You should really get greens to tell you the story about why he took Tarasenko. It's a good one.
-
Cheers! No, you didn't miss any. The list did. 10 of 50 and 4 of the top 10. That's about right.
-
From reading your posts I've come to assume we're very like minded.
-
I'm just glad you've stopped saying he has slow foot speed and lacks offense. It really doesn't matter who you prefer.
-
You're coming around. Those were your two biggest criticisms a month ago.
-
I'm just going to assume the Isles did extremely well on that list.
-
I agree. His edge work is extremely good. Coupled with his hands he can do very dangerous things in small spaces.
-
Actually he's a pretty good fighter if not prolific. He might be able to step right into the NHL as a depth player. I don't think he should though. He was healthy all year so any concerns about his injury history are mitigated in my mind. He takes too many but he draws more than he makes. Something for him to work on. Re: the Lucic comparisons.... I can tell you that I was very familiar with Lucic in his draft year. I didn't see him as more than a great 3rd liner, so I hold my hands up on that one, and he was a completely different player the following year. I can say that Ritchie is far more talented and developed than Lucic was. Hence why I don't like the comparison.
-
I'm skeptical of your claim. Based off of everything you said in the thread I would compare your statements to Leafs fans, who have seen them play, refer to Kassian as a 4th line goon or Hansen as a soft Euro. I'm not calling you a liar but I think you should watch more if that is the assessment you make.
-
And there is absolutely no reason that could not be the case with Ritchie after another year of junior.
-
It was 3 seasons from his draft year that Lucic turned into a reliable 3rd line forward and 5 until he was a 1st liner.
-
Sure it is. Watch him play.

I would caution against reading too much into online reports. They are almost all outdated, by questionable sources, and often repeat the same assesent that they copy from other media members. Take Corey Pronman, for example. He's never seen a CHL game live and never been out of the States, I believe. And yet he's an authority to trust? I've certainly not been holding my cards to my chest. Throughout this thread I've consistently been putting down the reports that Ritchie is slow or only an ok skater for his size. That, and other inaccuracies, were repeated over and over from people who are reading the reports you talk about but had never seen him play. I've also been trying to quash this misconception that he only gets points because of his size. Both are flat out incorrect. You're welcome to check my post history in this thread. Ritchie is a plus skater. It's a strength not a weakness. He has very good offensive skills that would be true of a 6 foot tall player. He has an NHL quality shot. He is a good passer with good hockey sense. He has a good hockey IQ. He is solid defensively. He is as strong as a bull and not just against younger, smaller players but versus older, bigger players as well. He has no off ice issues. All he lacks is consistency and that's not uncommon or a red flag. If anything, it's natural. He had some extra baby fat he was carrying, due to his growth spurt and injury, but that has faded away as needed and expected. He could stand to get in better shape, just as all prospects need to get stronger to handle the NHL game properly, but that's a minor issue. He is physically strong enough to play a Pro game now. Of course he is going to take time to develop his game. Every player does, even if they step into the NHL immediately, before they reach their peak playing form. That's not an argument against the upside or potential of a prospect. That's ubiquitous. Ritchie will play in the NHL and he'll be a good player for whoever takes him.
-
Absolutely not. All players are unlikely to reach their ceiling, that's their odds. It doesn't always happen that way. You say potato, he's says potato. It's still just potato. Why do you feel that your comparison is more useful than actually watching him play? That's silliness of the highest order. Regardless, TOML, so many of your statements about his skills are wrong because you haven't watched him. We should all show humility and caution when projecting a prospect. Just at least be honest with yourself about what you do and do not know.
-
If it's in the media then it must be taken as sacrament? Strange to hear you say that.

It's not more accurate. It's a bias towards a prognostication. It's impossible to be accurate about events which have not transpired. Countering a poorly informed appraisal with an equally poorly informed appraisal does not make it more accurate. It makes it equally uninformed. If you stopped making counter arguments about his game play without substituting your own guesses, which are patently wrong for anyone who has watched him play at all, then you might be able to form a valid opinion. Instead what you are doing is playing devils advocate. Not so. I watch a lot of junior throughout the year because I have access to the CHL archives and go to every Giants game. I mostly watch WHL and OHL which is why I don't comment on Q players very often. I don't have a bias toward any single player. I watch them all and then make an assessment. I follow the scientific approach whereby I gather information before forming a theory. You're following the zealot approach where you jump to conclusion and then look for a confirmation bias.

One USA today article. Not exactly the authority on junior hockey prospects. Anything else?
-
I don't like making comparisons. Every player is an individual. Regardless of whether Merci is getting worked up on his own prejudices it doesn't reflect the inaccuracies of your posts on an equal level. You're flip sides of the same coin. Any other comparable doesn't make yours more correct because you obviously have the same access to the same information and are salting it with your own bias. There is no difference. Ritchie is an excellent prospect. If you actually had ever watched him play you'd know that. Unfortunately you're equally talking about something you don't know.
-
You've never seen him play. Your assessment is so wrong, and based off of so little information, it's painful to read. Watch him play 20 full games and get back to us.
-
Honestly, Merci, you get yourself worked up into scenarios which have a minimal chance of happening. I like Ritchie as well but you're hyping him in your own mind. You are alone in the wilderness here. Be happy if he can play 12 consistent minutes at 21 years of age. Anything before that would be a bonus.

This is why quality drafting is so important....it takes time to bear fruit. A good measure for how long it will take for most draft picks to play at their NHL level is 6 years or 24 years old. Yes, people. It's a process.

ISS/CS Draft Rankings - 2014 NHL Entry Draft
theminister replied to motzaburger's topic in Canucks Talk
It's a curse. I don't really hope for anyone. I just prefer to let it play out. I think Nylander will be the best player outside of the top 5. I expect the Canucks to pick Ritchie if they keep their pick and I'm pretty good with that. I think he's impossible to pass on and the logical choice, my personal belief aside. Obviously I would take one of the top 5 if they drop. -
Not that it matters but, FWIW, the Isles would be sitting with 143 points right now.
-
Torres was drafted 5th overall in 2000. It was a very weak year. He was still a good top 15 pick for that draft class though. He wasn't a bust.
-
Canucks 2nd rounder 36th overall

Excuse me? Did you have a problem reading what I wrote? Where did I say anything about Schroeder being a bust? When people put words in my mouth it really pisses me off. I said the Canucks have had problems with the development of their prospects in U of Minn before so they might not want to deal with that again. It's the reason they got Schroeder out of there asap. They didn't like the way White was handled and they didn't think being there was the best for Schroeder either.
