  1. And his defensive play ... he's a two way Selke caliber forward
  2. I think if the plan is to go have 3 scoring lines the Canucks are going to need wingers. Podkolzin looks to be someone who will start as a bottom 6 and could make his way up. With Hoglander (Top 6), Pearson (Top 9), Boeser (Top 6) and Miller (Top 6 and possible 3C) that Canucks still need a Winger. If the Canucks want to have 3 scoring lines (and it's a big stretch calling the 3rd line a scoring line unless they get a good play making 3C) Miller - Petterson - Boeser Hoglander - Horvat - ??? Pearson - ??? - Podkolzin And this is IF Podkolzin pans out in his first season. So looking at this line up the Canucks need a 3C and a RW. Toffoli would have fit in nicely as the RW and now Benning will need to find another RW either by Free Agency (and hopefully get a player as good a Toffoli with the same deal) or via a Trade (where he would need to give up another asset).
  3. If Habs face Vegas it Vegas will win in 6 since I can see Price stealing a game or two If Habs face the Avs, Habs will be swept too much elite fire power for Price to steal any of the games
  4. I think there's no one here that can say in a straight face that they wouldn't have wanted Toffoli back in Vancouver especially with that term and cap. Those saying otherwise are lying to themselves and I can't really blame them. Like I said in a previous thread, it's a way coping up with a loss or after a breakup where you try to justify it was for the best. I am listening to Sportsnet 650 and their podcast and as they said "The Canucks had no reason to be getting rid of a player as a good as Toffoli"
  5. Before the Covid outbreak yes. Toffoli scoring at will over the Canucks made the Habs move up in the standings and the canucks dropping. Also The Habs were only 9 pts behind and some of the loser points the Habs were able to get was because of Toffoli
  6. But he did and that was the problem and you are right we wouldn't be talking about him but this also showed how Benning squandered an opportunity to sign Toffoli on a good amount and term. It doesn't look good for the GM when you let go of a Top 6 scoring winger that wanted to stay in Vancouver because of his past free agent signings. A lot of people who defend Benning would bring up the Luongo recapture penalty and the flat cap because of Covid. I don't buy that since Benning said they were anticipating that Luongo would retire before his term is up and the flat cap wouldn't have been a problem if he didn't overpay Free Agents to come here, a move that was criticized by many people even at the time.
  7. Fine but I'd rather have Toffoli over Beagle, Roussel, Sutter, Baertschi or even Pearson + Virtanen There's only one reason why Toffoli isn't a Canuck right now and it's because of Benning's past mistakes in his signings. Plain and simple I believe one of the Canucks' many needs, even if Höglander and Podkolzin pans out, is a scoring winger. With letting Toffoli walk the only way Benning can acquire a scoring winger right now is either via a trade (giving away more assets) or free agency (which I predict will have a larger cap and term than Toffoli's contact with the Habs)
  8. I can't stand Boston but it seems like this team is one resilient bunch but so was some of the most hated reality stars in TV. That said glad Isles won and hope they take care of business in Game 6
  9. I would have probably given Gaudette. I mean between Highmore or Patrick I'd take my chances on Patrick. Plus it's very possible The Flyers might consider a direct swap considering they are selling low for Patrick as well
  10. Yep but my point was tanking (at least for a short period) alone is not the main reason why an organization has a losing culture.
  11. He had 2 30 pt seasons despite some setbacks with his injuries. At worst he will probably end up a serviceable NHL player
  12. Well that's the thing though a winning organization needs to have a solid developmental system for players that are not NHL ready yet. The guys you mean (for the most part) were NHL ready so they didn't need to go through the AHL system. But what about players that are not yet NHL ready and need a good AHL system for their development? Especially guys who are later round picks or undrafted players. I hate to use this example again but in Tampa Gourde, Paquette, Killorn, and some others went through their AHL system to develop before becoming good and effective players for their NHL team. Which is the reason why the have depth and Vancouver does not
  13. I am still waiting when the development part comes in especially in the AHL front. Besides the goalies how many NHL players did the Canucks already produce in the AHL system? 7 years in Benning's reign perhaps Gaudette and the organization decided to give up on him.
  14. Exactly also having "glue guys" are fine but how can Beagle and Sutter be "glue guys" if they weren't part of the team yet until they brought in to be "glue guys". The Irony here signing these "glue guys" Beagle, Sutter, and Roussel was the reason why the Canucks lost Markstrom, Stecher, and Tanev in one off season or the real "glue guys". I didn't expect Benning to sign all three even w/o those overpaid guys but keeping one of them (I was thinking either Tanev or Stecher) would have been fine.
  15. Yes because tanking can not build a winning culture
  16. It helps having fans in the building. I actually think if there were fans in game 5 or 7 Toronto would have probably the series
  17. I get so frustrated that the LA Kings have won 2 cups. Not because they didn't deserve it but because they got there by being one of the lowest scoring teams in the respective regular seasons and magically turned it on the moment the playoffs started.
  18. So I just saw this thread now. Firstly I never listed to JD Burke after his trashing The Last Jedi so let's put that out of the way. As for the Tavares contract though, I would rather pay 11 million for Tavares than almost 20 million for Beagle, Roussel, Eriksson, Sutter etc. As for the argument of the cap going up as a reason to sign Tavares for 11 million. Yeah at the time it was a valid argument and yes the flat cap and covid derailed that. But then people here are defending Benning saying it was Covid and the flat cap as the reason of the Canucks lack of off season activity while, at the same time, criticizing The Leafs because of their cap issues and signing star players to huge contacts. I find this hypocritical since The Leafs management also took into consideration the cap going up (especially when signing Tavares).
  19. Yeah I am fine with the suspension but the optics still seems strange considering Wilson got nothing. And normally someone like Scheifele would have a lighter suspension for the hit considering he's a star player ( I mean we all know Rick Nash and Milan Lucic weren't suspended for what they did). As I said the suspension is fair but this is out of character for the NHL DOPS. My theory is this is a reactionary move on their part and doubled down on suspending Scheifele because of the backlash of not suspending Wilson.
  20. Yeah I agree plus the wins and points the Canucks had weren't so much that they willed to get these wins in the last few games rather Edmonton already secured the 2nd spot so they weren't even trying and Calgary was just as disinterested as Vancouver playing these games. So these weren't even moral victories to begin with
  21. Man this does happen ... it's another example of Canuck luck even if Vancouver doesn't move down in the lottery NJD getting Luke is a loss for Vancouver
