  1. What's not to like? The shutdown aspect of his game has been excellent - a big guy who is aggressive and has a very active stick. Tops, +9, on the blueline. +6.72 corsi, 9th on the Canucks. Along with Hamhius and Bieksa, is facing the opposition's best. He's on a 13 goal pace despite being 4th among Canucks defensemen in powerplay time with only 1 pp goal. He's just starting to get comfortable here. Agree with playboi 19 - Gillis does it again. Half the blueline are absolute steals that Gillis landed as UFAs.
  2. He's on pace to score 13 goals in an 82 game season - isn't getting much opportunity on the pp and doesn't have a single pp goal after 9 of his 16 last year were pp goals... He's also on pace for a +28 season. What a bust.
  3. Played some serious shutdown tonight.
  4. No such thing. NOBODY is an upgrade on Sami. But Garrison is just what the Canucks needed, when they needed it. Big top 4 with shutdown ability, big shot/two way upside - reaonsable cap hit - and can also be counted on to eat up big minutes. Sami is one of a kind, but he's a 35+ contract and Yzerman, who can afford to take the risk, offered the two year term and good money - I'm glad Sami is having a great season - 8 points and +11 - guy is amazing.
  5. This thread is overexposed to nitpicking.
  6. Was thinking pretty much the same thing - AV didn't really have much of a training camp to assess pairings, and Garrison was injured until just before the season started - AV is moving him around, getting him accustomed to playing with different guys early in the season when the entire league is somewhat inconsistent and rusty, and in the event he needs to change pairings down the road for some reason, at least Garrison will have wet his feet with different partners. I also agree that he has looked quite good in the roles he has played considering he hasn't really been in that position of being fed opportunities (it never surprises me to see people looking to write a player like this off based on so little). Garrison may be keyed on the pp as things settle in more, but I don't have a problem with how he has played, and the Canucks have enough guys who can contribute that they don't need to have high expectations of Garrison off the bat. One thing I am curious is why he hasn't been used on the right side as opposed to Edler having played so much right side to Campbell, but I imagine AV has his reasons.
  7. Ehrhoff - 40 million over 10 years. Salo - 7.5 million, 2 years, 35+ contract. 7.75 million cap hit.
  8. ^ nice. looks like that Garrison guy can play a little shutdown. Ballard looks like he has lost all hesitation to his game. I had a hard time seeing exactly why he was so maligned the past few years, aside from unreasonable expectations that he produce offensive numbers in the role he was playing. The one thing I noticed about his game was a slight cautiousness when retrieving pucks in his own end - he'd almost glide the last few strides, appear to be looking over his shoulder, and wind up pinned on the boards in neutral puck battles. It seems as though he has gained his health, stride and his confidence - and seems to be able to maintain a step advantage - he's simply outskating the forecheck and moving the puck before forwards can close on him (something Karlsson does so well, also preventing him from taking any extra punishment). Aside from that, Ballard's making so many well-timed, aggressive and decisive defensive interventions that he looks like the player Gillis wanted when he acquired him. I guess those stats you post for Ballard and Tanev pretty much tell the whole story. Wow.
  9. Multiple warning signs regarding Jason Garrison's five hole goal.
  10. Not the case. He actually only played 52.7% of his time on the right side to Campbell on the powerplay, whereas he spent 75.6% of his even strength ice time playing right side to Campbell. He played left side in all his other d pairings, but far less ice time with them. http://hockey.dobber...mes=2011-2012:R And there are plently of former Panthers who have played very well for the Canucks. I'm at a bit of a loss as to why Edler is playing right side to Garrison, but I'm not AV and I'd be willing to bet that he has very solid reasons for doing so that will either work out over time, or he'll change his mind if the on ice results don't pan out. One thing I think about the Edler Garrison pairing is that it looks thus far that Garrison is being used to defer to Edler, provide stablility to Edler, who has been very good and quite mediocre - still looking for more consistency, whereas Garrison has been very steady but people are expecting instant scoring statistics because that's how they tend to calculate successfulness.
  11. Yeah - I think the people here who are complaining about him because his shot hasn't been bang on (which is about the only part of his game that has been rusty) - might be interested in how Florida feels about no longer having him on their blueline.
  12. Garrison is facing the strongest quality of competition thus far of anyone on the Canucks. His relative corsi is also +5.1. He's doing just fine. Bieksa and Hamhius are struggling, but they'll turn it around.
  13. Schroeder's numbers were better last year than Hodgson's were the year before (at the same age) - as well as a better +/-. He is a more rounded player imo. Can tell a Botchford article without clicking the link. Of course the Canucks are going to give guys like Duco, Mancari, Oreskovich shots ahead of Schroeder - they were fourth liners - Schroeder is looking to jump onto the third line / as a skilled two-way center. It makes a difference. People should have another look at the 2009 draft class - Schroeder was not a bad pick.
  14. with that cap hit he is probably a better fit in Edmonton - they don't really have to concern themselves too much with overpaying in the short term for a rookie - his cap hit would get in the way in Vancouver, of going after a veteran shut down guy, or Doan... don't need another Gragnani situation with contrived reasons to put a kid into the lineup before he's really ready.
  15. ok there, your enthusiasm is admirable, but your grasp on reality needs a bit of tuning.
  16. he should fit in nicely with Edmonton's young, finesse, undersized forwards....
  17. Dreger is Nonis' cousin, so when he chimes in on the Luongo to Toronto speculation and devalues Luongo suggesting that he is a mere salary dump, proposing things like Luongo for Komisarek... it doesn't make me consider him a valid source either - it sounds more lobbying with an interest involved. When Samjam speculated that Luongo would go to Toronto at the draft, it was pretty clear that he was making a prediction/speculating - a deal a month away? - not exactly news or information that a deal is immanent.
  18. Well played. +1. Same comedic genius arguing that the Canucks blueline is 25th best in the NHL...
