The lack of secondary scoring is so glaring...
oldnews replied to Lui's Knob's topic in Canucks Talk
With all due respect, when Gillis was hired the Canucks (88 points) had just finished 27 points behind the Redwings and last in the Northwest, while Detroit (115 points) finished first in the Western Conference. Gillis' first year here, the team closed the gap - the Canucks won the NW, finished with 100 points while Detroit finished 2nd in the West with 112 pts. Vancouver has finished ahead of Detroit the past four seasons....Detroit has not made it past the Conference semifinals in those four years - a first round and three second round losses. Holland is a great GM, but being insulted by Gillis' respect for and attempt to emulate their system would be kind of daft. Look at is however you want, but Gillis inherited a much weaker team, one that has leapfrogged the Redwings. -

For me, it's not really the quantity of games, it's the lack of quality of the coverage that is the issue. As for TSN, don't care for them much either, but what I do prefer is their pbp (Cuthbert and Miller are ok) and colour guys (I also like Ferraro and McGuire). They have a few Duds as well lol. What I really don't care for are their [Leafs] "Insiders". When it comes to Dreger et al prattling, I opt for the mute button, but I don't mind the actual game coverage. Thankfully we have Don Taylor, John Shorthouse and John Garrett - who, although they have a legitimate and open kinship with the home team - SNP is a regional network after all - are nevertheless able to acknowledge the quality of the opponents, and aren't wearing blinders when the Canucks lay an egg. I've attempted many times to watch CBC coverage with my internet radio audio, but unfortunately it isn't in sync...

The less I have to listen to PJ Stock, Kelly Hrudey, Ron McLean, Don Cherry, etc, the better. HNIC is like one of those reality tv shows where washed up stars who haven't had a gig in a decade jump at the opportunity to embarrass themselves. Even the opening song sucks now. Suck it CBC.

https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=aFbvulexwUY I think folks are slightly exaggerating White's 'softness' - there's more grit to this guy than is being suggested here - he's certainly not a bruising blueliner, but he's also not a shrinking violet - and he's also blocked 100-150 shots a season - which would have put him neck and neck with Edler for the Canuck's leader...
-
I have always liked White - and I think he'd be a nice addition. I think people are underestimating him a little - he may not be a big guy, but he has shown a fair amount of grit in his career, and he's also been a pretty good shot blocker - a pretty good balance to his game imo. I also think he turned out to be the best player in the infamous Phaneuf deal hahaha His numbers may not have been as strong last year as the year before, but whose numbers wouldn't tail off under the circumstances - White went from playing 59% of his ev strength ice time with Lidstrom, to being somewhat overlooked in favour of youth like Smith, Quincey and DeKeyser. But White wasn't the only blueliner in Detroit who didn't look that impressive last year... I also like White's perspective....his comments regarding Bettman..."I personally think he's an idiot"...probably didn't go over that well with the likes of Devallano, who refered to players as "cattle", and quite possibly reserved a stall for White in the next boxcar out of Detroit... He's a hard worker, I'd bet he'd like the opportunity to prove himself once again on a solid team and he's still only 29, although he seems older because he's moved around so frequently - he could be a really nice guy to add to the mix and he has a certain element of intangibility - I'd be happy with White, and/or Hainsey and/or Alberts...

- for all the people who have formed a judgement of Tanev or Gilis on this particular negotiation - knowing literally next to nothing about the position of either... ....but why wait for substance when you can form an opinion on assumptions? So far we know: 1) Tanev wants to remain a Canuck - would like to get a deal done. 2) Tanev did not have an agent, his Dad is not an agent, and therefore he hired one. 3) Europe has shown some interest in Tanev. 4) Gillis/Gilman would like to re-sign Tanev. 5) The sides have yet to come to terms. Therefore: Trade Tanev! and/or Fire Gillis!

In other words, you're just blowing a bunch of premature hot air. Add to what no one knows Tanev's actual value in the future... some people like yourself pretend to know the limits of his potential, but that's arrogance. If he were to sign something like a 1.3, 1.8. 2.3, deal with an average cap hit of 1.8, I can just imagine the endless whining and doomsdaying about overpaying for Tanev, and yet, what you and no one really knows is what his value will be in two years, three years - he could be worth a 4 million cap hit, and like Burrows, be one of the premier value cap hits in the NHL. Or he could be a players who is worth 1.5 million, and the whining will nevertheless reach epic proportions. If you spent a fraction of the energy recognizing the very good value cap hits on the roster, it wouldn't be so tedious.

Dramatic Wallstreet. Surprise - Wallstreet is forecasting a potentially huge mistake to be made by Canucks management....But regarding your question, I don't expect them to say anything other than what's being said - which is why my tone is notably different than the heightened anxiety posted in response to a mundane rumour - I'm not the one over-reacting to it.
-
Nice to see something to feed the appetite for drama on CDC... And it doesn't take much... agent mentions that there's interest from 2 KHL teams and another in the Swiss Elite League...but it's also quite obvious he's just doing his job of squeeking the wheel to expedite the process of getting something done http://www.vancouversun.com/sports/Chris+Tanev+draws+interest+talks+with+Canucks+stall/8780257/story.html "Gurney said Tanev is open to a short- or long-term contract with the Canucks. “Chris is open to anything and that is what makes the process relatively easy on our part,” he said. “If it’s one year, I think Chris is prepared to play it like that. If it’s multi-year, obviously there is then the benefit of security.” Canucks assistant general manager Laurence Gilman said Monday that the team remains confident a deal will be reached with Tanev. “We have not had discussions for a couple of weeks,” Gilman said. “Chris is a valued member of our organization. There is still a reasonable amount of time before our season and our training camp begins and we are optimistic that we will get something done.” Gurney stressed, however, that Tanev very much wants to remain a Canuck. "Chris’s full intentions are to sign with Vancouver and we felt we had some momentum so that is a bit discouraging. Vancouver controls the timeline.” The potential here, for either side, to make a 'huge mistake'.....is overplayed.

I agree with you here - Wallstreet obviously has a keen intellect - but he is so committed to a 'story' that it blurs his perspective imo and comes across like idelogical thinking - always trying to hammer a circle into a square regardless of context - and that degrades the intellect into a mindless "schpeel" that is hard to take seriously.
-
As usual Wallstreet, you give yourself too much credit. I can't be bothered to follow your sad act around - it's simply the case that you spread this weak spin around so freely that it's all over the place. If you don't want it called what it is, try curbing your penchant for ridiculous, context-free failures /'criticisms' - you're not the superior intellect to Gillis that you pretend to be. Don't see any examples to qualify your nonsense comments about overpaying fourth line plugs - and where exactly are the NTCs he handed out to these fourth line plugs? Higgins isn't a fourth line plug (he's a 40 point third liner - which actually makes him an elite third liner/good second line production - without 2nd line minutes) - although I realize that keeping things in context isn't something you do - that would force you to remain somewhat accountable to your comments, ironically. Accountable - one of your favorite keywords that you like to throw around in your endless pretenses to know better than Canucks management.
-
Of course, it's Wallstreet talking, so slanted embellishments and a lack of context are to be expected. The 'plug' 4th liners on the roster are both signed at 750k (huge overpayments haha) , Santorelli is 550k, while Weber and Corrado, the depth defensemen signed at this point, are 650 and 599k. I imagine you're still going on about Ballard, as if the intention when he was signed was to put him on the third pairing and for him to struggle and get injured repeatedly, cause Gillis just loves to overpay those depth plugs.

(Article)NHL goalie rankings: Is Luongo still elite?
oldnews replied to naslund.is.king's topic in Canucks Talk
You're the "idiot" with the reading comprehension problem who completely misunderstood my post and is too quick to throw insults like that around. My point was "where is Schneider"? He belongs in the discussion, at the very least in the 'on the rise' category. I'm fully aware of what he's worth and why the Devils gave up a top 10 pick for him - I'm also not pleased in the least that he was dealt. Starting every post with "idiot" by the way, doesn't exactly distinguish you from one. -

No, not because you posted it - I have no idea who you really are - my point was that while I don't care for the article (and would rate it poorly), you on the other hand backed up Luo at the end of it... -

Tough thread to rate. 1 star for the article. But the OP would seem to disagree... -

Nope. Ramo, Bishop, Bernier... not starters yet either. No mention of guys like Reimer... Just dumb omissions on his part imo. -

Find two things about this 'ranking' funny. First is the 'can Luongo still do it' slant, while he's clearly every bit as reliable as 'reliable vets'. Second, where is Schneider? As a sidenote to 'reliable vet' Brodeur? Not even 'on the rise'... Meh. Don't think much of this guy's perspective. -
