  1. I disagree on context mattering at least in the grand scheme of things. When people look at a GM's overall work with a franchise it's going to be looked at the big picture and not in specific circumstances. As I said before Mike Gillis was one win away from becoming "the greatest Canucks GM of all time" and even if things turned out the way did after 2011, it would not have affected Gillis standing if the Canucks won the cup in 2011. Likewise Bergevin is either going to look like a genius or someone who overpaid to resign Price and gave up an elite defenseman for Drouin. It depends on whether the Habs on the cup or not
  2. I wouldn't call the Stars 2020 as Cinderella runs since they were the 3rd seed in the playoffs
  3. Actually The Leafs and Golden Knights had higher Goals For than the Bolts. But yes the stats are pre-Kucherov so yes the Bolts are an entirely different level
  4. Tkachuck is young enough to build a young core around. But I don't see how Monahan would be a player Buffalo need
  5. Yep but Tampa is a different beast. I just checked the Top point producers in the playoffs the 4 out of the top 5 come from the bolts. As for Goaltending Price and Vasilevskiy look pretty event. I am not sure Price can withstand the fire power of the Bolts.
  6. I don't think the NHL is going to do anything about this to be honest. Going over the cap during the playoffs mean better players in the roster and could lead to higher ratings.
  7. Habs has a good run but i don't see how they can get past Tampa Bolts in 5 This is probably going to be similar to the Pens vs Preds Finals
  8. I think there has to be a category between 1 and 2, not every fan can remember that Zac Dalpe was part of the Canucks
  9. Yeap I know but as you said they are miniscule compared to Luongo's so it would be nice for another team to face what Vancouver did seeing as other teams were able to get away from facing a huge cap recapture it for whatever reason.
  10. Reinhart from why I gathered is a C that can play (and has played) on the wing, one of the folks in sportsnet said if Benning does pursuit Reinhart it will be basically management trying to fix their mistake in letting Toffoli walk. Of course there is no actual evidence to suggest that Benning is actually trying to pursuit Reinhart, so it's all hypothetical. That said the belief is that if Benning does want to get aggressive he's going to need to give up some assets to get a scoring winger the team needs. As for Chiarelli, point is people are going to remember your stint as a GM for a specific team overall success of the franchise. So one season, like the Canucks' run during the bubble, isn't enough of a good will to change people's minds about Benning's tenure with the Canucks. As for the cap space. Yes Canucks' didn't it was all because of poor decision making overpaying for bottom players. A franchise or management with a good "capologist" (like Lawrence Gillman someone who Benning didn't replace) could have identified that. And now it's come back to haunt the team.
  11. It would be nice for another team to get that recapture penalty like what the Canucks has to endure
  12. Of course not but this was just one season. What do people remember more about Peter Chiarelli's stint as the Oilers GM ? The GM that took the Oilers to a good playoff run that one season or one who squandered all the Oilers' assets? Years of some bad seasons and, once again, being a lottery team again the next isn't going to go away with just one playoff run. Or all three? Word is that Canucks need another winger even if Hoglander and Podkolzin (who probably is still a year or two away from being a permanent Top 6, should he pan out) pan out. This is the reason why there are talks of Benning trading the 9th for a Winger like Reinhart, something that maybe wouldn't be a necessary conversation if Toffoli was still part of the team.
  13. Lol I do remember that NHL game when Eriksson was signed. You started the roster after the offseason I was able to trade Eriksson and a 1st for Tarasenko Good times
  14. During the time most people said signing these two players for that term and price was not a good idea because of the team's future cap implications (which the ended up being the case) and also the time when Washington replaced Beagle with a player 4th line getting league minimum that has had more points and + player since then. In the end I think when and where something happened is irrelevant. A GM's portfolio or overall performance is going to be determined by the totality of what he did. So history isn't going to say he overpaid for Beagle and Roussel before covid, but had to pass on Toffoli because of Covid (or even the Luongo recapture). it's simple going to be someone who overpaid for bottom 6 players but passed on top 6 scoring wingers at a good deal. There's no such thing as context when evaluating it's the overall results and, to be honest, it hasn't been looking that good https://www.vancouverisawesome.com/canucks-hockey/nhl-gms-who-last-7-years-are-typically-a-lot-more-successful-than-jim-benning-3897497
  15. Perhaps but I can't imagine the Flames entertaining a discussion to trade Tkachuck w/o a 1st Rounder and a quality NHL Player
  16. It's not so much it's not giving Montreal any credit it's just that it's Tampa. They have been virtually unbeatable this Playoffs and just gave the Islanders a 8-0 whopping
  17. Even if the Habs to make it to the finals you think they have a chance of getting past Tampa ? I think the chance of that is .000001%
