I'm not sure they're forgetting anything. I think it's more the case of not knowing what they're talking about in the first place - and the Vancouver media certainly sets the standard in that respect. -

I can't see Gillis going into this year's meeting and hoping to convince them again that he'd be returning and bringing back the same coaching staff - even if that were what he'd have preferred. That wasn't going to sell unless that was ownership's own position. I have no doubt that Gillis realized that, consented/wasn't in a position of strength to be defending his coach, and realized he'd have to do something proactive. -

My comment really has nothing to do with considering Gillis an unintelligent man. Last year would have been too premature to be blaming AV for the first round loss - if they fired him last year then, regardless of the options available. I could not possibly have agreed with the move. At this point it's hard to argue with. Anyhow, it's unfortunate that last year the Habs were looking for a coach - and in all likelihood courting AV - while AV chose to return - and missed out on that opportunity. -

Sounds believable. The firing of AV has the appearance of an ownership imperative behind it. As for Tippett, he'd be my choice among the obvious and potentially available options. The fact that Tony Gallagher thinks otherwise only seals the deal - is he ever simple. Let's hope this isn't Doan v2.0, because I'm not thrilled with the other options. -

Roy's production in the short time he was in Dallas was limited by a fairly documented groin injury. As for turning away from any type of contact - I think you're overstating that - in reality, the officiating was dictating a no-hitter series - and ironically, Roy was penalized for a shoulder to shoulder hit that was blown way out of proportion...nothing resembling a "head shot" from "behind"... He's actually a player who produces but also plays a decent two way game - a few consecutive seasons with offensive zone starts below 50%. What I find ironic around here is the amount of whining about the Hodgson trade, coupled with all the conclusions that Roy isn't what the Canucks need (a smaller offensively gifted center with a far more developed two way game) -

Thought this thread was a terrible read, then got to page 13 and saw Gallagher's latest posted, and realized....it's all relative. -

Not sure the Devils would agree with you there. There are a few things about Sutter that I'd like, but the overall package - don't know if he's a great fit. -

Those Babcock rumours were part of a bullshard story about Zetteburg and Datsyuk having had enough of him, etc, blah, blah, crapola. He'd be my number one choice, but it aint gonna happen. -
He has long strides as well - a bit deceiving - but I think he has also gained a step as the season progressed and his groin got healthier.

Did anyone else notice Garrison's blazing speed tonight? Hughson and Simpson did.

For the folks always poopooing 'advanced' stats... Here's what Garrison did in Florida: http://www.behindthe...34 45 46 63 67# Best relative corsi. http://www.behindthe...34 45 46 63 67# http://www.behindthe...34 45 46 63 67# Strongest quality of competition two years running. Two years ago he was a shutdown specialist as a rookie and despite primarily dzone starts had nearly an even corsi. Last year as a hybrid shutdown/top pairing scoring blueliner, he scored at an impressive clip, and still shut down the opposition's best, while also providing a stay-at-home element for Campbell. In the process, he had the best underlying numbers on a good Florida Panthers team, and was a team best +6.. It would be fair to say they miss him. It was a no-brainer why MG went after him - he proved over his first two seasons that he's exactly the kind of player we are now seeing in Vancouver.

Skimmed through again as well. Couldn't help but notice this one, posted about 25 consecutive times lol.... and then a whole lot of follow ups that resemble these...

http://www.hockeysfuture.com/prospects/jason_garrison/ Talent Analysis Garrison’s strengths are his exceptional skating ability and passing touch. He has good on-ice awareness and transitional capability. Garrison is adept at contributing to offensive without sacrificing defensive responsibility. Lacks an element of consistent physical play but it’s an area he’s working to improve. Garrison appears very comfortable on the ice and is a free-wheeling defender whose strength is generating scoring chances. He has terrific hockey sense and is an ideal power-play quarterback. Garrison is learning to pick his spots better in terms of generating the attack and continues refining his coverage and positioning – as reflected by the improvement in his plus-minus rating. Despite his size, he does not play a particularly physical game. Not sure if any of the folks here going on about how slow Garrison is have seen any of the past 20 games, but I'm guessing either not, or not paying much attention and still relying on first impressions.

I think that the long term answer for Edler will be Tanev. I like them as a pairing and I have no doubt that Tanev will be able to handle the minutes, the only problem being that it leaves Bieksa to be paired with Ballard. I think those two could actually be an interesting pairing as well, and if the minutes were spread out evenly enough that Bieksa doesn't wind up with 'third pairing' minutes, Bieksa and Ballard could be fairly dynamic. Bieksa and Edler together seem to lack "grounding" or a stay at home element - Tanev may just have enough of that cool Sami kind of composure to bring out the best in Edler again. Garrison and Hamhius are a formidable shut down (and two way pairing), and ideal to matchup against teams that are top heavy, but they're also the two steadiest blueliners (although Tanev is making his case). Even with those two together AV is managing to find top pairing minutes for Bieksa. I like that fact that AV has managed to play Garrison in enough situations this year that he'll be adaptable to different pairings should the need arise, but getting him rolling with Hamhius imo was a really good decision.

Garrison started the season coming off a chronic groin injury - and it was fairly obvious. People were going on about what a slug he is, but his skating has gradually rounded back into form and he's actually a good skater, particularly for his size - his ability to close on people is really impressive when he's healthy. The only hiccup for him this season was squeezing the stick early in the season, but he settled down and his shot is as advertised - he's actually rung his share of posts this year or his goals would be even more impressive. Overall, I don't think it's by accident that he's +17 - he's one of the most consistent guys on this club - exactly the player he was in Florida - great shutdown ability who moves the puck well and has a cannon. I think Alberts also deserves a little credit - he has played some good dependable hockey in Tanev's absence. I'm really hoping Tanev can return, or at the very least, the Canucks don't need to rely on Barker. Barker hasn't been disappointing, but he is quite noticeably the weakest link on the blueline.

Yep. Another 5 years at only 4.6. Thanks for taking the discount and coming home.
-
Interesting fact - the Canucks top 4 are all in the Canucks top 10 in scoring... Not a bad two way top 4.
-
Whatever happened to the Garrison "overhyped and overexposed" thread or whatever that derp was?
-
Garrison imo is like Hamhius, with a bigger shot. Not the fastest guy but a good skater, not flashy - but recognized by people who pay closer attention to the game as one hell of a solid two way blueliner. Garrison, like Hamhius, is extremely steady in his own end, very good awareness, always in position, decisive, moves the puck quickly, wins the majority of his puck battles... He has gained a step as the season progesses and his chronic groin injury seems to have fully healed. Not really surprised at all - he's exactly the player he was expected to be - the risks of his signing were greatly exaggerated on these boards.
-
With Garrison moving to the right side and playing some outstanding shutdown with Hamhius, his versatility really adds balance to the lineup, leaving a pair of natural right side guys and a pair of natural left side guys to round out the top 6. Just another reason why Garrison is such a great addition.
-
Yep. Also agree entirely - and I think that once he gets more used to a partner, and particularly when he's playing with Hamhius, he'll have more trust that Hammer has his back and he can afford to take slightly more measured risks.
-
I think those stats are misleading. Garrison plays a shutdown style of physical game - he doesn't hit to lay people out, he hits and sticks to players - he contains and overpowers them. He wins the vast majority of board battles imo. In those circumstances, I don't realy care about his hit stats. The bottom line is that he separates people from the puck, and imo his style of doing so is actually more efficient and consistent than focusing on throwing hits. There's also a downside to throwing hits or making a priority of doing so - watch Dion Phaneuf's game for example - so many people covet him because of the odd successful big hit, but the risks he takes when he hits (and misses) are significant, and his shotty dzone coverage is part of that style. I'd take Garrison's few hits and much greater efficiency anyday and everyday.
