[Report] Jim Benning to return for next season
iinatcc replied to -Vintage Canuck-'s topic in Canucks Talk
I don't mind Benning being back if it means a change in the people surrounding him. The Canucks could use Benning's Drafting and Scouting acumen that is fine. But I do feel that other areas such as public relations, negotiations, financial and cap management, analytics, and innovations are things we need to address. The thing about Benning is that I do kind of like his folksy old school hockey personality and Benning has the hockey acumen needed to run an NHL team but I think he needs people to help him with business acumen of things. The tragic part about this is the young core Benning built did improve the reputation of the team around the league. It says a lot when Holtby, Toffoli, and OEL all wanted to come or stay in Vancouver. But this season has so mismanaged I think the reputation Benning built last season is all but gone. -

That 2012 to 2013 year was hilarious Canucks were supposed to buy out David Booth at the end of the season then he got injured -

So tired of this pandemic excuse to defend Benning. Yes it did make a big impact but if the pandemic was the only factor that affected teams penny pinching how does it explains the success of let's say the Carolina Hurricanes? By all accounts they are usually one of the more budged conscious teams in the league and look were they are now. -

Pandemic also happened in Montreal and they signed Toffoli. And since when was a 4 year commitment a rental? No one could have predicted a Pandemic (unless you are Bill Gates) but they could have predicted the cap troubles the team would end up being. Even without the Pandemic the cap situation would have been bad and the Pandemic only made things worse. -

Just to name a few .... Blues got Hoffman for 4 Million, Habs to Toffoli for 4.25 Million, Oilers got Tyson Barrie for 3.75 Million, and Caps got Chara for 1.5 Million. -

A good GM knows to prepare for any contingencies for the future. Why is it that the Canucks had the most difficulty during the off season yet other teams actually benefited from the Covid situation? -

Wizard is a bit of an exaggeration. Yzermam and Ken Holland are drafting wizards, Benning is just good to very good. The only reason why Benning looks like a wizard is the history of Canucks drafting. -

I'm just saying these are two different cases.. but actually if Benning didn't overpay for bottom 6 players he would have been able to resign Toffoli -

So you are saying paying 4.25 million for Toffoli is the same as paying 3 million for Beagle and Roussel ? It's not hindsight Toffoli is a Top 6 forward and the other two are bottom 6 players. Toffoli's contact has value and Beagle and Roussel are overpayments -
Most of us were just following the draft rankings from the hockey analysts. Which isn't the worst thing to do. I mean Benning did go off the board by picking Juolevi over Tkachuk and many of us wished he didn't. I admit I was one of the folks that overreacted to this but when Glass is being compared to Mark Scheifele you can't blame us for getting to excited. That said I got over it after a week after all that I heard about Pettersson.

I still want to keep Travis Green actually. He was put in a difficult situation not getting a contract extension and, yes he's a professional, but that has to be lingering on someone especially if it's dragged out as long as it did. That said he's probably not going to coach the Canucks next season. Even if they decide to extend him and offer him a contract, why would he agree on an extension if other teams are looking for a coach as well? And from what I hear Green has a very good rep around the league.

Speaking of hindsight this was a strange draft year. The Top 3 was set in stone with Matthews, Laine, and Puljujarvi and there were even talks that Laine could surpass Matthews. There was so much hype surrounding Laine and Puljujarvi that no one could have imagined their NHL careers would be underwhelming. Though that could change Puljujarvi seems to have figured it out and could surpass Laine if their respective trajectory continues.

it's more about how many mistakes the GM makes against the overall success. As for the Pens if you were to trace the trade they got Pearson for Hagelin and got Gudbransson for Pearson. It's not that bad actually since Hagelin was struggling with the Pens that time and Pearson was not just a fit. Plus I think even if the Pens did win two cups recently so it's easier to overlook any mistake a GM makes. Benning could have signed Loui Eriksson to a 7 year $10 million contract but if no one would care if Vancouver wins a cup.

[Rumour] Sam Reinhart open to a trade back to West Coast
iinatcc replied to a topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Trade Miller ? If I were to pick one or the other. I would rather use any Miller money in Reinhart than paying Miller's extension. That said with Miller turning 29 I would try to make Reinhart and Miller work. So I suppose this would depend on the kind of bridge deal Pettersson and Hughes get.
