Confident is.... optimistic. In other words - the Rags will have to take a cap (dump) back. Bottom feeding teams willing to take a chance on him? Rags scratch that. Redwings scratch that - Stevie Y has seen it all before and dumped him. Ottawa....? Would Boston take him?

[Rumour] Sam Bennett requests trade

In fairness to the present Sam Bennett - he is getting a team low 25.9% ozone starts (but he's also playing with a pretty solid Backlund). I'd pass on the Virtanen proposals - but I would take him otherwise... To Calgary Roussel To Van Bennet -

so the panic was premature? -
yeah - and the 'problem' of lacking wingers - is as easy to solve as any position (arguably/particularly in a covid market) - but they never do. someone should poach Benson from them before the wreck him. come to think of it - he's a Tyler - so get it done.

Chiasson 0 points in 6 games, -5, with a whopping 4:47 of powerplay ice time per game... Josh Archibald, by comparison, has better production, better possession numbers, better on ice goal metrics - and is outhitting Chiasson 37-4, with 9 blocked shot to 0 - and kills penalties. The Oilers also haven't scored a 5 on 5 goal yet in 6 games with Chiason on the ice. Not surprising he's waived.

typical Lames fans. Giordano, Hanifin and Valimaki - and they'd want Mete. True, Montreal doesn't have the cap space (nor need) for Bennet -

that's a terrible comparable though. Tyler Johson has $20 million of term remaining over 4 years - on the wrong side of 30. He was a 14 goal scorer - not 29 - when he was waived - and that 29 goal, 48 pt season came while playing with Kucherov and Point - who scored 128, and 92 pts respectively that season. So if a team has a top line with a pair that produced 220 pts and need a 48 pt winger - he's your guy. In other words - context matters = as inflated as production gets. He's not a particularly good faceoff guy, he's not a particularly good 'possession' player, he's not particularly physical - essentially a smaller tweener winger/center that not a lot of teams - in fact none are keen to add for $20 million (something actually proven - not based on an anonymous flake source arrogant enough to speak for 30 NHL teams). Sam Gagner was 27 yrs old, scored 50 pts in 13:43 of ice time with Columbus (ie less minutes, to go with slightly lower ozone starts and nowhere near the linemates that Johnson had = Hartnell and Sedlak) - the season before the Canucks signed him...and look how he was received in Vancouver. Virtanen outproduced Johnson last season He did so playing fewer minutes, less opportune minutes and with less than half the powerplay ice time that Johnson had. Virtanen's cap hit was $1.25 million - meaning his qualifying offer was 1.25 million. To claim that not one NHL team would qualify an 18g, 36 pt 23 year old, who played 13:05 of primarily 3rd line minutes - is the kind of idiocy we've come to expect from Vancouver media. No wonder this is such a pissy, dramatic market.- 239 replies

[Rumour] Sam Bennett requests trade

Johnston is making a fool of himself. Let me flush out his "source" for you.... That is an idiotic, extremely pretentious claim. One source spoke for all 30 NHL clubs. Only amateurs, who are desperate for attention - like you have at the Province or Canucksmarmies - would publish such bottomfeeder material. -

Yikes - is Dunn ever over-rated in here. Awful deal for us. Not sure why/how/where people think Dunn improves this team. -
Not sure you can call that a win-win, simply because Tampa went on to win the Cup. Getting a 20th overall pick for Miller - is a (mean value pick) loss imo. But Tampa had enough left remaining to win regardless. That said - they relatively stole him in the 1st place - as part of the McDonagh deal that (a lot riding on Miller to rescue some lasting value for the Rags in that deal - K'Andre that is). That pick (20th overall) was half the price it cost them to acquire Coleman though (that 1st + Nolan Foote/a 1st round pick - got them Coleman) - who helped them win that Cup. Still a pretty steep price to pay for Coleman and a 3rd = Miller and a 1st.... No Cup and Tampa probably gets ripped for that value chain....
-
Nick Paul and Paquette are not interchangeable imo - Paul has considerably more trade value - is a good under-the-radar-as-yet target with solid indicators to uptick. But I agree with you on the gist of the framework of your proposal. Make it Paul and Paquette - and probably don't expect as high a pick.

I've wasted enough time. Your criteria is hopelessly oversimplified, reductive, meaningless....and I doubt wasting any further time will register. "Following" your thinking is like herding cats.

wat?

Motte's not a "10th forward" - as usual you posture a lot but don't know what you're talking about.

Full disclosure - I love AV so that's my 'starting point' - but it's for a lot of reasons. Sometimes small sample production and +/- don't tell much of the story. Konecny has been playing with Patrick, Lindblom (and sometime Giroux). He's geting (probably) the 2nd most opportune minutes among that team's forwards. His corsi is 42.1% (106 on ice shot attempts against, 77 for). AV is one of the premier puck possession coaches in the NHL. He knows what he's doing, he knows what he sees - and he can undoubtedly identify outlier outcomes, and what players are (and are not) pulling their weight. An on ice shooting percentage of 18.8% is not going to sustain with that group - so AV probably looks to the longer term likelihood of success when losing the possession game. If he's had to repeat and repeat himself...what's the next instrument? He's never been a coach to elevate young players prematurely - but like the present Canucks, he's had about 10 players under the age of 25 in his lineup. I imagine he's just setting expectations - and not picking favorites. He's not a coach whose level-headedness I would question.
-
No - the stupid move was re-signing him as opposed to dumping his rights when his value was inflated. The Rangers have Adam Fox to take his pp minutes - and they have Nils Lundvist on the way. All 3 of them RH undersized puck moving types. They have Trouba to eat big two way minutes on their right side - who is also capable on their 2nd powerplay unit. They should have dumped DeAngelo - assuming that was possible/assuming there may have been a market for him - in the offseason.

To Ottawa Virtanen Roussel To Van Paul Paquette -
I think the game has grown globally - and there is more talent pool - fourth lines are far, far more skilled - almost all teams roll 4 lines relative to the past - I don't necessarily want contraction and I think teams can increasingly dress talented lineups right down to their last player - but I'm not keen on continued expansion and the bloody expansion drafts which mess with team building in various ways. I think the maximum salary should be reduced. I realize the power that marquis players have - but they're not worth the relative difference. Players like the Sedins have accepted internal team salary structures - which enabled their team to fill out a better roster - that enabled their team to be more competitive - and by implication respected the impact/contributions of players that weren't necessarily core. I think that is the way to go - and further I think it's more representative of actual value.
-
thanks Nostradamus. I was talking league wide - not simply the Canucks - and I was referring to what I prefer/would want to see - not what you expect. there will always be relatively unproven, or marginal depth players making league minimum. This has literally nothing to do with Tyler Motte.
-
I wouldn't be so sure it doesn't also have to do with his on-ice play. They just re-signed him - hard to imagine his antics/character/personality were a mystery... He has 1 powerplay assist in 6 games. -6 70% ozone starts. 6.6 on ice goals against per 60 5on5. Easily the worst on-ice player (and liability) for the Rangers thus far. Last two seasons he played with a pretty solid stay at home Marc Staal. Now he's playing with Smith/Johnson. Anyhow - I think they overpaid him, prematurely. First, his 10.1% shooting percentage last season - is an obvious outlier that he's not going to sustain / that was destined to return to mean. Second, 48% of his assists have come on the powerplay - 42% last season = fairly one-dimensional - to go with undersized, not particularly physical, and apparently a headcase.
-
No - not really. Chatfield at 33.3% ozone starts OJ at 34.1% ozone starts. OJ also playing a 2nd pairing penatly killing role (nearly 2 minutes/game pk). Not sheltered - actually quite challenging minutes, particularly for rookies, Playing with a veteran partner isn't really enough to consider them 'sheltered' imo. Which is very promising. They're both proving to be very serviceable already - so blueline depth is looking pretty good.

[Rumour] Sam Bennett requests trade

I think I'd have to pass. Bennett being a center is the tempting aspect. His reverse trajectory - not so much. If there was more of a hard minutes sample to look at, maybe, but the assumption/idea that he'd make an ideal 3C - is premature imo - and he's played too much wing in recent years to assess. And although he plays as physical a game as Virtanen, he does so with 30 less pounds on that frame - and without Virtanen's high end speed. I think Bennett has actually had more opportunity than Virtanen - and has done less and less with it (small sample playoff perks aside). Maybe it's just that he's "18 year old" - maybe it's that he's a Lame, or maybe it's that mustache. The results of these kinds of trades are highly unpredictable - but for me I like the frame, speed and skillset that Virtanen has to work with, I like that he's accepted his role all along (and seems to have respected Green all along). I also think he's 'young-minded' - so while he may be 24 - I still think it's a bit too premature to do a lateral-at-best project dump kind of deal. If people are dead set on getting a young potential 3C type - call Snottawa while they're still stung and snap up Nick Paul.
