"Lol." There was no "out of necessity" need to use Linholm at center - the absolute opposite was the case. Carolina had two other outstanding faceoff guys - Staal at 56.6% and Ryan at 56.5% - actually four other solid faceoff guys - otherwise Lindholm likely would have taken even more draws. In fact, Victor Rask was also 54.9% and took over 700 draws. Marcus Kruger played a half season and was 55.4%. Few teams could as easily afford to move Lindholm to wing and have that many quality faceoff guys in any event - and yet Lindholm was 3rd in that group. Fact is, he was and is a center and he instantly becomes the best faceoff guy on the Flames. Horvat was the 1C last year. Of course he took more draws. 800 is still very significant - middle six center volume of draws. Regardless of where Calgary plays him, he has the versatility of a natural center with the two way game and strength in the dot to be an excellent option there for them.

Dundon on SN - apparently Carolina has "won the summer" lol. No. They won a lottery pick. Otherwise, have their management moves really earned them the hype? I don't like the fact they were willing to lose Ron Francis. Their coach also walked - and just took a couple key young assets with him in this trade. They're making a lot of public statements to the effect of 'wake-up' calls to their players - which always goes over well. I think they've gotten extremely fortunate to have Svechnikov land there - otherwise, the previous group build a good group of young players and had them on every bit the trajectory they're now on. Not a fan of a group like this stepping in, making pretenses to remake a franchise like that. The previous group deserves credit, particularly for great drafting - and some great development - when you look at the young, homegrown defensemen and solid group of talented forwards, many of both drafted well below their trajectories.

He took 793 draws last year and won 54.5% of them so, not classifying him as a center is not accurate - only two other Canes took more draws. Whether Calgary elects to use him as a RW may be an option - but Calgary's top three centers last year were Monahan at 50.4%, Backlund at 50.0% and Jankowski at 48.8%.... So Lindholm is actually the strongest faceoff guy they have.

Just listening (no idea why) to HC@noon and the Leafs blowers - Damian Cox - wondering what Calgary is doing? My favorite question out of Toronto, the self-styled #proper-build market ever since they won a draft lottery lol. Probably the leafst informed hockey market in the country, hands down. Apparently if you listen to 'analyticz guys', Cox says that Hamilton is a top 5 D in the NHL. Love these phantom references to mystery numbers that make players like this so much better than people realize. But the actual numbers? Not as abundant as the references to them. Still waiting to see these 'underlying' numbers that make Hamilton 'all that'. Wadr to him, he wasn't even the best defenseman on the Calgary Flames - that was Giordano - hands down - by a longshot, let alone top 5 in the NHL. Love the ironing of a Leaf-blower like Cox wondering what Calgary is doing..... Why aren't they signing all the 35+ yr olds?

maybe you're just seeing this through crapgoggles as a result. plus/minus gobbledygook. Most NHL D would be plus players beside Mark Giordano (or Chara) with tailored minutes to boot. Carolina is fortunate enough to likewise be able to prop up Hamilton, but that doesn't change his impact without the puck. Crap happens Alf. Tampa misses the playoffs one year, to the ECF the next Snottawa goes to the ECF one year, to the lottery patch next. Colorado...... Etc. Expecing the Lames to be mediocre might be wishful thinking. They have a bit of a paper tiger in the works - won't be surprised if it rebounds.

Many thanks for your time @thejazz97

I think you're going to be disappointed this coming season Alf. And I wouldn't bank on that google-scouting of yours either. The fact you refer to Hanifin (at 21 - with 239 NHL games of experience already - and 83 NHL pts - nearly as many as 25 yr old winger Ferland) and a 23 yr old like Lindholm who has been a .5 ppg player through 374 NHL games as a player that stepped straight out of the draft and into the NHL (on not a particularly good hockey team) - that you refer to these guys as 'stalled' is entertaining - but we'll see what they actually look like now that you're going to see them frequently in our division. Consider that fact that their previous coach just played an undoubtedly significant role in acquiring them - and I'd be leaning towards Peters take over the poopooing that is going on in this thread. I get it - we love to rip the Lames - they are rivals - it's fun to trash talk them - but if we're actually talking hockey here (and saving our troll energy for the appropriate target - the Leafs) - then the Lindholm aspect of this deal is a huge win for the Lames. I personally would have dealt Hamilton for Hanifin straight up - not a fan of Hamilton and happy to see Calgary recovered reasonable value considering what they gave up - and the Lindholm part of this deal is an absolute no-brainer imo. The fact that Calgary added a RH faceoff guy to their mix - who was 54.5%, 55.6% the year before - solid producer - penalty killer - 48 takeaways last year, 57 the year before - throws 100 hits a year, is versatile, top 6 RW option (although somewhat a waste to have a player like this on the wing) - they needed that.... I'd be absolutely stoked if I were a Lames fan tbh. They are one of only three Canadian teams that are not a complete tire fire. Go Canucks Go Jets Go Lames Leafs suck.

I'm always a big fan of non-hockey people / owners overstepping their GMs, Presidents, etc and making themselves the public / managing face of their franchise. (how does on indicate sarcasm?) Won't be surrpises in the least if there is a steady migration out of Carolina. That said I find it telling that Calgary and Peters went out and acquired both Hanifin and Lindholm - a pretty good indcation of what Peters thinks of both those players and pretty much a refutation of the idea that Hanifin is considered to have 'stalled', etc.
-
? not sure what that means, or is supposed to, tbh. there is literally nothing particularly 'analytical' about what Carolina just did. nothing. nothing special whatsoever about Ferland's 'analytics' ie underlying numbers nothing special about Hamilton either, particularly when you look at the type of possession player Giordano (his partner) is and has been. Nothing in the 'advanced stats' to suggest that Lindholm and Hanifin aren't comparable 'possession' players.

pretty sure Peca was a skinny shrimp when he was drafted as well.

I don't like the logic of teams that believe they can "afford" to make moves like this because of their other D prospects. Not a huge loss does not compute imo. I'm also not a fan of characterizations of players that reduce to a singular impression Ie. that they disappear when hitting occurs. That's said about players like Kane as well, with some truth, but does their skill truly 'disappear"? Lindholm has sure produced enough in between these vacations, right. The guy is a 54.5% faceoff guy, penalty killer, perenial 40-45pt player at a very young age - I'd be looking for outlier points to devalue him as well if I just dealt him for a less skilled, less versatile player.
-
Understandably. I hate to put it this way, but I think Carolina just gave up a couple potential decade pieces from their future (perhaps Lindholm 'only' 7 or 8 years). Whereas they acquired an expiring contract, and a contract in his prime (Hamilton). I thought the prerogative of Carolina was to get 'better' players in the shorter term. I don't agree that they've done that here. - I think they'll be fortunate if they break even in the short term and don't like the longer term implications - it's a lot of risk on Fox imo.

Felrand is a very effective forechecker - at the same time, he plays the game with the kind of edge that is highly risky. I think people around here may have the memory of a player wreaking havoc on Bieksa et al in the playoffs, but may not have watched the following series where he was literally invisible. That kind of constant banging takes a toll. I really hope his career isn't abbreviated as a result, but I would take the 'risk' on a Lindholm anyday - he's a 40+ pt player as a 19,20,21,22 and 23 year old in the NHL... Big mistake imo to let go of him at this stage - a very good two way center, who wins draws and produces at a 2nd line rate through his early career. I wouldn't consider losing Hamilton to make them easier to play against - if anything, I'd take Hanifin and consider his development as a 21 yr old to be in progress. People believing he's stalled, or a bust are getting way out ahead of themselves imo. I won't miss Ferland but I'd rather face the Lames yesterday than tomorrow in spite of that. They got more mobile on the back end, and more skilled up front imo. Time will tell. I'm not a fan of Carolina's decision to prematurely sell on these players. I think they're going to regret it and will find themselves banking on Fox. I also don't like the fact that Ferland is a UFA next summer....that and Fox being unsigned is risky.
-
if 41 pts is more than 44, then that's a yes. otherwise, the 23 yr old Lindholm has 188 NHL pts, 25 yr old Ferland 89. I know which guy I'd be betting on to sustain and improve on those numbers. I like Ferland, but.... he's also a UFA in a year..... Hard to slice this in any way favourable to Carolina that doesn't translate into "truculence"

not that bad a draft day for Calgary in the end. I realize it's just draft 'pedigree' but they get younger, more skilled, more balanced, and in the process add a pair of recent top 5 picks that have not yet reached their potential. i'd want more than Hamilton, Ferland and an unsigned college prospect for that. Fox has upticked, but he also didn't improve on his freshman production. Glad to see Treliving pull this off. And their 4th round pick (Roman) was a pretty good one as well imo.

https://frozenpool.dobbersports.com/players/Elias-Lindholm 35 of Lindholm's 44 points were 5 on 5. Great faceoff guy (54.5%) Was also 4th among Canes forwards in penatly killing ice time. Very good, two way, highly talented young center that is bound to get better. Really don't like this aspect of the deal for Carolina. The Flames on the other hand add Lindholm to a center group with Monahan, Backlund......Jankowski, Stajan.... I'm looking forward to how this pans out for Calgary.
