  1. Before SNP - when it was simply Sportspage...those were the days. Before 'analyticz', before smarmies of internet wannabees, before 24/7 cycling of sports highlights... they were the cream of the crop and unfortunately imo never equalled since.
  2. I'm going to exclude 2011 / the Bruins, simply because it's a combination of the intensity of a SCF - and they were particularly obnoxious (The Rat, Colin Campbell, Clod, Jack Edwards = a perfect storm of douchery). A lot of water under the bridge since then. Still no love lost for the Toews / Bolland / Keith crew either - or the Seguin/Benn nonsense (in some ways that duo may still lead the league in smugness/arrogance). It's hard otherwise - the Leafs center-of-the-universe, "Canada's team" (that would rather separate and join the US), #proper-rebuild/Spamaplan = is pretty annoying as well - with their Leaf blower media..too many Damian Cox type wankers to name. On that note I do recall him laughing at the Flames in the offseason, mocking the Dougie HamHam trade, etc.....well, Calgary sits atop the West, 2nd in the NHL, while the Leafs - the self-proclaimed "Stanley Cup favorites" - are 5th/6th in the East, and will be on the road for a first round matchup that could once again end their wonderboy season earlier than they'd anticipated...Ironically, for someone that typically wants to see a Canadian team win in almost any postseason matchup, a large part of me would thoroughly enjoy another Leafs first round exit. But I think if I had to pick a bacon burner, it might be those milkhotdogs in our division in San Jose - from all the diving, to nursing calls endlessly and being spoon-fed powerplays, to the Thornton douche-finger incident....they've got to be in the mix as well. Wouldn't mind seeing the circus in Carolina miss the playoffs as well -but that's less 'personal' than simply not respecting what that franchise has done (ala the new-age Florida Panthers before them).
  3. No worries. Both those players described - have shown why they were getting those 'descriptions.' Go ahead and tell yourself they're imposters if that makes you feel better. Let's recap it (although you seem to be immune to objective outcomes) Lindholm: 27 goals, 51 assists, 78 points, +32 54.1% faceoffs (over 900 draws) 4.0 on ice goals for per game (best on the Flames), 2.7 against. Leading penalty killer among Flames forwards at over 2 minutes/game. 49 takeaways, 81 hits 56.2% ozone starts, 55.3% corsi Ferland in 11 fewer games: 17, 22, 39, +12 Doesn't take draws, (30.6% when he does). 3.3 on ice goals for, 2.2 against. Doesn't kill penalties. 36 takeaways 56.0% ozone starts, 54.4% corsi Precisely half the production of Lindholm, nowhere near as versatile (Lindholm is a high end defensive forward) - and equally as crushing - Ferland is about to walk - while Lindholm will be in Calgary for years, just as he's glimpsing his prime. Too add insult to injury, the only way Carolina could rationalize this part of the deal was in the short-term - where they are getting killed - while Calgary leads the Western Conference, 2nd in the NHL, and Carolina scatches and claws for it's playoff life. Lindholm has outproduced Ferland and Hamilton combined. Hanifin and Hamilton also looking like a definite loss for Carolina. Hanifin 5 goals, 28 assists,33 pts, +18 49.7% ozone starts 52.7% corsi 3.1 on ice goals for per 60, 2.5 against. Hamiliton 16 goals, 19 assists, 35 pts, -3 56.7% ozone starts, 58.1% corsi 2.8 on ice goals for, 2.8 against. Hamilton nearly twice the powerplay minutes. Hanifin 1:43/game penalty killing to Hamilton 15 seconds. Only a Damian Cox level moron (who mocked Calgary for this deal) could look at that and consider Hamilton to be having a better season than the 22 year old Hanifin, who is playing harder minutes, has far better goal metrics, and is far more versatile/able to kill penalites. Clear win again for Calgary. And to add insult to injury, Fox wants no part of Carolina's future. Calgary - in the short term where Carolina was supposed to gain - already got the better two assets out of this deal in year 1. You might want to re-think your player assessments / what makes an 'imposter.' And the ironing.....you love how people jump to conclusions - and then proceed in the next few sentences to jump to a number of wishful thinking conclusions about Lindholm. It doesn't matter what his shooting percentage is Rob, he has 51 assists - you can go ahead and presume 1/3 of his goals are "luck" or high shooting percentage - he'd still have more goals than Ferland. He'd still be a high end faceoff guy - as he always has been - he'd still be a principal penalty killer..... But none of this is 'newnews' - the guy was never an 'imposter'.
  4. Doesn't seem like either of you read this thread. A lot of people in here perceived this as a win for Calgary.
  5. Whatever. If "following the game your way" means making nonsense claims that a player is declining in every conceivable category - then looking at actual statistic might help you "follow the game". If you prefer making up stories that run directly counter to reality - kudos to you. I prefer to look at the player's actual outcomes - which indicate nothing like the story you tell.
  6. This is the kind of rose-goggles thing - where I can't agree and think you could stand to pump the brakes. So try being fair for a minute. If you're watching Schenn as closely as you claim to - you simply can't miss things like the tape to tape pass he made to Giordano that wound up in the back of the net. Or likewise in the Anaheim loss - rifled a pass into EP's skates, in EP's own slot - that also wound up in the back of the net. Last night a near carbon-copy repeat into the skates of EP in front of his own net - didn't wind up in the net - but Schenn struggled to make a first pass in lots of instances throughout the game. Now let's be clear - I'm not being critical of Schenn because I feel he's playing poorly - but two things - if those plays had been made by a Gudbranson, Pouliot or Sbisa, no one would miss or ignore them and proceed to fluff the player endlessly - they'd be whipping boy material. And second, when you have a player like Schenn - a stay-at-home type guy that brings grit - you have to live with some of the weaker parts of their game if you also want their strengths. I like the fact that he's going to stand up for his partner and team-mates - particularly Hughes - I'm glad to see the base embrace a player like this who typically gets hate, but as usual, when people pick favorites and whipping-boys, the level-headed assessments tend to fly by the wayside. There were things that Gudbranson needed to work on - that I've pointed out numerous times on these boards - but if anyone wants to be fair to a player they need to look at the balance - not dwell on particular instances to fuel a confirmation bias. I saw the posts about how great Schenn was in last night's game - and once again - I have to put those in the context of the irony of the 'analytics' contempt for other guys like Gud or Sbisa. Schenn last night had 80% ozone starts (8-2) - a corsi of 31% - outshot by 11 (20-9) ....while playing with a play driving pmd like Hughes. Those are terrible 'underlying numbers' / 'analyticz' by any standard - and don't get me wrong there because I don't particularly care under the circumstances - but they are the kind of numbers that typically earn people whipping-boy distinction / blame for 'holding their partner back' etc - when folks aren't simply looking at something like the hits column. The other thing - I think Schenn's puck moving is adequate for the type of player he is, but to suggest he has a "great first pass"....I'm not sure you're seeing what you might not want to.
  7. ? What? You're completely out to lunch on this. Clearly have not looked at the reality of it - check it out before making absurd claims like "he is a player in decline in every key category". https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/p/pillake01.shtml I'm no fan of the Jays management group, but I'm glad marketing Pillar is not in your hands.
  8. He's a career .260 hitter.... .252 last year with 15 home runs and 59 RBIs (both close to his career average - and that was while missing about 20 games). Maybe baseball isnt' your sport - but you're really embellishing how poor a hitter he allegedly is. I also think you're overstating his fielding 'decline'. His numbers (fielding percentage, errors, putouts, assists - were every bit as good last year as they were in 2016.
  9. Cool. Who said anything about their 'careers'? Try to respond to what was actually said, as opposed to prop up mystery straw. And what you posted isn't really 'stats' - it's merely a mangled scoring line with +/-. I mean really - what do you base your embellished claims on - and where are these "far superior" stats you talk about? Are you talking about a 'career' best 22 pts? Seriously oversimplified. You'll have to come up with more substance yourself to claim "bias" - what I presented is far more in depth, and fairer to both players - we are talking about players in the present here (what Luke Schenn did 8 years ago isn't really relevent, or as impressive as you believe) - the biases would appear to be your own wadr.
  10. I think 'we' won the Schenn, 7th for Del Zotto deal - although some people have complained that Del Zotto was subsequently flipped for a 6th. Personally I could not care less and am every bit as happy with a 7th and an expiring placeholder like Schenn, who imo is probably outperforming what Del Zotto did here this year, which was disappointing, whereas Schenn has exceeded (granted fairly low) expectations. The Pearson for Gud trade - you can lump these in together and call it a win - but to be real, you need to compare what Gud is doing in Pittsburgh to what Pearson is doing here. I've liked what Pearson is bringing: 44.3% ozone starts playing a dual-role on Horvat's line. 51.3% corsi Break even goal metrics 7 pts in 15 games is ok - not great production, but when you consider that line's role, and that all Pearson's points have come 5 on 5, not bad at all. 16:04 minutes/game. Reasonably physical - 20 hits - and 6 takeaways to 3 giveaways. Clearly a good player - one that is a better return than you'd think this team would have gotten if you listened to the cap-dump, untradeable contract blah blah that some bent people threw (shade) at Gudbranson on a regular basis here. But to call this part of the deal a "win" is premature when you haven't looked at the relative performance of Gud in Pitts - not an easy task when you're comparing a shutdown D to a middle six forward. Gud: 43.8% ozone starts 53.6% corsi 2.3 on ice goals for, 1.1 against per 60 5 on 5. 2 pts, +7 in 15 games. 19:21 game 38 hits, 20 blocks Clearly also performing very well there - and not a trade that can be called a "win" at this point. I think the win here is clearly the Schenn, 7th for MDZ deal. While MDZ is the more 'prototypical' modern D - particularly his mobility - it's hard to separate them much 'analytically'. MDZ's season here: 52.7% ozone starts 51.5% corsi 2.5 on ice goals for, 2.7 against per 60 5on5 4 pts in 23 games, +3. 89 hits, 31 blocks 17:57 ice time Schenn 45.5% ozone starts 49.6% corsi 1.6 on ice goals for, 2.9 against per 60 2 pts in 13 games, -4 64 hits, 19 blocks. 14:23 ice time. Looking at that, it's a relative wash imo - but I'd favour the heavier presence of Schenn over MDZ at this point, particularly in the absence of Gudbranson. Comparing Schenn to Gudbranson imo isn't as favourable to Schenn - and doesn't make a lot of sense, but is more about the hangover baggage of people that sandbagged Gud and oddly enough are all of a sudden highly amenable to that kind of player in the lineup. One thing about Schenn - if they could take him to ninja-skate-camp this summer - if there's any way he could improve his quickness/footspeed (he's only 29 and imo this is not an impossibility imo/experience) - he could extend his serviceability in the NHL. I appreciate him but don't want to see a lineup next season where there haven't been upgrades made to spots like his - and will be shocked if that's not the case this offseason. Still though, I think the pick in the Schenn MDZ deal makes that a win for us - but at the same time, MDZ has gone on to be acquired by a playoff team, has 3 pts in 7 games in St Louis (3 in 12 in Anaheim) - so even there, it may be a "win" for us, but relative to what he's doing after moving on, it's not such an easy call. What may be the easiest call is whether the MDZ signing was worthwhile/a win - because in the end, he was serviceable enough and then returned a pick (albeit a late one, it's better than nothing).
  11. The Blue Jays suck. Shapiro sucks. Buzz kill completed. Well done.
  12. If you wholeheartedly concurred, you wouldn't be here, failing to move on lol. you're an ironing goldmine.
  13. That's what I expected. Someone in Pittsburgh said something stupid.... Er, why don't I try some weak manoeuvring to try to make oldnews 'responsible' for that. Hey oldnews, I'm gonna associate you with random posts outta Pittsburgh. Oh snap! Is that the best you've got? You're really just 'substantiating' what I've pointed out throughout this waste of time wadr.
  14. The irony is more 'story' out of you and no substance. Waste of time wadr.
  15. I think you're actually brighter than you appear, but for whatever reason you're not able to apply yourself when it comes to things you get all 'partisan' about. Weak, misrepresented paraphrases are just another example of your surface level of engagement. I never refer to corsi without the context of zone starts, deployment - but carry on in any event - obviously in all your wasted engagement on these matters, you've never bothered to take a second step to knowing what you're talking about. Your last post is the perfect example - in which you substitute your false narrative for facts and reality. Feel free to post some stats - ie ice-time - if you're going to make the absurd claim that he's a '3rd pairing' D in Pittsburgh. Meh - what would the objective outcomes matter? @Toews prefers his shizz-goggles narratives. Feel free to quote something substantive if you want to actually engage in a conversation.
  16. It's a cool story, but doesn't hold up. Last game - he was 3rd on their blueline in icetime - more than DuMoulin and Jack Johnson. Over 20 minutes again for that game, and averaging just under 20. Overall - in his 14 games there he's 4th in ice-time/game - behind DuMoulin, Letang and Schultz. 44.9% ozone starts 54.2% corsi +7 1.2 on ice goals against per 50, 2.5 for. But he's always been mediocre otherwise and you know where he 'belongs'.... I have no idea why you guys insist on the crap-goggles, but it's odd to say the least. I guess it's just an ego thing - once you've written a player off, of course, their performance apparently has less say in the matter than your word
  17. Maybe Fox just has the good sense not to want to be any part of that circus on ice that the Canes ham up at every opportunity.
  18. Real potential to be the worst deal in Canes history if this turns out to be the case. Lindholm and Hanifin for Hamilton, a year rental of Ferland, and a prospect that walks. Didn't look good from the get-go imo - but just gets worse and worse as Lindholm breaks out and Hanifin outperforms Dougeeee.
  19. Trade Demko for Puljujaarvi. Claim Luo off waivers from Florida. Backup. Markstrom Luongo Cup. /s
  20. If you remember that much, then you should probably also remember Tallon losing his job right after that 100+ point season and playoff birth....as well as Gerard Gallant. Followed by a pseudo-'analyticz' gongshow that set the franchise backwards for years. Not really on Tallon.
  21. Mickey Mouse attempt to punish franchises - after the NHL themselves approved those contracts at the time. Even more absurd - the Canucks of the next few years are virtually unrelated to the Luongo era Canucks that may have benefitted from something a whole gaggle of teams were doing at the time - one or two players from that time might remain with the team when this penalty is supposed to apply, alongside entirely new coaching and management staffs. Bush league NHL failing to find an appropriate, reasonable resolution.
  22. What I find comical is the relative embrace of Luke Schenn - who I like and appreciate - but let's be real - he makes Gudbranson look like the roadrunner - and brings about half the intimidation factor.
  23. I she aint happy, who cares? She's a miserable thing, regardless. There's no making that "happy". And I'm a citizen, not a subject. Canada would do well to learn the difference.
  24. You and I perceive 'accidentally' differently, however. You guys tend to frame it as incompetence - as if management believe they can contend, but fail hopelessly. That's not my take - at all. Where we are on the same page is not considering the short term results to be particularly important. For me, though, there's a point at which the Buffalos, Edmontons and Torontos make a mockery of the integrity of the league. The logical consequence of those approaches - is that people should not buy tickets to their tank games. Obvious contradiction between competitive, professional sports - and lining up for affirmative-action draft position handouts. When GMs like Tim Murray are crying on television because their tank fail resulted in a mere 2nd overall - the league is on the cusp of bush. I would distinguish that from what Benning has done. In previous seasons, he may have left their depth a little sparse and took a calculated risk that key injuries would have fairly deep-running results. This season, that is less the case - probably in part due to the serious intention to make sure they have the complementary players to enable EP et al - whereas the past few years, hanging the Sedins or other placeholders out to dry - not so much an issue. Heading into this deadline however, without players like Tanev, Sutter, Baertschi, Roussel, etc - fair enough to make a move like the Gudbranson one that thins out your blueline in the shorter run - but enables them to play guys like Sautner, Brisebois. I may not be a big fan of the move, but I'm not going to characterize it in the same vein as the shameless tankshows, under considerably different conditions, carried out by some of the weakest GMs in the business.
