  1. no - before you can trade a player that you claimed off waivers the team that you claimed him from has the right to take back that player's rights - only if they decline can you then trade that player.
  2. Imagining isn't the same as knowing though - so there's not much point imagining/assuming the team he does not report to would be 'penalized.' If a player does not report he is suspended - which removes his cap hit. Would the 35+ rule over-ride a suspension for failure to report? I don't care enought to read the cba - but I'd bet on the team that got shafted in the claim not being on the hook for a player that violates the terms of his contract (and the cba). They might still be on the hook for his salary? It's a good question but whatever the answer - both the Leafs and Spezza come off as entitled wankers (not the surprising really - they're Toronto)
  3. I doubt that cap could be assigned to a team that he does not report to. He would be the one electing to terminate. I would think he'd have to actually be a member of your franchise - but I don't know. And it's below the $1.05 (or whatever it is presently) that can be assigned. So if it wasn't mutual termination.... It's a very good question. That might be an angle they are trying to exploit. Nothing is below the Leafs. I think if he refused to report and retired - the cap penalty should actually apply to the Leafs. Maybe even more incentive.
  4. Calgary got lucky with the timing of the covid cap crunch. They had Brodie 4.65 Frolik 4.3 million Hamonic 3.85 Talbot 2.75 expiring at an opportune time.
  5. The Canucks have a legit reason to claim him. He's a good faceoff guy - and in spite of being a depth C in Toronto, he's more suited to a (secondary) scoring role than shutdown. Claim him with the intent to throw him in between EP and Boeser until Miller returns. If he doesnt' like the option - doesn't want to play with Pettersson and Boeser - go ahead and retire.
  6. It's a lame attempt however to make themselves an exception to the waiver rules everyone (else) is subject to. But, but we're the Leafs and Jason is special and wants to stay close to home. The dick move was waiving him in the first place - knowing this. The Leafs are who has put him in this position. If anything, I'd look at it as more incentive to claim him. Make him retire if he believes this 'threat' ("I will retire") will enable him to circumvent the process. Take one more option away from them. Every other team in the North benefits. Suck it Leafs.
  7. The Leafs also had no business winning opening night. Weber Petry Edmundson and Chiarot have been solid.
  8. Burke will spin whatever he can - in desperation - in the darkest moment he can detect. it's the sad reality of his amateurism.
  9. How fitting that squam would be the CDC source of JD Burke. The comical thing about Burke's ignorance.... 1) Toffoli doesn't have a point (either) - as if the team's fate would be different were he here... 2) Hoglander is the player that would have been blocked by Toffoli's presence (not Virtanen). but, most importantly 3) the principal problem is not having a center replacement for Miller = being too young (and not strong enough) down the middle. No Miller neutralizes their primary scoring line....right now it's win/die on the powerplay - and they simply are not producing. Burke - as usual - has no idea what he's talking about. But good timing as a desperate, whiny attention seeker. And even more bottom line (that I wouldn't expect a noob like Burke to understand) - if the team were to spend the extra cap on one of their departing players - it should have been Tanev.
  10. I recall getting a whack of confused emojis in the Miller trade thread as a response to suggesting that they acquired him to center Pettersson's line....
  11. Not gonna pretend I had a 'good feeling' about this game. Not surprised by the result. At the same time - they have the answer returning (assuming Miller's covid protocol ends soon enough). I still think the team 'should' have prioritized adding another veteran center. Would still like to see them move a player like Roussel and a pick and try to bring back a heavier forward - that can platoon and take draws. Nick Paul as a younger option. Jenner as a veteran option (obviously more expensive, but - depending on how competitive they hope to be shorter term....)
  12. They're pretty much where they were at the end of the playoffs. Too tall an order imo to win consistently with both EP and Gaudette centering two lines - just too young down the middle. Hard enough imo to win with 1 center that young - I'd prefer neither of them center a line (but in fairness to Gaudette, he is looking more ready to start this season. I also don't think Calgary's top line is good enough to need to load up a shutdown line with both Beagle and Sutter on it....
  13. Get Pettersson on the wing. Not simply so he doesn't have to take draws - but so he doesn't have to fill the defensive center duties - particularly battling down low in his zone. EP Sutter Boeser
  14. Those second passes / neutral zone passes are just way too passive/'neutralizing'
  15. tonight there have been at least two or three plays where he simply disengaged / was vacant - you extremely rarely see that out of him. ie that last defense against the rush where you could see before he got beat that he lacked intent.
  16. NHL games experience Pettersson 141 Boeser 199 Hoglander 2 Gaudette 122 MacEwen 23 Motte 189 Hughes 75 Juolevi 2 Demko 38 makes Virtanen look like a relative 'veteran'.
  17. the young talent is clearly a bit frustrated - but any number of them can break out at any time.
