That's a good list to look at as an example of how misinformed the opinion is that "a 1st" is necessarily a great return on a player like Muzzin - or Tanev. There is one player in that list that is a good return on Muzzin, maybe one other that is possibly a good principal, but still only partial value. And that is typical of a late 1st in drafts. People love to tell themselves that a late 1st = a Pastrnak or a Boeser - but the reality is that for the other 6 of those 7 teams that late 1st turns out to be quite a disappointing principal in the end. The value of a pick is the median/mean value - not some fantasy outlier. And the same principal should be applied to people that still whine about 'missing out' on Pastrnak. Benning followed that draft by landing Boeser in that range - and converted McCann into a principal for Gudbranson, so his batting average is misleading people to grossly over-value picks in that range. L.A. got a 20-25-30% chance of drafting a good player, and lesser odds imo of drafting an equivalent value to what they gave up. Add to that a couple other longshots and their odds are still not a great risk. One mitigator is that they may feel they can better assess Grundstrom with the benefit of draft plus years to assess, but still, he'd need to become an NHL top 6 to begin (and is still a less valuable winger) to approach comparable value to Muzzin.

yeah - a couple key acquisitions - particularly to a bluleine, can really change the complexion of a team. look closer to home - how does this team fare in the absence of Edler and/or Tanev? I forces a number of guys to play above their calling. The Leafs finally appear to have gotten over their habit of adding an inadequate depth forward rental at the deadline. I've been ripping them for years for bizarre moves that don't address their needs. This is on track with what they've needed to do for some time imo.

This is a 22-23 minute defenseman for the past five years. One with really good 'possession' numbers, goal metrics, grit.... 20th in Norris running a couple years ago. A Stanley Cup for experience. Welcome to market value imo, and the lower end of it. Why do people believe this is a heavy price? From my viewpoint, I don't see a principal worth Muzzin in this deal.

I can't agree with you at all here. First, this is exactly the kind of deal the Leafs needed to make. I'm surprised they managed to upgrade their blueline this signficantly without moving one of their better assets - this is volume of relative longshots they've given up. I won't be surprised if the Leafs don't "dramatically move up in the draft". This is one of a few key moves that could rebalance their lineup nicely - without having had to spend assets most of us thought they'd have to put on the table. I think it's a win for them = and if they manage another move like this I won't be counting them out. They just have to hope this doesn't poke the Lightning.

His 5 on 5 numbers are better than Poughty's. Meaning he's actually more effective without DD. DD feasts on the powerplay - literally all 5 of his goals are on the man advantage and 10 of his 22 assists - more than half his production on the man advantage. At 5 on 5 Doughty's on ice goals for is 1.7 per 60 (anemic), goals against is 2.4. Muzzin is 2.8 and 2.0. DD's corsi is 48.1% with 48.2% ozone starts. Muzzins are 50.5 corsi with 43% ozone starts. Muzzin also leads that team in hits and blocks.... I like the move for the Leafs = long overdue but better late than never.

Good deal for Toronto imo - although a LHD when they could probably use a RHD more.... Not sure I'd be thrilled with that return if I were a Kings fan - a late 1st and a couple B prospects.... There's no principal there that I'd move a Muzzin for, particularly with a year of term left at a reasonable cap hit.

You could probably say the same about Horvat as a rookie. Listen and learn - that's what future captains do imo as young players - very few are ready to lead in the dressing room or on the ice at that point. Pettersson doesn't need to say a lot imo - he plays 'angry' = his drive is his leadership by example at this point - and I imagine that the more command over the language he develops and more footing he gets in the league, he'll probably be a candidate for captaincy. At the same time, Horvat is consistently growing his game to where he's now capable of handling quantity of hard minutes - and producing at the same time = plays the game at both ends of the ice like you want a captain to. So the team has a nice problem - of wealth of young leadership imo. I'd consider Motte another guy that approaches the game with leadership qualities - may not be a 'top 6' but no one competes harder or with more consistency - and he's also only Horvat's age. The emerging young core looks rich in character imo.

[Report] Avs' Nikita Zadorov on the trade market ?

There's a grain of truth to all that imo - he was out of shape, he wasn't happy not playing, and he did make some comments in departing that weren't flattering. At the same time, he was 22 years old. Everything was filtered through an interpreter, and he's a proud young guy that wants to play - but needed a bit of a reality check. It is his prerogative if he'd prefer the KHL over the AHL - that part is understandable imo. And while I think it has to be expected that every player come in in shape and maintain professional fitness levels, by all accounts he busted his ass when he was given that unofficial 'conditioning stint' when he first arrived here. There were times through the season where it was clear he was sucking wind in long shifts - I understand why WD limited his ice time - so I think he was treated fairly. But I'm not going to hold that against him. He'll mature, he's interested in returning - he's just far too rare a player to not give another chance. He has incredible reach and mobility, a heavy shot - all he really needs to do is improve on his endurance, which for a guy his size takes time imo - it's natural for it to be harder to gain the kind of conditioning that comes easier to smaller guys. -

Colorado 1st is presently in the 12-15 range - that proposal didn't suggest trading Ott 2019. Maybe they wouldn't, maybe they would deal their own 1st.... But if Colorado did want to make haste, Stone is probably a pretty good fit for them. They have Rantanen - and then Compher, Calvert and Bourque at RW.....they could stand to add a RW like Stone to their top 6. I think that's an interesting proposal that could be of interest to both teams.... -

the sources that contradict what you're saying - I suspect they're better than the ones you're relying on. "I asked Volkov if Tryamkin will ever return to Vancouver, " He talks about it, he wants to go back someday. He will give it 1 more shot when he's ready." #Canucks -

I wouldn't pay any attention to either. There's a gaggle of wankers in this market that love to pretend that their own speculative bullshizz constitutes a source. Ie last game the talking heads in the market were reporting a healthy scratch of Virtanen. Media projections/manipulation - while when asked about it Green clearly stated that it was bullcrap that they themselves had fabricated. Virtuzzi appears to be whipping boy flavour of the week - don't be surprised to hear all kinds of media-driven trollery. That said, Zadorov is a young beast that most teams should/would be interested in - and if you can deal a winger for a young top 4 type guy like him, most GMs look at that opportunity. Personally I'd try other options, but I wouldn't be against an acquisition like Zadorov, that's for sure. Perhaps Hutton and Goldobin....lol. Edler Tanev Zadorov Stecher / Pouliot Gubranson It would be interesting to see how Stecher might benefit playing with a beast like Zadorov. -

A bit surprising that they'd look to move him. 43.4% ozone starts, 47.3% corsi last year 20 pts - 19 of them even strength 278 hits, 106 blocks. Just under 20 minutes a game.... At 22 yrs old, that's a hard player to give up imo. His numbers have tailed off somewhat this year, playing with Patrick Nemeth (last year with Johnson and Barrie).... Perhaps it's largely an issue of the terms he'll command on July 1st as an RFA...or that they don't feel they need a young shutdown D...? Not the first guy I'd expect them to move. -

Zadorov is a LHD - as is Tryamkin - Gud is a RHD. -
I disagree - fundamentally - with the constant attempts to milk merchandise with new looks. Stop messing with identity - which is what sports franchises are abstracted upon. Take the 'real' franchises - Montreal, Boston, Detroit, etc - do they pull these kinds of marketing stunts? I think this is marketeers outsmarting themselves in the end.

I'm not sure I agree that Calgary needs to make a goaltending move. When you have a guy that is 14-4, .921 sv % you run with it until proven otherwise. If it aint broke, don't 'fix' it. Rittich has never 'proven' unable, so as long as he's performing, I wouldn't assume he will. And Smith may have struggled early this year - but he's never been this bad in his entire career, so at worst I'd expect somewhat of a bounce back from him or at the very least, a very experienced and proven "backup', albeit an expensive one.....but he's also expiring. You just never know with goaltenders.....(tbh I thought Gillies would be better than he's been).

Lindholm tracking on a 92 pt season. 48 pts in 43 games. +25 54.6% faceoffs - 2nd in faceoff wins to Backlund. +10 turnover differential. 4.8 on ice goals per 60 leads the Flames = unreal production with him at 5 on 5. By comparison, Pettersson is outstanding.....at 3.8. Leads the Flames forwards in penalty killing ice time. And then there is Hanifin...who is literally punking Dougie Hamilton. Hanifin 23 pts, +7 Hamilton 13 pts, -13, in easier minutes... Hamilton with 2.2 on ice goals for per 60....with 58% ozone starts = anemic play-driving for a "#1D" / "top 5 NHL D" / analyticz superztar.

Mine hasn't. I still think he's going to be better than Kesler. But no pressure lol.
