Yes, true. Last year in Washington: 25.2% ozone starts 39.2% corsi. Actually had better 'possession' results this year, on a relatively depleted bottom 10 team. 22 points in 79 games last year, 13 pts in 57 games this year.... If he'd had 16 pts this year, he'd have matched last year's scoring rate. I think he actually exceeded expectations - was an absolutely 'foundational' - and indispensible - support veteran to these young guys this year. He gave everything in this context that he did in one where he had a Stanley Cup opportunity. 'Elite' character.

I think you lack the perspective to assess a player like this - as this one-liner suggests... I realize the 'analytics' of shutdown players is probably not of interest to you - certainly seems that way, but here were some of Beagle's key objective outcomes: 18.5% ozone starts 40.4% corsi That's actually a relatively outstanding differential - and a huge aspect of the point of signing a player like this is his ability to turn dzone opposition possession into territory and possession for this team. Players like EP simply don't get 70% ozone starts without players like Beagle in the lineup - particularly in the absence of Sutter. 56.2% faceoffs - leads to a fair amount of opportunities to generate zone exits out of dzone faceoffs. Outstanding, principal penalty killer. What exactly were you expecting? More production in that context? I'm not sure you're seeing the point wadr.

5:50 mark - and then again at 7:00 minute mark question is answered - reiterates the same stupid quesion.... "are you concerned at all with what happened?" The impatience, and distant pretender armchairing is assinine. I'm just surprised that Benning knew what was happening with Lind, for example, given he doesn't pay attention to Uticaz.

And there's the drama in this market in a nutshell. "Cancer" in Utica. A GM that neglects them for 9 months. Cool storyline/analogy. No drama at all.

Exactly. The team has nothing like a "too many bodies" problem There will be some guys that get pushed out of the picture - like Gagner was this year. As Gaunce was this year. Like you say, there are a number of placeholders that it simply doesn't matter if they become/remain peripheral. I'm in strong opposition to the idea that it's time to deal young players like Virtanen - imo that is an awful 'plan'. The irony - the people that sandbag him on here - that run him down and devalue him - propose to sell low on him at this point. That's no way to 'rebuild/transition'. The only way players like Virtanen should be moved - is if a team /teams come knocking with offers you simply can't refuse. There's no need to start dangling/moving youth at this point = horrible assessement of where the team is imo. Virtanen - like McCann - is still quite young and has time to emerge - dealing him prematurely could be a helluva mistake - and selling low on him at this point is simply ill-conceived. I think instead they should go into free agency with moderate to conservative intentions. I think players like EP might help - the ability to dangle the opportunity to play with him. Personally, I'd target Brock Nelson principally. He's a big, hard working, two way player with plenty of upside - who just produced 53 pts while getting 45.4% ozone starts. That is the kind of winger support I'd love to see with Pettersson - may be able to be signed in the mid range of term/cap - and he's very versatile so if in due course the team drafts a powerforward fit for EP, then he's a guy that can still play virtually anywhere in your lineup. That's the kind of move I'd like to see in free agency among forwards. Another option is to not jump the gun and perhaps look at Brayden Schenn next July 1st while running with a serviceable option for next year - although I think in EP's case they are likely to make haste to complement him. But looking at it at this point....if they were to sign a Nelson.... Nelson EP Boeser Pearson Horvat Baertschi Roussel Sutter Virtanen Granlund Beagle Motte. Leivo LE Of course that leaves some extra bodies to compete to take spots from those players - Gaudette, Goldobin, Schaller, Spooner. Imo Gaudette was and is not ready to replace a player like Sutter. Gaudette = 59.4% ozone starts, 47% corsi, 40.4% faceoffs, 12 pts in 56 games - pretty obviously not ready - and not that productive in even the 'easier' minutes - but the potential was clearly there and his timeline will be up to him. I think if there's a roster guy above that the team may consider moving, it might be Baertschi - although he could be pretty effective with Horvat still, particularly with the addition of Pearson who'd take some pressure off him to provide a forecheck - that harder areas linemate makes a difference imo - that could be a really effective 2nd line, particularly if the bottom six Sutter and Beagle lines are healthy. Likewise on the back end - don't break the bank, but make sure to get another 'foundational' RHD if they're intending to make the playoffs. Not a secret - I propose Stralman, who shouldn't take high end cap/term, and could really stabliize and enable a young blueline, while taking some pressure off Tanev, Stecher. Edler Stralman Hughes Tanev Hutton Stecher Juolevi Biega With plenty of good depth emerging in Utica.....Sautner looked very good, Brisebois needs more time, Rafferty, Teves interesting additions, Woo is a wildcard that could push soon, Pouliot probably in a situation similar to Goldobin - might have a small window in camp to take a large step, but will be in tough. Schenn could be good Utica depth. For some folks those may not be shiny enough acquisitions - but then again, for most people around here Beagle, Roussel weren't shiny enough and yet they made a huge difference. But there is another wildcard in the mix - and that's their top 10 pick in this draft - and depending on who that turns out to be, there could be another challenger for one of those top end spots in the near future, so I'd be tempted to stay in the mid-range of Nelson/Stralman type targets - players that will be effective up and down the lineup regardless, but certainly not out of place at the top end (and if the team is healthy/deep, they arguably don't need to be chasing the shiny objects - they could be very solid to their 12th F and 6th D (and that is fundamental in any event).

Uh this is pretty daft. I may not see my family for a few months, but that doesn't mean I don't know what's going on with them - we talk all the time. But there's nothing like going to see them. People - as usual - reading way too much into nothing.

I don't really agree with this. St Louis was grossly underachieving in the first half of the season - a team that 'should' be in the playoffs - and went on a tear to put themselves in position to - probably playing as well as any team heading into them. It's a team game - and when a team starts rolling, a goaltender can play a role in it, but also benefits from it - and imo that's a blueline in St Louis that can help a goaltender look better.

[PGT] Vancouver Canucks at St. Louis Blues | Apr. 06, 2019

Thought Granlund had a great game - 4 ozone, 11 dzone starts = 53.1% corsi stepping up into a shutdown C role. Looked really good down the stretch of the season as a whole imo. Pearson and Horvat - again handling a lot of hard minutes - 18.2 and 22.2% ozone starts - 'possession numbers' relative to those - but at the same time, once again, strong counterpunching production, managing a goal despite the deployment. Thought Rafferty had a solid game as well, for his 2nd in the NHL.... Quite happy with how the team performed throughout the season, really. -
Cue for armchairs at a distance to pretend to know how Goldobin was handled, and how he otherwise 'should have' been. Fire away with the blind 'corrections' and prescriptions. Personally I'm fairly confident in Green's judgement.

No need for 'excuses'. Odd title tbh. Not sure what the expectations were, but to remain in the playoff race was unrealistic, to put it mildly. Great season on a lot of levels given the sum of the circumstances. Onward and upward.

Uh - I disagree - it doesn't work like that - and if he's Hughes partner next year, I think the offseason efforts of management came up short - which is not to underplay how nice it was to have him placholding down the stretch this year - but you can't win a job the following season in 18 games of placeholding, when a team is clearly transitioning and looking to remake parts of it's blueline. I think what he earned is another NHL contract - but a job has to be earned when the chips are on the table next fall.

Predicting likelihood like this is a relative fool's game. Will Juolevi and Woo - or other guys in the system - emerge to be the quality of players that Edler and Tanev are? Who knows? "We'll know when we know." But it's not really an issue in the present - when the team still has the rights to both of them, Tanev for another year, and Edler to July 1st - with a pretty explicit statement on his behalf that he wants to stay. So the question/answer has at least some time to unfold before it becomes an issue. I think depending on Tanev's intentions (f he wants to stay, less of an issue) - if he looks to move on, the team could probably get a pretty damn good young RHD in return for him - proposed this a few times already - but if Stralman, Coburn, Girardi walk in free agency, perhaps there's interest from a team like Tampa in a contending window.....

I'd say Pitt and Van did alright on this string of deals - although Pitt arguably lost fairly significantly on their original prices paid for guys like Brassard - if you include what he cost in the chain of deals, the McCann/Bjugstad deal isn't quite as good. Florida and L.A. = not so much. Flipping McCann - and Bjugstad - for a (late round) 2nd, 3rd, pair of 4ths - in the end (after the Brassard for 3rd flip) - isn't great valueon either of them imo. Moving Pearson for Hagelin, who returned a 3rd and 6th - is pretty poor value/return on Pearson imo = L.A. sold low. Depending on the player that Pearson continues to be here, a late 1st, 2nd might not be bad value for him. Then again, I'm not in the anything-to-get-picks camp - and particularly when good NHLer are flipped for longshot, low percentage mid round picks. I'd be happy to 'accumulate' them - but not when it's at the cost of players like Pearson, Gudbranson, McCann, Bjugstad.

[GDT] Nucks @ Blues -- 1PM -- 06/04/19 -- A New New Hope

I knew he was one of my favorites for a reason haha. -
Green knows what he's doing - and why. If Goldobin wants to be a regular in Vancouver, he has next training camp to make his case - assuming he's qualified. He wasn't good enough this year, unfortunately. Part of that was being somewhat snakebitten it seemed, whenever he elected to shoot the puck - he might have lead the NHL in hit posts. But the other part was glaring inconsistency, relative indifference without the puck, with the odd sample of what Goldobin could be if he applied himself with the regularity that it takes to be an NHL regular. And part of the challenge for him is that the team needs certain ingredients from their skilled LWers - that Goldobin wasn't necessarily bringing - a stronger forecheck, a bit harder to play against - so I think that aspect slightly tilts his requirement to capitalize on what he does bring. I wouldn't write him off yet - would probably qualify him and give him one more summer to show up and see if he's grown - but the competition probably isn't going to get any easier, so he's going to need to take bigger strides imo.
