  1. Yea we knew they had to give up draft capital to clear cap space. Giving up another draft pick to address cap issues is not good, but this is probably the best they can do given the circumstances and the whole league knows we're desperate. Pearson needs a fresh start and we can't further ruin the teams reputation by waiving him. He'll probably get more opportunity on a young habs team and gets flipped for another draft pick at the TDL. Montreal is taking advantage of all other GMs past mistakes. Good on them. Not sure how good Desmith was as a backup at Pens, but I guess he has more NHL games than Martin.
  2. Dang I just joined this year after being a nucks fan since '94. was wondering why searching for canucks forum lately has directed me to the nhl site. I thought it was a bit sketchy but didnt see this coming. This is possibly one of the, if not the best fan forums for a NHL hockey team. It's very well run and organized. I have to resort to twitter for latest news. This is disappointing....
  3. Gotta feel for blue jackets fans. Had a horrible season and now this drama. The GM should take the blame for this. Maybe it's for the better that they get rid of the coach if the players dislike him this much. I can't imagine the team would perform well if some are uncomfortable with him before the season has even started. If Babcock gets canned, who's another veteran coach currently available for the CBJ?
  4. Eek 8x8 is a lot of money. At one point Ottawa couldn't keep anyone on their team, so to see them locking up their core to long term contracts is good for their fans.
  5. Out of all the ads I definitely dislike the gambling ones the most. It's getting out of control. I get it's a money maker, but just because you add a line telling the audience to play within their limits doesn't make it more okay. Ppl can choose to gamble at their own will, but it shouldn't be encouraged. I hope BC follows suit.
  6. How Detroit jumped to #19 from #24 is beyond me. I know they added Debrincat but their goaltending and the top 4 d is still questionable. We're basically just ahead of all teams that are rebuilding lol.
  7. With how the past few seasons have gone, I don't blame Petey for wanting to bet on himself and see how the team does before committing. It just sucks that the distraction will be there during the season. Anytime the team goes on a losing streak or Petey on a bit of a drought we'd be talking about trading him.
  8. Yes exactly so he's committed to cash, not the leafs. All the toronto media immediately rave about what a great deal this is. It might be a fair deal by the numbers, but the 4 yr term can't be possibly be a good thing for leafs. I guess they're just happy that he resigned and worry later.
  9. Is Aaron Dell the goalie who has a history of dirty cheap shots and finally got suspended after injuring someone? I would think he's done in the NHL by now.
  10. Forget about the AAV and how it compares with other top tier players' contract. The fact that he was only willing to sign a 4-yr contract suggests he's not committed and simply waiting for the opportunity to play elsewhere as soon there's another good team that can afford him. McDavid and MacKinnon you can bet they'll remain with the same team, but with Matthews you're already asking that question as soon as he signed a contract. Allowing players to dictate everything is like part of leafs team culture now - doesn't matter who the GM is anymore. After 3 years they have to go through this again, crazy.
  11. I agree with you to some extent. I just feel like some of this pressure to not take discount is from the agents and the NHLPA. There'll be questions from players like why do I have to take discount when my teammate didnt or just because this player took discount why should I do the same. Agents also gets a bigger cut if the contract value is maximized. Petey doesn't strike me as a person who cares about a couple of extra million. So I think there's more to this than greediness.
  12. This is a puzzling move by Yzerman. 2.3M for Petry isn't bad but with so much cap space I thought he could pull something bigger than this. It's as if he's on a budget and was told not to spend up to the cap cause the team is not ready to contend.
  13. There's gotta to be continual public pressure on this. No time table shouldn't be an acceptable response at the point. It has already been said that they need to give teams and agents time to react to the release of the report. Does the nhl really want this distraction during the season? They should already know there's no way they can sweep this under the rug.
  14. Looks like a great signing based on reports on this player. I didn't think we could land him. Short term at a low AAV so it's low risk. How's our cap situation after this signing though?
  15. This a good hockey trade in my opinion. I'm not sure why all the trashing on Dubas. Regardless of whether you think EK is the right player for pens, Dubas was hired to keep the team's cup window open as long as the big 3 are still playing, and ultimately only gave up a late 1st and 2nd. And he also somehow gained a likely early 3rd round pick back and a prospect from SJ. There would be no deal if he wants SJ to retain EK's salary - that was probably the starting point from Grier. As for SJ, Grier's return was okay considering he really only had one trade partner. He got rid EK's entire contract and exchanged their 3rd round to gain a 1st. It was an alright return with the cards he was dealt with. The real winner is Montreal here which is always the case being the third team, gaining a 2nd rounder and taking Petry's contract at 4.6M for 2x years. He's regressing but still could provide some stability and veteran pressnce on their young blue line. They're not ready compete in 2 years anyways.
  16. I am so curious what the return will be if SJ doesn't want to retain. I think Grier has to retain as much as he said he doesn't want to if he wants to make the deal and get some value back.
  17. He's definitely an useful player with rare attributes who can provide offense when put on a top 6 role, but I'm not sure if he's worth 6.5M at 7 years. Is he a 7-8M dollar player on a shorter term deal? The AVV should be lower by about at least 1M if it's max term in my opinion. He has also had injury issues from the past couple of seasons and with his style of play I can't imagine he will still be as effective in the latter part of the contract.
  18. I would agree with all the points you made until I see the last sentence. You're comparing the weekly mass random shootings that happen in the US over the shootings in Canada that are typically targeted against individuals and gang related. Not even close.
  19. Too early to judge, but even if Benson becomes a legit top 6 pt-per-game player, I still think Willander is the right pick if he becomes our top pair D. Points is an easy way to evaluate a player, but it shouldn't be all what we use to compare players especially when it's a forward vs defenseman.
  20. Wise choice. His agent probably advised him to sign so he can get to UFA asap. Playing in the small arena sucks but that isn't worth waiting for an extra year if he's ready to turn pro.
  21. I'd say this is the main reason why it's a great signing for Ottawa. With his past scoring there'll always be someone who's willing to take him at TDL, regardless of how he performs. Might even fetch a first rounder from a desperate team. I'm surprised this is the best deal he can get. I feel he's on the older side for a one year show me deal. He's probably waiting for the cap to go up next year but I have feeling he might regress.
  22. Okay I don't know the details of all his contracts. I'm curious if there's a scenario where he could be bought out for the third time? You know anything can happen.
  23. According to some Toronto analysts, 13.5M AAV would be a discount for Matthews - but I don't think they're referring to short term deal. If McDavid doesn't exist, Matthews would be the best player in the league in their minds. I can't agree with that until he performs in the post season when it matters. Matthews signing only for 3 years means he's likely not resigning after this contract. This is the best window they have to win.
  24. I was kinda worried when we first hired 3 AGMs that there would be too many voices in one room. It would be nice if Clancey stayed but understand his decision to leave for a bigger role. Agreed with your comment about Cammi Granato is settling well in her position that we don't need to replace Clancey's role.
  25. Yea this is worth noting when you read the players' statement through this lens. Some of the statements have denied any wrongdoing, but didn't explicitly say the player was not involved which I guess is lawfully correct since no criminal charges have been laid. I think I can only trust the statements from those who state they were not at the gala at all. I am surprised it's taking so long for them to release the report.
