Calgary may be on a 3 game slide - but that's on neither Marky or Tanev imo. Marky is 2-2 with a .911 sv% - respectable enough, particularly early this season (where most defenses are lagging). Rittich playing tonight. Tanev has a pt, he's +3, and leads that team with a dozen blocks. 44.4% ozone starts 58.2% corsi Not a single on ice goal against 5 on 5 yet this season. Awfully solid.

lame thread in the first place even lamer to bump it.

I'm not sure I have much to add here. If people want to refer to a D that has averaged over 22 minutes over his career - even on arguably the deepest right side in the NHL - and relatively consistently throughout - who remains in that range - as a "3rd pairing D" = then clearly hockey is not a 60 minute game - because it would take far more than 60 minutes to fit all those top4 in above him. He isn't a case of situational, misleading minutes - ie, to repeat the Hutton, DelZotto analogy - are horrible comparables... Dishonesty is the wrong word - I am simply unconvinced - and I find the counter arguments fairly obstinate. Perhaps just agree to disagree. Unless you want to answer this question: Who were the real top 4 RHD last year, if Myers was not one of them? Who are they presently?

A realistic analysis of Jim Benning's tenure so far

I agree in general with the chaos towards the end of the Gillis tenure - and I'd add that I think the most damaging decision the franchise made - was the year of Tortorella experiment - which was not only a misfit - but set them back more than just that year... The one thing I'd disagree with in your assessment is the idea of re-signing Toffoli - I'd have opted for Tanev instead for a few reasons - 1) prioritizing Hughes' partner, 2) retaining a high end shutdown D pairing and 3) the relative depth of the organization in youth at RW = Boeser, Hoglander, Virtanen, Podkolzin (Gaudette also potential winger conversion).. Markstrom is probably my favorite goaltender of all-time - but signing him and losing Demko would have resulted in a scene like the recent seige of Washington - so I find it pretty comical when some folks came in here in recent weeks to claim they 'shoulda signed Markstrom'. Very few people considered Markstrom a contender to be a legit starter through the majority of his time here. If I can let go, anyone else here ought to be able to. Which also makes sense from a team trajectory standpoint - their young talent are a few years away from beginning to approach their prime - Demko is that guy that fits the team's timeline (and gives them far more cap flexibility in the meantime). Very hard to see Markstrom go - but necessary. -
I don't want to get on Pearson's case - I find him solid overall, even if spotty/inconsistent - but I was looking at that line last night and wondering what it'll look like if they manage to keep the 'heaviness' but add some speed and playmaking - it could be bloody dynamic. Horvat has scored some pp goals and been dominant in the faceoff circle thus far this season, but I'm finding him and Pearson a bit 'flat' at 5on5. Not the worst time to be expiring - I think as the young 'bottom six' guys develop, those two lines get more and more solid in shutdown - and EP/Boeser continue to develop...should take more weight off Horvat. I'm probably one of the minority that would re-sign Sutter if the price is reasonable. If Motte were to move up - Horvat's line would still be bloody hard to play against, but quicker on the wings. If Podkolzin takes that spot - they have a young two way powerforward there. Hard to see where Pearson fits moving forward - part of the reason I proposed moving him this offseason, because he might have been as moveable cap as there was (while still being palatable), and 'replaceable' in due course. If Pearson and Roussel could be moved, I'd probably take those chances.

Thanks and no worries - I'd have to google Ben Shapiro to know who the guy is - but first I'd have to care enough about Trump's chorus to bother --which I don't. Btw - if you agree with 75% of Benning's moves - be careful - I think that would put you in homer territory haha. I don't see Beagle as a significant enough contract - or term - to be too concerned -and I think he's a necessary 'foundation' piece over that duration. I don't see those kind of hard minutes as mere 'mentoring' - and I agree with rewarding Beagle, Dorsett types in general for being the 'warriors' they've been. On the contrary - I'd much rather see the millions shaved off the Matthews, Nylanders etc of the NHL and go to their team-mates, who work harder than they do. I'd sign the Beagle deal all over again in a heartbeat - and probably add yet another veteran depth center to the mix (if I could have signed Richardson this offseason, I would have - and moved wingers. The deal I didn't care for that summer was the Roussel deal - explained my reasons at the time and feel pretty much the same way about it today. I don't have a problem with the Myers deal - I would have if it had been in the dramatically projected range of $50 million / 7x7. It was 5 years by the way - and $30 million is quite a huge chunk away from $49/50. -

it's impossible to agree with all the decisions any GM makes. and all of them make 'mistakes' - it's part of the game when you make as many decisions and take as many risks as they all necessarily do. I've made it plenty clear over the years the ones I agree with - and those I don't - and can't be bothered to rehash or qualify them. Why would Benning be 'mad' for that (hypothetical) strategy? I find the question borderline meaningless. What RFA that a GM couldn't afford are you proposing? What isn't in 'style' imo - are overkilled, cheap Trump references = so if you're going to talk about what's in vogue - mind numbing political/ideological references with no real place in a hockey discussion don't cut it... are 'liberal' motivation to make use of the ignore function. I imagine we can manage a decent hockey discussion otherwise. -

If that's all you've seen - the blindness is your own. True only in generalization - that discussions tend to become 'bipolar' / and mimic mindless ideological squabbling. Irony however - if you want the 'nuanced' version of discussion - don't initiate / bring the mindless ideological references in yourself - it wrecks your alleged goal/claim. -
what do DelZotto or Gudbranson have to do with this discussion? You brought them up here - not me - I think you're confusing other posts/posters. it's not hard line whatsoever - it's a simple, elaborated upon counterpoint to a terrible claim that Myers is a 3rd pairing D - simply factually incorrect on various levels.

which core? the first or the second? Florida (or California, or Arizona, etc) are not comparable hockey markets to Vancouver wadr. those markets are full of casual, fair-weather, bandwagon fans....when those teams aren't winning, what happens in those markets. The Kings last run for example couldn't even sell playoff tickets in the early rounds because folks were waiting for the finals.... people here are rabid - they spend their money on hockey regardless. Benning doesn't make decisions in a vacuum - he serves more than one 'master' - and one of those is not a 'rebuild' - it's ownership. -

so stories and "style" are situational. -
I'm not ignoring Myers faults - it's not my job to come here and make a point of them. Every player has their limits - pointing them out doesn't negate their strengths - or what puts them in the position they are in. Hughes has plenty of faults - doesn't change the fact he's a highly talented "top 4" pmd.

Nonsense. Meaningless claim again. Stecher/Fantenburg/Benn were the 3rd pairing D last year. Because you can pick out a moment where a coach remixes his pairings is relatively meaningless. Myers has played with Juolevi a lot this year - doesn't make Myers a '3rd pairing D.' The bottom pairing claim about Myers in Winnipeg is also just plain false. 21:40 of ice time there over 5 years - and never under 20 - is ludicrous to refer to as '3rd pairing' - and even moreso when you look more closely at the context. The embarassment of riches the Jets had at RHD with Byfuglien, Myers and Trouba - absolutely in stark contrast to the horrible comparables of Del Zotto or Hutton in inury replacement coupled with rething minutes here. No comparison whatsoever - and the fact that Myers commanded those minutes on a team that was easily one of, if not the deepest at RHD - undermines, doesn't make, your case.

It's ironic you reference Thornton....when his Leafs just signed a 30 yr old Brodie to a 4yr/$20 million deal (will expire at the same time as your "on your way down" 28 year old.... Make no mistake - if Dubas had more allowance money, he'd have spent it. The reason he doesn't.... I'm shocked someone signed Pietrangelo - he should have retired. -
I wouldn't assume he is sittting - it's been assumed before already once this year and it did not turn out to be the case. And - there are some good young players this year who have sat - Gaudette, MacEwen....so 'platooning' the young 'bottom 6' is reasonable enough imo. Personally I'd move - or sit - Roussel before Virtanen - but in fairness to Roussel, he has relatively woken up of late (ie he had 7 hits through 6 games - and 13 in the last 3....if Roussel is not physical, hard on the forecheck in particular, and working hard every shift, he doesn't belong in this lineup imo). Besides, Virtanen 'needs' a resident homer in here in his corner - otherwise these boards are saturated with nothing but complaining about him (most of it weak one-liners that are horrible, one-dimensional assessments) - you break it up and add some entertainment value.

I guess you missed the punch to Tkachuk's ugly mug. Best two minutes anyone on this team has spent in the box all season. Otherwise he gets a lot of "too much/too big a man" soft calls. And as I pointed out in another GDT - 23 of his 25 penalty minutes have come in 2 games - one of those was a 5 minute major the NHL rescinded after the fact....otherwise he has one minor in 8 games. This blueline needs some mean on it - and he's the primary guy.
