  1. Regarding the retool vs rebuild. Neither approach entailed signing bad contracts or making bad trades In the case of the retool era Benning traded and resigned Sutter and Gudbransson and signed Eriksson to a long term contract. In the rebuild era Benning signed guys like Roussel and Beagle. And gave Baertschi and extension. There have been teams that were able to retool and did so successfuly w/o making too many be decision. The Blues had a mini retool when they moved on from Backes and Oshie, Boston was able to retool after missing the playoffs, and The Wild, as far as I know, never went to a full rebuild they just gradually added pieces to their team. Point is regardless the team is in a rebuild or retool. It shouldn't excuse the GM for making bad moves. And a retool could still work if done right
  2. Yep showing the leader he is in a meaningless game where it was probably beneficial for the team to lose instead
  3. And one of them probably is thinking about getting a contract from a different team next season.
  4. Didn't watch the game but basically two of the players that got a point are probably making an effort so they can get a contract next season. And the other that scored (Highmore) wouldn't be in this team if Benning didn't trade for him. Lol Canucks can't even tank right
  5. Well let's see. At this point there can be no margin for error moving forward so if ownership decides to keep Benning, he shouldn't be allowed to make one mistake
  6. Well with the Covid situation it's not fun in Europe right now. Plus after a tough year he probably needs a recharge. That said it's so strange with Jesse Puljujarvi figuring t out this season, and Sebastian Aho being awesome. Laine could end up being most dissapointing from that World Junior where the three dominated the tournament.
  7. But what's going to prevent him from resigning similar players on similar deals. If his reason for getting Beagle and Roussel is to "insulate" the young guys what's makes you think he won't do the same once more young guys are drafted ?
  8. You are right but the thing is I think after 7 or so seasons Benning is always going to be Benning and, based on his history as the GM, I can't imagine him really improving the team.
  9. Loui Eriksson really felt like he just came here to collect a pay check and nothing more. Like he went full best mode in his last year in Boston knowing he wouldn't have to make any effort once he cashes in
  10. So two points I'd like to reply on here .. Considering how much he was producing offensively with the Canucks and the Habs a Toffoli in a steady decline is still worth it a 4.25 million. Toffoli is a 0.84 PPG and 28 goal scorer for the Habs. If a steady decline means he's down to a 0.6 PPG player and scoring only 20 goals. Still good value. Or would it be better paying Brandon Sutter $100,000 more scoring being a 0.25 PPG player for a number of seasons? As for Toffoli being the missing link only if The Canucks are competitive. Didn't Benning always say before this season this is a team "that can compete"? And if the Canucks were a rebuilding team then why did Benning give up a 1st for JT Miller and give up gave up a prospect, a 2nd round pick and a conditional pick for Toffoli? This isn't something rebuilding teams do. So to me Benning gave up some of the teams futures for Toffoli it would have made sense to at least keep longer term.
  11. Pretty sure even without Toffoli most of those guys you mentioned will be exposed. As for Toffoli being an "aging player", Motte is only 3 years younger so he's not exactly a spring chicken either. So the Canucks could have signed a 29 Year Old Top 6 scorer or potentially lose a 26 year old 4th liner. Sorry I like Motte but I think the benefit of keeping Toffoli outweighs the risks. As for the other players well it's all about protecting the one the organization feels has the most upside, chances are, with due diligence, the one protected ends up being the best of the bunch. As what Ian MacIntyre said in Sportsnet 650 - "There's no way you can explain your way out of this Toffoli situation" and he's right.
  12. So he can be like a Brent Burns type player
  13. and I will just put this in because well whatever
  14. If Canucks draft Owen Power this should be his goal song
  15. yeah but i don't see how can winning 3 meaningless games is going to change the mentality of the players especially when you consider the other 53 games. If anything the best the fanbases can hope for is some sort of refresh (not reset) next season.
  16. if you are talking about Calgary and Vancouver I don't think winning the next 3 games against each other is going to suddenly change the team to a winning culture
  17. For towards ? I would protect Pettersson, Horvat, Boeser, Miller, Pearson, Toffoli, and either Motte or Lind.
  18. Someone in this forums compared Benning to looking like Elmer Fudd. I kind of feel the league and talent agents also think he's a pushover like Elmer Fudd
  19. 4 years isn't exactly long term plus if there was a player to spend 4.25 million it would be a player that can score 25 to 30 goals and not Jay Beagle, Antoine Roussel, or Brandon Sutter
  20. Yeah and if Toffoli was in the team the Canucks could actually have 3 scoring lines with Pettersson, Miller, and Horvat all taking center and Pearson, Höglander, Boeser, Toffoli, and maybe Podkolzin or an untraded Gaudette as line mates
  21. I really miss Jason Botchford he help no punches with his comments and criticisms to the team when it was warranted. My hope for Pearson is that his career trajectory is that of Chris Higgins. Which means his sharp decline starts once his contract expires.
