[Signing] Canucks sign Luke Schenn
oldnews replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Love Schenn - but he's just not mobile enough for that role - otherwise a solid stay-at-home guy - but with Hughes opening up so much ice, I really think he needs as mobile a partner as possible (would prefer an upgrade on Hamonic in that sense). For that reason, I think Poolman is a more likely guy to step up and play with Hughes if Hamonic and him struggle, or Hamonic gets injured, etc - one of the reasons I like the Poolman signing - he brings size, grit, stay-at-home qualities while also being a good skater. But regarding this deal and all the noise around contracts (ie Poolman vs Hakanpaa) I can't resist pointing out that Schenn's deal is so much cheaper than Hakanpaa's - and I'd consider those two more 'comparable'. -
[Signing] Avalance sign Darren Helm

why you gotta imply Helm is a dumpster dweller? good defensive forward good principal penalty killer hard worker good 'underlying numbers' / 'possession player' - arguably the best on the Red Wings. -
[Signing] Penguins sign Michael Chaput

Good player, hard worker. Tolerated the moronic fishbowl that is Vancouver. Congrats to him. -
[Signing] Stars sign Jani Hakanpaa

Worse deal then Jimbo have Schenn. That's cap space we happily saved. -
[Signing] Stars sign Jani Hakanpaa

I'd take that approach anyday over what a lot of your perceive as the #proper way to go about it. I'm not going to assume that you're one of the guys that fluffs Dubas ad-infinitum, but anyone that watches playoff hockey ought to realize that the teams that have depth (as opposed to top-forward-heavy builds that then have to fill out their rosters with bargain basement, #properly cheap depth) - teams that have quality throughout their lineup, are generally the teams that advance. This year yet another example - as the Laffs fail to exit the first round yet again, and the Coil get swept, while the two deeper, less shiny teams that most people overlooked took them out. I'm not going to say that Hakanpaa isn't quality - I think he'd be a good 3rd RHD for us - but when you spend low on one of your 'top 4' - as they did with Hamonic, I'm fine with them spending the extra million on Poolman - who I honestly thought the Jets would be retaining/re-signing (didn't see a Schmidt to Wpg deal coming). A less mobile stay at home '3rd' pairing guy like Hakanpaa is not necessarily a problem imo (we got a similiar player in Schenn for 2 x 850k - so perhaps folks here want to reverse focus on him instead, as a comparable.... I like Hakanpaa - was interested in him - but in the end I wanted more mobility on the blueline (which is why I'd preferred they prioritize upgrading on Hamonic) - so I think it's a reasonable trade-off to take Poolman's skating - Hakanpaa's hitting/edge would have been nice, but Poolman isn't easy to play against either - so I'm ok with the guy we got and the fact that we paid a bit more to secure that mobility. -
Damn this. Timmins is a young defenseman I've wanted for some time. And I very rarely doubt the work of Sakic, but that seems like panic value paid for Kuemper - with one year of term....(after losing Grubauer). It looks like GMs closed ranks somewhat in icing out Ron Francis - but he adjusted, and gameplanned it better than I think a lot of people perceive to this point. He retained a lot of leverage when teams wouldn't pony up up front - seems to have played a strong role in setting the market for defensemen high, and then used his cap space (which he still has 16 million of) to poach a few of the better UFAs who hit free agency. And he's still poised to have the kind of leverage that very few teams do.

I'm in the minority on Hamonic - I realize, like a lot of players around the league, that last season was not a great indicator of value - so many negative mitigating factors - but I still feel his spot was the ripest to upgrade upon - if possible. At the same time I have to acknowledge that the market didn't necessarily cooperate - and the markets have been somewhat unpredictable the past few years. A lot of us expected Tampa, for example, to have to make moves last offseason, and they circumvented most people's expectations. I also did not expect market prices to reinflate so quickly again this free agency, but it got far more frenzied than I anticipated. Expected more player movement around the expansion draft as well - that did not play out anywhere near comparably to the last one - virtually none of the guys I wanted moved - and at the same time, a guy like Savard that was attractive as marginal to the CBJ, wound up showcasing himself in a SCC and went to the Habs...Beyond a few RHD targets, there isn't really the market for Hughes partners that I may have hoped. That was the one thing that would have tempted me to move the 9th overall - but I can't argue with what they did do, particularly considering using that pick for acquire a Hughes partner didn't seem a likelihood either. The one thing I like about the decision they did make - it's only two years on Hamonic - I would have preferred one - but can live with two. It bridges to the possibility of his replacement - remaining imo the team's top priority. Poolman's term I am more comfortable with, because, again, I see Hamonic as more of a placeholder, particularly if he's higher up in the lineup. My feeling on Poolman is that people with particularly low expectations - are going to be pleasantly surprised. Where Edler is concerned - he's a big loss - but OEL is not what he's been made out to be by the majority of what I think are bad takes, suggesting he's been one of the worst contracts in the NHL, or no longer a top4, or incapable of playing in his own end of the ice - I find all of that utterly bizarre and in a class with the general takes on JT Miller before people here replaced all the odd sandbagging with first hand impressions of how good the guy is in our lineup. -

Looking through the remaining field of UFA defensemen.... There are two unsigned guys that I'd be interested in - and one is a LHD/ not a fit. Hakanpaa remains available (a comparable in a number of ways) - what separates them might be Hakanpaa's additional aggressiveness, and Poolman's mobility... But beyond him....not much there of interest imo. And the guy they were rumoured to be in on - McCabe - went for 4 million x 4...... Forbort went for 3x3 - physical guy, but another LHD. Savard's 14 million deal (3.5x4) is one of the few I'd consider unfrenzied value (Larsson 4x4, out ahead of the market, being another). Eddie got 3.5 Guys like Oleksiak and Ceci went at surprisingly high prices imo. Even Del Zotto at 2x2 seems a bit inflated. Ian Cole - still solid at 32 - got 2.9. -

I agree - take anything you read on these boards regarding a defensive defenseman, and put it on ignore - especially all the awful hero-chart and 'WAR' nonsense. The last thread where posters pulled out their WAR charts was the Dickinson thread - where WARriorz attempted to maintain that guys like Nick Suzuki and JPuljujarvi are top 20 defensive forwards in the NHL. Laughable wadr to the guys 'making stats pretty'. And as far as assessing the cap value of a player like this - keep in mind the absurd discussions surrounding Alex Edler that lead up to the free agency period. Countless people that figured his value as sub 1 million - forget any 'sentiment' about him being one of the best defensemen in franchise history - but consider what the market itself dictated - and a GM who is a darling of a lot of folks around here who have considered Rob Blake a genius (so much premature fluffing of that rething last year when the Kings got off to a decent start).....Blake signed Edler for 3.5 million. People here were proposing 900k - and a whole lot of them - to be countered by people that considered him done/not even worth that.... -

I think if you substitute an upgrade in the mix for Hamonic, maybe it makes an entirely different impression. Poolman, Schenn, Keeper - I'm quite happy with = quality depth imo - while still having Woo (and Bowey) in our system. Hamonic, we need to be considerably better - which is a possibility - he's had some very good seasons in his career, as recently as his second last season in Calgary. But the guy Calgary acquired from the NYI (who threw 200 hits back in the day), we're unlikely to see again imo. -

DeMelo has played two playoffs for the Jets - was acquired in Feb 2020 - and then re-signed before last season for 4 years. Not part of some reactive 'overhaul' after an allegedly brutal playoffs. He was part of that playoffs. They swept Edmonton - and then lost their #1 center after Scheifele took an unhinged run at Evans (when the 'brutal' part of their playoffs began = that one series). -
[Signing] Canucks re-sign Brandon Sutter
oldnews replied to cuporbust's topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
great to have his hard minutes/matchup, penalty killing abilities back but I think they still need to add another depth center. both Beagle and Roussel were penalty killers here - still have wingers like Motte and Highmore - added Dickinson, but undetermined whether he'll be a winger or center, and regardless, for both faceoffs and for injury insurance, another veteran center that can win faceoffs and kill penalties would be a wise addition imo. Richardson appears to still be available - he, or comparable, would be a good guy to bring back imo. -

someone didn't read the thread. and/or is relatively new here. for reference: half of CDC loses it's mind whenever there's a deal it doesn't like. Miller Motte/Vanek Shinkaruk/Granlund Hodgson/Kassian Luongo etc etc all classics. these threads grow like a wildfire....and it's not exactly 'love' that drives it. -

wouldn't have been right in Vancouver if there weren't a single player for the polarizing whinge crew to dwell and derp upon. my apologies up front to Tucker Poolman - you're coming to a market that just literally lost every whipping boy option they had.... Eriksson Edler Roussel Virtanen Holtby Beagle All they had left is a $1million Sutter.....and the last Jet they thought was a '3rd pairing' D. don't take it personally - they've got nothing left to work with. they'll find a new fixation soon enough. -

meh. he couldn't possibly choose his Leafs - who lost Andersen (2 x 4.5) and added Mrazek (3 x 3.8) and did little else.... so he had to choose the team with the most ex-Leafs lol. -
