  1. yes - there's a dual thing there for sure. one being the idea that he's already 'all that' - he's entering his prime - he and a few other 'stars' are carrying, and will carry the team. our job is to star-gaze and tear the rest of the team apart - it's all the 'fault' of overpaid bottom 6, etc.... the other being that the 'real' Hughes was 'exposed' this year - ermagerd, look at that pluz/minuz...he's one of the worst defensive D in the leaguez - let's deal the kid now - get a 'real D' - (and by extension, before we're stuck with him and a big contract....) He's 21. Let's, instead, be real. He's both 'great' - and has real limits - tons of talent, and will need time to round out various aspects of his game. Does he have the intelligence and work ethic to improve - ? I think he does - but I'm not from the future - so I limit my assessment to what has gotten him to this point.
  2. Don't waste too much time - after having researched various specific aspects/factors of context that you're wanting to discuss - while aside from questions of methodology, have had no real engagement with the data you raise - but are expected to respond to "but but every year it's excuses...it's simple - the roster is bad, the system are bad"... Seriously - you're wasting your time responding to a notorious precooked narrative. The irony is that while you are attempting to present relatively 'objective' data, you have people attempting to cancel it with uninformed one-liners about 'systems' they can't name / have little idea of what they're talking about. I'd add to the factors that you and others have noted - in addition to the schedule, or key new veterans like Schmidt, Hamonic, stepping into 'foundation' roles on the blueline - losses of key players like EP, or even the effects of the outbreak (I mean the team had 10+ replacement players/waiver claims/rookies/AHL callups in their lineup post outbreak) - regardless of having pulled themselve back to striking distance before that outbreak - back up to .500 hockey after a horrendous start - that outbreak sealed any hopes of sustaining any kind of push for a playoff spot imo. But in addition to that - I think another key factor = advantage/disadvantage to this season - was the demographic makeup of teams and their ability to step into arguably underprepared situations. I expected the team to have real difficulties with the nature of this season - outbreak or not - because they are such a young 'core' group. It's one thing to parachute into a season like this with a veteran team - it's another to enter into these conditions with a very young emerging core. A lot of people in this market perceive these guys to be entering their "primes" - that's a youth culture take that doesn't realize how typical contenders are composed. Veterans have years of NHL experience - they are at the peaks of their strength, conditioning - they have years of executing NHL systems under their belt - in lots of cases they have years of experience playing with their particular team-mates....Circumstances like this season - are not necessarily as challenging for more veteran groups. Where the specific bubble conditions of last year's post-season imo were conducive to the young group - under 'normal' circumstances they would not have been rested before the playoffs after the work of a regular season - they would have been entering playoffs at the end of a long grind - and imo that would have been more challenging - physically and mentally - than it was. Those conditions imo were more conducive to their bubble success - as a young group. The conditions this year imo are the counterpoint / not conducive to young groups - and I think we saw a general trend qualifying that - from other young teams that struggled a whole lot early in the season..... In any event - good points that you make - interesting data and discussion - and I agree with in general with what you're getting at - not because I need to 'deny' the results this season - but because in literally every case, in any situation, it is necessary to assess as much of the context as possible if there is any hope at all of being 'realistic' / whether that's positive or negative.
  3. as opposed to whatever you are. Canucks fans would be correct, WSH fans would be running to the bank to cash in lol. If you don't want people to messyou, then...might want to hold off on the #facepalm proposals. but yes, that was fun, thanks
  4. I'll say it - he's not worth his contract. His quote - believing he was 'phenomenal' this year - is good stuff. He had an anemic 15 even strength points this season. Tyler Myers outproduced him at es. He played nearly 21 minutes of 5 on 5 hockey/game. 2.1 on ice goals for per 60 5on5 - is terrible for an $11 million pmd. you've gotta hand it to him - he has insular levels of self-regard But topping it off with his thing for blowing head gaskets.... If he were moveable - they should - move him. I mean - 6 more years of Doughty at 11 million? Hard pass.
  5. missed this news. expected this news. his second consecutive complete tire fire. will he find yet another taker?
  6. anyhow - here's hoping the real Leafs show up for the rest of this series. Manny Malhotra seems to have hijacked that franchise. Take a time out, Manny.
  7. Wheeler is a bit of a hard/odd read - he's inconsistent. He's actually 3rd among Jets forwards in blocked shots - and 3rd on that team in takeaways. But he also has pretty poor 'possession' numbers - poor goal metrics as well - gives up a lot 5 on 5....I He can sure be a force when he's driven - with that north/south power game and nose for the net - but he's a bit of an 'upright' player / not always that 'dug in' (not sure how to describe him) - they'll need him to be more consistent imo like he was in the Coil series.
  8. I don't think the city of Toronto could handle that. That would be something to witness (again).
  9. The hyperbole is always entertaining KHeffy. But Nylander.... 1) was 4th on the Leafs in takeaways - not easy to do when you're on a tourist visa 2) his on ice goals against 5 on 5 (2.0 per 60) is among the best of Leafs forwards (a few two way guys like Hyman, Mikheyev were lower..) 3) his on ice sv% was a pretty respectable .920.... He's certainly not going to get any grit points - never hits anyone and rarely blocks a shot - and a fair amount of his positive outcomes have to be co-credited to Tavares, but the numbers don't really suggest that he's floating and hurting his team....
  10. he's not that bad defensively - when he's not jumping out of the way of shots haha. But credit to him - he's scoring without Tavares in the lineup - if anyone might have been expected to 'disappear' when Tavares went down, he'd be a good candidate. He's had a bit of puck luck for sure as well - seeing eye goals, deflections of D - but it is what it is - he's producing.
  11. Nothing to lose now for the Habs. And nothing better than a Leafs playoff collapse. At least there's still that possibility lol.
  12. I think a learning Romanov is still better than Merrill....by a margin....but I'm not accountable for losses, so I can't pretend to know what they 'should do' with their roster. I guess they don't want to overdo the youth in the lineup in the playoffs - but again, if you're going with 20, 21 yr old centers, a rookie Caufield, maybe one Romanov doesn't break the camel's back - maybe it does. And there is the point of getting him some experience / imo he's probably a future fixture on that blueline. But whatever. Maybe in game 5. They're not playing assertive enough hockey - at least you can count on Romanov to step up.
  13. yeah - can't recall Weber really letting it rip this series. Imo if they're going to roll with 20, 21 year old centers - they may as well play Romanov (and Caufield). either that or complete the thought and add a veteran top 6 center.... They have a great future - but at the same time - Price, Weber and Petry are 33, 35, 33...
  14. curious why the Habs haven't played Romanov. For me - he's their #5. Is he not healthy?
  15. maybe we need to talk some trash about Toffoli. perhaps that will get him going. some disrespect from Vancouver. seems to be the only thing that lights a fire under him.
  16. I have no doubt they can be every bit as awful as Leafs fans. some of them are certainly horrible to Habs players. but it's much easier to tune out than TSN, CBC, and RogersLeafsNet.
  17. the funniest part of the Leaf script thus far - is how easily they slip from the idea of winning a series, into winning the Cup - almost as though they are logical equivalencies. understandable I suppose when they've never won a series... but they might want to have a look at some of the teams still remaining in the playoffs.
  18. Life as a Leafs homer. We're about to win our 3rd game in a series!! Matching our high water mark...since....forever! Woot woot! START THE CAR!!
  19. the two non-calls weren't as bad as that pansy foul they did call on Chiarot for touching McMatthews.
  20. we're happy for you that you've taken the first step. good luck with the rest of your recovery.
  21. we never have to listen to them though - they're not the center of the universe - TSN and SN don't fluff them endlessly - and they don't speak broken english like Tranna
