Seven years without a clear plan from Canucks brass.
iinatcc replied to appleboy's topic in Canucks Talk
The team still had a pretty good core which had some bad coaching the year before. Benning did tweak the team for 2014 - 2015 and actually did a good job getting Miller, Vrbata, and Richardson to decent contracts and acquired Bonino and brought Horvat him. Basically he was able to support a decent core and gave the team one more run at the playoffs. But after that season it was time to rebuild the team. And this is where Benning struggled, it took him 6 years to get the team back in the playoffs (and to be honest I'm not even sure if they would have made it to the playoffs if covid didn't happen). 6 years is a long time and now he's expecting the fans to wait 2 more years to be competitive? -

The obvious answer, and plausible if Benning just manged the money right, is all three. One option doesn't prevent getting the other. You could still have Toffoli with Höglander and Podkolzin. And by the time their ELC is up Toffoli would be off the books in the year and the next. The better question is would you rather have Sutter, Beagle, and Eriksson all eating up 13 million of cap space or 4 million for Toffoli? Because that is the real reason why Vancouver couldn't keep Toffoli. but I understand. This justification of Höglander and Podkolzin is kind of a way to overcome and cope losing Toffoli -
Le'ts put it this way. These were high points in a sea of trades Benning lost. Plus we still aren't sure if Schmidt will pan out yet

[Rumour] Sam Reinhart open to a trade back to West Coast
iinatcc replied to a topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
I think the value of OJ now is probably a small sweetener. Like when they add a salad or mashed potatoes the side of a meal. It's nice but it isn't going to be the reason why you ordered it from the menu. -
[Rumour] Sam Reinhart open to a trade back to West Coast
iinatcc replied to a topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Hmmm I don't think Buffalo in any circumstances is taking Eriksson a and Roussel's contracts and Juolevi has no value. I think this year's 1st for Reinhart would only work if Canucks land a top 5 and possibly give up JT Miller (so replace Reinhart as a winger and center) and possibly a later round pick. Remember how much Ottawa gave up for Duchene I think Reinhart and Duchene are comparable assets -

Lol I never understood why people thought he would. Before he played his first game in the NHL he kept saying he wants to play in the NHL then a year later he bolts to Russia. It's pretty obvious he didn't want to be a Canuck

[Rumour] Sam Reinhart open to a trade back to West Coast
iinatcc replied to a topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
Will Reinhart become an RFA? That's actually a good idea. If someone can go Aho likely Buffalo will not match due to their financial issues and why would you want to keep a player in the organization for 7 years if they don't want to be there? Giving up 1st, 2nd, and 3rd isn't exactly that bad especially if you know you are going to be a playoff team -
The I have Mixed Feelings about Jim Benning Chaosthread 3000
iinatcc replied to Me_'s topic in Canucks Talk
The one thing I realized about Benning in all this is that off all the things we say about him the common thread is that he really doesn't do a good job taking control of a situation and navigating around the various circumstances. We all know Benning is good in drafting. But drafting is when the GM has the most control of the situation with the only factors you need to work around is your draft position (which isn't really a problem for Benning since the Canucks have mostly end up picking the 5 to 10 spots) and which player is available when it's your team. Other areas like managing the team, signing players, and trading requires you to navigate the situation with the players, the other team GM's, or the coaching staff. And this is, where I fear, Benning struggles at Another example is this Covid year. The stories you are hearing with DiPietro and how the Blues prevented DiPietro from playing games in Utica is very strange. And some could argue that the Canucks played poorly this season because of the schedule they had. But doesn't the GM have a say in the schedule? I know teams work with the league to come up with a schedule for the season. Why did other teams in the North Division get better schedules but the Canucks didn't? Or did the other GMs just did a better job working with the league when doing the schedule? So it's a thought but I just don't think Benning is good handling things when other external factors are in play. -

Signing Eriksson, Beagle, and Roussel had nothing to do with having a thing prospect pool though. In fact Beagle and Roussel signings were done when the Sedins already retired. CBJ and EDM are really low bars so it doesn't say much if VAN has done better. CAR has won a cup which IMO can give a franchise some buffer seasons to screw up in the next few years. -

I would say Drafting - B+ Development - C+ Trades - C Signings - F Communication - F I would say Ken Holland and Steve Yzermam are A/A+ drafters. Benning is good but he's not on their level Benning strength is Drafting but that's not enough to over come all his short comings. -
Yeah but what else is new. This is why Benning always gets fleeced with trades and UFA signings

[Rumour] Sam Reinhart open to a trade back to West Coast
iinatcc replied to a topic in Trades, Rumours, Signings
My guess is that Buffalo is going to ask for either Höglander or Boeser for Reinhart. I just don't feel it's worth it if it means giving those two, up at least -
Thinking about this I think Vesey is better off playing in Europe. Either in the Swiss League or the DEL. I would actually find the Swiss League enticing for players who struggle in the NHL but can play in the minor leagues.

Well I would argue where was the effort when the games mattered ?

Here's hoping for a bottom 4 spot. I am going to be so upset if Vancouver starts to win every game from this point on

To be fair it has more to do with them than the Canucks. They only have one less win than the Habs. -

Is it time to bring back a pure enforcer to the Canucks line up
iinatcc replied to Arrow 1983's topic in Canucks Talk
A little off topic. With the NHL striking a deal with ESPN does anyone think the NHL will go back to a more physical and more violent hockey ? I was listening to a podcast from Sportsnet and they brought up for casual fans especially in non hockey markets they associate hockey more on fighting than actual skill. Which to me has some validity as someone who lived in Asia most people there associate hockey with The Might Ducks movies, Wayne Gretzky, and Fighting.
