  1. Miller trade was his ONLY win At least of all the deals that were considered significant or noteworthy
  2. So I guess +/- is only relevant when its used to bash a player from the Leafs
  3. It doesn't take much to outsmart Benning though
  4. Maybe Canucks can reunite Patrick Kane and Jonathan Toews as part of the Canucks
  5. Well technically the season is over so until next season we are back in reality Otherwise I'd be posting GIFs during the GDT and PGT. Especially when the Canucks are on a gong show
  6. Yeah but history will repeat and this team will just keep gushing relying on some hallow optimism. Heck people here are already penciling Arthur Silovs as the next franchise goalie. Lol For Canucks fans blind optimism is hard to resist
  7. Most teams have overpaid (or bad ) contracts. What's unique about OEL is that it's still 4 more years, he's redundant, and there's no defensive prospect that can play in the Top 4 to shelter OEL. Also Johnson was like a +20 in his cup winning season. OEL was like -20
  8. Quite a few did. I remember bringing up when someone from the Coyotes media discussed OEL when he was traded to Vancouver. I didn't sound good. And all people here could say "lol Arizona media" as if people here knew better
  9. So Benning's trade with Arizona and Dickinson in his last off seasons cost/gain the Canicks Gave up 2021 9th overall pick 2022 2nd round pick 2023 7th round pick 2021 3rd Round Pick 2024 2nd round pick Dead cap space until 2031 Gained Connor Garland (still in the organization) Josh Bloom (from the Stillman trade, which was acquired from Dickinson) Some people here still defend Benning
  10. This is a point most people (and Benning supporters) overlook. People think a GM's job is only drafting, trading, and signing contracts (I guess this is what happens when this is basically your only task in the NHL GM modes ). But part of the GM's job is building the environment in your organization and managing the day to day (sometime boring) activities. What Gillis brought into the table was his innovative management style focused tackling issues in an analytical way. Gillis' downfall was after 2011 he became more reactive to situations and part of me felt like he wasn't listening to himself anymore. He basically fell of a cliff (figurative speaking) after that.
  11. I believe there is another universe where the Canucks did win the cup but Aliens invaded at the same time.
  12. I think realistic and tempered is a better way to describe thnigs and not negative . If we all looked at positive Cody Hodgson would have been the captain of the Canucks, Shinkaruk would have been our Patrick Kane, and Tryamkin would be an elite defender. Point is the prospects you mentioned all have to pan out before we can see them as part of the Organisation long term plans. As for the WCE helping out the Sedins. Yes you are probably right, but that's the card presented to the Sedins at the time. Your argument before is stating injuries or goaltending the reason why this core hasn't done much but we can't work with "IF's" and "Buts" the organization has to work with they have. Every team runs to adversity, Golden Knights lost their #1 goalie before the season strated and Florida had a ton of injuriös this year. We call the Leafs chokers but they were eliminated by teams that make it to the finals no one is saying "if only Toronto didn't have to face such tough teams in the 1st round", the fact is most see them as playoff underperformers.
  13. We don't gauge the team on futures at least not after 4 years. And optimism only makes sense if there's something to back it up, I say this team has used up their benefit of the doubt card. And it's now all about getting it done.
  14. I think it was you the compared this Canucks core to the 2011 one. So you started it. But I ask again what has this core done? I get that their careers aren't over yet but you are the one comparing this core with the one that one win away from winning the cup. Maybe this core does win the cup in 3 to 5 years but who knows at the point. You can base your assessment of a core based on futures. Maybe they lift the cup or maybe they will belong to the group of failed cores like the early 2010 Oilers. You bring up individual stars and awards but we're talking about a winning core. And funny you brought up the Leafs. I am pretty sure if the Canucks their core four was formed you would be singing praises due to their potential.
  15. the first one is the most important ... Pettersson+Hughes+Demko+Boeser+Miller haven't done anything yet.
  16. That's fair but I think it's revisionist history saying Bettman gifted or rigged the expansion draft for Vegas to be a great team from the get go. If that was the case more people would have predicted Vegas to make the playoffs in their first season in 2017.. But none of these articles thought Vegas would make the playoffs much less making it the cup finals https://www.nhl.com/news/2017-18-stanley-cup-expert-picks-predictions/c-291463038 https://thehockeywriters.com/predictions-2017-18-nhl-season/ https://www.sportingnews.com/ca/nhl/list/nhl-picks-predictions-2017-18-stanley-cup-eastern-western-conference-champions/17dlfrh6poe3r1hc2foias3zsn
  17. I think above average is the highest Benning can reach during his tenure in Vancouver when it comes to drafting. You can't consider him good until he lands a Point or Guentzel type player in the later rounds. But normally we put Drafting and Development together and if you combine the two Benning would be, at best, below average. All the players Benning drafted that are currently in the Canucks main roster was never AHL developed outside of Demko. So one must wonder why didn't guys like Rathbone, Lind, etc. transition from the AHL or NHL. Was it just poor drafting or poor development or a combination of the two?
  18. I wouldn't say very favorable rather past expansion drafts were awful. I think what Vegas got is somewhere between awful to very favorable, so let's say "Fair". Which makes sense the last thing the NHL needs is another Atlanta Thrashers situation. Plus Vegas was handicapped during the Entry Draft, if they dropped where they did with having the best odds in the lottery they could have gotten either Heiskanen or Makar. I think the plan was that Vegas would have an expansion draft that will the team competitive the next few years (which I guess what Seattle is going through right now). Difference is Vegas outsmarted a lot of other GM's with the deals they made acquiring picks for not selecting certain players.
  19. Gillis only added the sprinkles but at least he added something What did Benning contribute to the cake? Oh "Jim" indeed
  20. I think I have to repeat myself Vegas weren't gifted with anything. And I'll add that many here didn't even predict Vegas would make the playoffs this year
