inflated imo - so I can see why they'd choose to negotiate directly or walk away.
  9. over a million the qualifying offer only needs to equal the previous cap = 1.5
  10. I'd pass on him. 15 g - the tempting part, to go with 102 hits. But otherwise 62.2% ozone starts / 54.1% corsi 2.0 on ice goals for 5on5 - not good, considering his minutes (2.3 against). 2:44/game powerplay ice time. Played primarily with Krejci (44 pts in 51 games). I'm not particularly interested in giving him those kind of minutes/conditions in order to extract 26 pts and some unimpressive 'possession' and goal metrics out of him....ie don't expect production resembling that on our fourth line....
  11. this isn't really a 'tank' move - not necessarily the kind of player that makes you worse. I'd think of it like Tyler Johnson - not a 'bad' player, just not a good cap value (and in his case, not a good fit). Stralman could be a good placeholder - but even at 50% I think this team is more likely to go for a guy in a lower cap range for depth.
  12. Kolyachonok is not a bad prospect either - a 2nd round pick + the 2nd in this deal....a lot to pay to move a near 20 minute D that was in your top 4. Kinda puts the LE dump in perspective - market value to dump him alone would have been considerably higher than this.
  13. and they retain half his cap and flip him.... Stralman is still serviceable - in fact played the 3rd most playoff minutes on the blueline of a pretty good team...reliable, can kill penalties... at 2.75 he'd be a decent add for a competitive team. Zona takes the pick, flips him for another lesser contract.
  14. No surprised there. Hawryluk played with good energy - but not so much composition - looked out of sorts the majority of the time - and let his frustration with not finishing show in his body language. That's ok within reason - but it's more important to stay consistently focused/engaged. Anyhow - I don't see him outcompeting his way into a group like Motte, Dickinson, Podkolzin, Highmore, MacEwen, Gadjovich, Lockwood, Jasek - particularly when another guy like Pearson is likely to be moving down a line as well...
  15. I don't agree with any of it. The time, imperative to be aggressive - stories/assumptions about 'employment'. They've already been highly aggressive - when the opportunity to do so was right. Wanting to be aggressive -anticipating certain market conditions - doesn't mean you categorically should be - particularly if/when the market doesn't play out as hoped/anticipated. The Arizona deal was particularly opportune imo - against the grain of the market imo - for particular reasons (Zona leaking as a franchise, OEL's list of 2, etc) - they were ripe for the kind of deal this team cut with them. Realistically to move a pair of contracts like LE and Roussel's alone, under 'normal'/present circumstances - could/would take the bulk of what was sent out, alone. Anyhow - without actual proposals - ideas of who to actually target in this market - the whole idea of 'upgrading' is a sandcastle - and getting the cart ahead of the horse. A shrewd buyer is not going to chase the shiny, big fish assets in frenzy conditions (this market is not looking like last year's) - they'll target the relative value outside the margins - which is what I'd propose regardless, unless some player really wants to come here. Actually - what I'd probably do - is get out ahead of it and sign Edler if he wants to come back at reasonable terms - having him in your back pocket beforehand, if you actually intend to move Schmidt, would not be the worst idea - taking yet another option out of free agency before the gates even open. I suspect a guy like McCabe will cost more. And I don't believe Edler is done - for a number of reasons - I think last season was a gruelling outlier outbreak season - I'd gamble on Edler still having on ice effectiveness left in him (and a boost of energy getting OEL to further complement the group). If you have no proposals though, then we're wasting our time on 'philosophy'/hypotheticals - with no context - and I've had my fill of that for this thread. The point is to scope it beforehand, not simply sell - and then look at the options/conditions - if you're 'needing' to improve rapidly. I don't buy that - so I'd be open to selling Schmidt and being patient - that cap doesn't necessarily have to be re-spent immediately (but where I do agree with you is I'd only be leaning one way or the other if in fact he does want out - which I don't necessarily buy either).
  16. if only Craig Anderson were from Toronto and grew up with a Leafs sippy cup.... they'd have their Andersen replacement.
  17. I don't agree whatsoever - but that doesn't matter. Let's get to brass tacks - let's see your proposal to "upgrade" over Schmidt using the cap you gain.
  18. doesn't matter - they're not in a Cup window anyway - no pressure on them to win any playoff rounds anytime soon. they should be patient and continue to execute their #proper-rebuild.
